6620 vs. 5600 / Will keep the 6620

I was using a Nokia 6620 Symbian phone for a while and decided to get a Audiovox SMT5600 (which I got new for $150 no contract! ). I was very excited about the MS Smartphone at first but excitement quickly grew to disapointment. Here's why...

1. One of the prgrams I use on the Symbian phone in my business records a call when I get it, if I want to document the call. After I didn't find any programs of this nature for the 5600, I found out from a MS tech that due to the design of their OS, it is not possible for a programmer to write a program of this nature. (Way to go MS!!! ) Symbian programmers offer many options for this.

2. There is no was to disable GPRS without disabling the phone and sometimes it doesn't turn off itself. That'll eat your battery up in about 2 hours! One solution I was offered was to reboot the phone. I don't want to have to worry about rebooting every time I check email or log onto the net! On the Nokia I press and hold the end key and that disconnects GPRS.

3. Bluetooth....I use a headset. To turn BT on or off I have to go through 3 layers of menus! Oh, I can get a program that'll do it in the press of a button, but I have to buy it. It's a free shortcut I can install on my display on the Nokia.

4. Software in general is much more plentiful for Symbian. Whith the intro of MS Smartphones in the US I hope that changes for the better.

5. The Symbiam OS is much more intuitive and user friendly than MS. I compare it to Pocket PC and Palm, although Symbian is probably as versitle or more so than the current MS OS.

6. Camera and video playback and quality...do even get me started. The Nokia is so much better here there's no comparison. Video playback is MUCH more smooth. The video on the 5600 is unuseable.

Don't get me wrong, I like the MS Smartphones alot and when they refine it more, I might be back, but for now I'll stick with my Nokia 6620 and sell my unlocked SMT5600 on ebay.

Just curious... how did you manage to get it for $150. Interested in selling it for that

Good friend...I also spent $38 unlocking it and $60 on a memory card. Probably put it on ebay.

I wasn't overly happy with two of the issues you have either, but just so you know there are in fact free solutions to two of your issues. Both the Bluetooth and the GPRS issues. There are very small, free programs that take care of it. I use both of them and they work great.

Even though you're going to stick with the 6620 if you want to check them out here are the links:

Bluetooth

GPRS Info and you can download the program here

How does the reception compare between the Nokia 6620 and Audiovox 5600? I have heard the 5600 has really good reception but is it anywhere near as good as the Nokia???

To be honest I haven't used the 5600 enough to make an honest comparison. The Nokia has excellent reception but the 5600 appears to be very good also.

Funny, I started with ATTWS with a corporate discount phone for $150 for a 5600 - never tried the 6620.

I don't like Microsoft and I'm not going to sync to Outlook. I had a sense there were many more programs for Symbian. I thought Edge was a good idea. I didn't have a problem with having a larger phone.

I now have the 6620 and I must be doing something wrong - it seems MobiTV wants to turn itself on. The battery dies when it sits on my desk for a few hours or leaves a bright screen like a flashlight. The interaction with BT was much more seamless on my 5600. I'm sure this is just a learning process but I'm having a terrible time with my 6620 right now and it seems to have a dead battery whenever I need to use it.

Still, My 'smartphone' would spontaneously reboot at odd times, took too long to power on and just felt too...microsoft. though some aspects of the GUI were smart like the way it would show phone #s that matched.

After running MobiTV or any other program that you want to force off...Press and hold the prgrams button under the talk button. A list of programs will diplay that are active...highlight the program you want to stop and press the C or cancel button. Some program have an exit option and that will usually do the same thing.

Good thread. I have a nokia 7610. Love the phone, but I just like new things after a while. My T-mobile contract ends in April, I *might* go to at&t-cingular because as of now, AT&T carries the 5600. I just hope they still have it then. I would like to get it via amazon and save some money.

Cingular should pick up the 5600 by then.

Hi. Thanks for your helpful post. I am in the same boat, weighing whether I want to stick with Audiovox 5600 or revert to my Nokia 6620. I do like how the 5600 syncs everything easily, *including* Outlook inbox. The 6620 syncs well too, including Notes, but no inbox, from what I can tell. Is there a way to see my Outlook inbox on my Nokia 6620? In the sync options Inbox is grayed out. Any advice greatly welcome. Thanks, JOE
