howard said most of the same stuff somewhere on here or hc.com

Itīs mAH and not Mah! Anyone who have learned physics knows that "milli" is never a capital letter as measurement symbols like Volt, Watt, Hertz are.

M=mega or 10x6.
Or M=Mike.

so we r suppose to do the initial charge for 24 hours??? some pple say that's TOO long...

any comments???

I don't think you need to charge the battery for 24 hours the very first time. Perhaps 16 hrs the maximum would be sufficient. That is what I did to all my phones before. it will surely reset the battery.

Is "charging your phone for 24 hrs and then making sure it is fully discharged before recharging" just a myth? I've always wanted to know..

In cellphones, they have circuitry to stop or trickle charge batteries after they are full, so it is safe to leave it for a year.

Yep. They only charge so far, and they stop.

if you plug a phone into its charger and it stops when its full, why then if you unplugg it and reconnect it, will it continue to charge?

Posted by: RBG

It should only show charging long enough for the charge circuit to decide that the battery is fully charged then stop, circuit does not know it was the fully charged battery and will try to charge. Once it realizes battery voltage meets what charge circuit is designed to charge to, it will read fully charged and disable charge circuit.

as an experiment, we took a brand new motorola v262 and decided to let it charge indefinately. We found that after approx 26 hours, the battery cracked after expanding too much.

If this is true, I assume that the charging then stops when the cell phone indicates that the battery is charged. With every new battery I've hav, this occurs at about 3 to 4 hours.

Then what is the point of charging for 24 hours? Also, stand alone chargers have an indicator light showing when charge is complete. Do they also stop?

Or do the chargers continue charging at a trickle rate?

I don't trust that first link shown. For starters, letting the battery drain completely and then charging it completely for the first two or three times might not be desirable. Looking up lithium ion batteries on both Wikipedia and BatteryUniversity.com says that the batteries should be charged while there is still a partial charge in them. The only agreeable thing the article says is that you should fully charge and discharge the batteries once a month to prevent the unlikely event that there will be "battery memory."

Here's another bit from Wikipedia.org:

Another great advantage is the fact that, unlike other types of rechargeable batteries, the lifespan of a Li-ion battery remains relatively unaffected if they remain "plugged in" after they have been fully charged.

Here's my question: Is it better to charge the phone when it's completely turned off or on? Does it make a difference?

I can say from massive amounts of experience that you can cause a lithium battery to swell by keeping it plugged in and affect memory regardless of what ant website says. I use Cadex analyzers and test in excess of 50 batteries a day and see everything from SOC(state of charge) to high, to having to recondition etc.Lithium are the best yet but they are no match for someone who does not take proper care. Charge until charge complete, never let it die completely and you should be fine. First 3 charges should be until it reads fully charged. You can also exceed battery threshold and phone will not want to power on due to it being over what battery and phone circuits like, it exceeds there circuits threshold and it hesitates to power on and Cadex tester even has a hard time . I always use 2 batteries and treat them like gold because cost is not much different.

Does it make a major difference charging the phone while it is on versus being turned off?

Longer charging time should be the only difference.

However, you should NOT leave your phone on the charge when the battery is full, especially if it's off.
