im thinking about buying a NEC e616V, i live in the UK, im going to chile at christmas for 3months, and was wondering if anyone knows the south american band, i know that to use a phone in north america i would need a tri-band, but is it the same in south america?

thanks

i know that parts of south america (brazil for example) use the 900/1800 dual-band network. It just depends which country your planning to use it in. Check this site out http://www.gsmworld.com/roaming/gsminfo/index.shtml for more information about coverage in the country your planning to go to.

hmmm, im going to north chile, would a dual band phone, or quad band, or UK model work?!?

well.. i checked the site i named above out myself for you since you clearly did not see it was there and the whole of Chile is GSM 1900. Also the coverage area in the north is quite bad (i hope your going to a city were there is coverage because otherwise you'd be better of with a satellite phone!)

But to answer your original question, the NEC e616 will not work in Chile since it is dual-band GSM900/1800. You should go for a tri-band GSM900/1800/1900 phone.
