How to avoid WSOD......

What is WSOD? It is what we call the white screen of death, basically a number of things can cause this, however the main culprit is adding to much data to your internal device memory (not the MMC). This makes it impossible for the N-Gage to write to the C: drive (device memory) during boot diagnostics. When it can't complete this cycle it reboots. The only known way to cure this is by using a flasher. For most peeps that means a trip to a Nokia Support Centre.

1. Always keep a close eye on the internal memory usage. tools-manager-[options]-memory details-device memory. When it has finished listing, scroll down to see the amount of memory free. Never let that drop below 500K the optimal is 1.5Mb or above.

2. Logs, Contacts, calendar, SMS, MMS and Email all go automatically in to the internal memory. So think carefully about just how much you keep stored.

3. Bluetooth transfer of large files from phone to phone should always be avoided. As this will cause WSOD if the file is greater than the internal memory you have free.

4. When installing SIS files, do so via the onboard manager as you can select to install to the MMC. Some peeps have been using FExplorer. For installation purposes only use FExplorer for java (jar files)

5. Where possible always install apps/games to the MMC not the device memory.

6. If you do not have an MMC, get one as the risk of maxing the internal memory is way too high without one.

7. Bluetooth transfer of large files from PC to phone. Unless you are 100% confident that the files are being sent to the MMC then avoid this at all costs. As an alternative, Card readers are really cheap now and considerably faster than Bluetooth

basically if you keep an eye on Device memory and make sure it never drops too low. You should have many years of trouble free gaming.

white screen of death eh?

thanks for the post!

Yup it's from one of the N-Gage sites out on the Net. I have referred most people to the WSOD reference from that site since a lot of people are affected by it over there.

I have some specific threads I can send to people via PM who need it but please PM me to request the links.

maybe we should create a sticky about it..

Wirelessly posted (N-Gage: NokiaN-Gage/1.0 SymbianOS/6.1 Series60/1.2 Profile/MIDP-1.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0)

Great advice !

The advice is probably the best thing to take to heart with the N-Gage. A number of people in the forums at the other N-Gage site had a lot of problems and the term WSOD was coined since everyone spoke of the white screen with the Nokia logo on it.

..or just install everything to your mmc, not your phone memory

Posted by: bigr5026

or you can use a 3300 to transfer from mmc

Yup, just sucks big time if you BT a file over and then you don't have enough phone memory space to move it to the MMC. Luckily with PC Suite (that is if it works for you), you can tell the phone where the file should go.

thats where the usb cable comes into play...i dont even use my mmc reader anymore

Posted by: TriBand81

Hehe and I thought you'd advocate the card reader to death

Posted by: angel_wing0

used to...but using the usb is like using to mmc reader @_@

blame abhi!

with qd you still have to get bt to have wireless modem features

dont think so...does the "pencil" key master reset trick work?

Posted by: jMark

No a Safe Mode start will not work....WSOD IS CAUSED BY THE DEVICE NOT HAVING ENOUGH SPACE IN MEMORY TO EVEN BOOT

Posted by: angel_wing0

its called safe mode? i thought that is the other way to master reset your phone if u cant turn it on...

Yep i think we know which one, but despite Howard's forums using so much of our techincal support data.

For some reson they still keeping insisting that we are a warez site when peeps link NGH.

NGH has been under new management for a considerable amount of time. Come on guys we are no more of a warez site than you are. We do not promote warez. if we did do you think we would still be up and running almost year later on the same host?

Our obselete java games packs (which have been cleaned of warez/crackers signatures), are about the same category as all the illegally copied wallpapers you have here. As in copyright material that the owners rarely do anything about.

In fact on one occassion we where only to happy to actively remove 3 games from the packs when requested to do so by the software house that owned the copyright on them.

90% of the stuff in those packs is from software houses that no longer exist because they had themselves broken copyright laws by copying or translating older games to the Series 60's format without paying the the actual original copyright owners any money. Hence they are not warez but in fact are fact rather questionable origin abandon ware. Also mixed in a is loads of freeware, shareware etc. btw just because some hacker/cracker puts their signature in an nfo does not actually mean that the file itself is pirated, in many cases it just means that at some point in time the file has been in that persons collection.

Isn't it interesting though, the only way that the admins here could have known about those signatures was if they actually downlaoded and unpacked the old game pack files. Do you guys often go around Downloadiing what you refer as warez.

tsk tsk shame on you.

Maybe you should read the NGH forum Rules before banning such links in future on the basis of wrongfully stating that our site promotes warez.

btw currently the only way to fix the WSOD is by using an MBUS linker cable or a flasher. To reset the internal memory. We have been chasing up nokia for some time to add a genuine boot level reset or bypass to the new firmware since shortly after the orignal release of the N-Gage. Although the N-Gage is not the only phone to suffer from this problem. Nokia however chose to ignore this problem and released the QD with exactly the same bug.

With the QD this problem was increased as its promoted method of data transfer is via Bluetooth, but as many of you are already aware all file transfers, unless expressly overidden on the PC side of things go firectly into the internal memory. Just one MP3 file sent by somebody else over BT is enough to kill the N-Gage.

In much the same way as I noticed it is possible to spam somebody with vcards, also killing their phone. (This vulnerability
however applies to the majority of mobile devices with BT). Thankfully most of them unlike the N-Gage. Do have a boot level reset command/button or key sequence.
