Method to set mp3 ringtone in KX2 Koi without format conversion

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

The Koi has the decoder for mp3 but has been disabled in all applications because of request from carriers I think.

But there is a bug in the software that can be exploited to set an mp3 file as ringtone. Here is how -

You need to of course have subscribed to picture messaging service. You need to email an mp3 file to <yournumber>@vzwpix.com. But, before you do that, you need to change your file name to .mid. Suppose your mp3 file is howard.mp3, you need to rename it as howard.mid. You don't need to do any conversion, just rename. Attach this .mid file to your email.

The phone will download the message and after it finishes downloading, it will give an option to view the message. Select view - of course the sound won't play. Now click options and then select "Save Sound". It will give you the name of the file that it saved. Now go to mainmenu->Media Gallery->Sounds->Saved Sounds. You should find the file you saved there. Go to that file. When the file is highlighted, press options and select "Assign" and then select "Ringer". Now the file will be moved to the Ringers folder. Now you can go to the Ringers foler either by going back or from MainMenu->Media Gallery->Sounds->Ringers. Go to the sound file that you just moved. Make this file the default ringer. So the mp3 file which is disguised as midi file is now assigned as ringer. All this while the file will not play.

Now just call your phone. Whew !!!!!

I have tried to do this as soon as I got my KX2 but my phone reboots as soon as you click on open. Exactly what program and settings are you using (bitrate, frequency, etc.) to encode the mp3?

Can you go to the Main Menu->phone info and post the software version.
I might be using a different version and so it works.

SW Version: MD1.0.27.3
Factory Config: MD10273_P01

How does that compair to what you have? Thanks!

I CHANGED TH EXTENTION AND IT STILL READS IT AS A MP3

Is the MP3 created first like you would for the slider?
I can only imagine so...

I tried using the specs listed in the "how to" posts for the slide and it won't work. I sure hope someone figures out a way to use mp3s. I have tried using other encoders but it hasn't work well at all.

Does changing the extension from .mid to .midi help with the Koi?

Does the e-mail "method" work on actual midi files (as opposed to mp3 files masquerading as midi files?)

I may be getting a Koi this weekend so I need quick answers!

Yes a regular midi file works fine, as do those encoded in QCELP and AMR. However QCELP and AMR are not suitable for ringtones. Changing the extension to MIDI makes no difference. The phone has not been out for a full month yet so there is still hope for free MP3 ringtones of some sort (I'll bet with a cable).

the only way songs work for me so far is that i used a qcp file and changed the file extension to filename.mid and then sent it to my phone via yournumber@vzwpix.com

the problem i'm having (to make my own ringtones) is making a wav file in the proper format from an mp3 on my hd...

does anyone know how to encode an 8 khz 16bit mono wav from an mp3 using adobe audition 1.5 or winamp 5 pro? i'm having much trouble trying to make my own ringtones from there

Audacity is freeware...
There's plenty of advice on using it to make an mp3 of the right configuration in the threads for the Slider.
Good luck!
