V3 RAZR people?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: brickyardz

For the people who purchased the Motorola V3 RAZR. How do you like it? I have the Nextel I860 right now, nice phone, but my service sucks. Thanks for the info

Posted by: braindead5400

I played with one. Not worth it in my opinion. Yes it looks nice but I hate the keypad and I don't like the width of the phone. I would much rather save some money and get the v620

Posted by: jules

As someone who actually HAS the phone, I can say it's great. RF is the best of any phone I've ever had (and I've had MANY MANY phones, a V600 included).
The sound quality is also superb...MUCH better than the V600.

It looks beautiful.

Only you can say if it is worth the money to you.

It is a terrific phone.

Posted by: huck-guai

I tend to agree with jules.....I just got the phone and am very impressed with the rf and sound quality. Much better than all the other quad phones I've had

Sure the phone is expensive and will go down eventually but I'm not disappointed in getting the phone now.

Posted by: braindead5400

I didn't mean its a terrible phone overall, I just couldn't deal with the key pad and the width doesn't appeal to me. Everything else is great ( I probably should have mentioned that instead of just listing the things I didn't like), I personally would rather have a v620 though.

Posted by: mshelby

Not that it is a bad phone, I just don't like it.

1. It's too ×××× thin. Anyone with large hands will complain trying to dial a number with one hand.

2. The keypad has no descriptive feel to it. If I were to dial a number I have to look down at the orientation of my finger to dial unlike most newer phones that have some form of bumps on the 5 key to let you know where you are.

3. The thind is insanely wide for a phone hyped by it's size. It's almost as wide as my 6620

Sorry for pointing out negative things on a phone I can't afford one of, instead I picked up 2 tonight for Christmas presents so that should give me double the right to be critical of the phone.

No video recording and lack of edge really have me questioning Motorola on this device. It's a good phone in a $250 range but that's about it.

I will continue using my "fat" 6620 which still IMO is the best phone Cingular carries (price vs. features wise)

Posted by: Exhaloprez

The best phone I have ever owned or used. The RF is incomparable and the screein is outstanding. The phone is a pleasure to both use and carry around. I purchased two of them. One for me and one for my wife.

Posted by: Ferny

I got mine on Tuesday...Best rf of any phone I've had..(FIDO)
I do agree with mshelby about the keypad but if you feel lightly you will notice the 5 is protrude a little. Not enough when you're driving on a bumpy road..

Pros: I love the look and rf. Big screen..
Cons: Keypad, no flash and a little too wide..Too pricey..

Over all I give it 8 on 10

I love my razr....it is the ONLY phone I have ever had that receives a signal inside my house....that says a lot considering I live in the beautiful country where a cell signal is almost unheard of....but I got it with my RAZR! It is very thin, but I like that about it. The most important thing to me is the ability to actually USE the phone rather then just play with it, but that is nice too....

It gets 5 stars in my book.....

Posted by: mikemj23

Absolutely a great phone. Switched from Nextel (and the i860) to Cingular. My Nextel coverage sucked, plus Nextel is just way too behind the times for me in regards to handsets. RAZR is just an awesome phone. I don't see myself getting a new phone for quite some time. The build is awesome and the thinness is uncomparable. Anyone that doesn't have or use it on a daily basis can easily slam it. I wasn't that impressed when I first picked up in store, but after buying it and using it on a daily basis, I would say it's the best phone I've ever used.

This is a fantastic phone! The reception is much improved over my last phone and I love the bright screen and ease of use. I love the overall look, don't mind the keypad, everything just fits. It does get smudgy quickly though, that's why they included that silly little cleaner pillow I guess (took me a few days to figure out what it was hah). The only thing that I hate is the phonebook, it's atrocius, like putting small plastic tires on your brand new Ferrari. Someone said that they figured out how to input multiple numbers for one address entry, is this actually possible?

Is it also possible for them to rewrite the phonebook or is it hard coded into the phone? If they re-work that feature and offer it as a flash (Flex?) It would be the best phone ever.

-in phonebook, press menu key
-'setup'
-view primary contacts.

its one of the best and most elegantly desinged phonebooks there is, once you've discovered its features properly.

ps checkout the mailing list feature (ie 'new', 'mailing list') especially if you regaularly have to send group texts or email

I can't wait for the price to drop a bit so that I can "afford" this phone.

Posted by: mch

It's a good phone.

The RF performance seems to be almost as good as the Nokia 6620 and 6230 on GSM 850. The sound quality is good. It's very pretty.

Well I got big hands and I find the broad width of the phone (which you also didnt like) fits me well and single handed dialling is so easy!

2. The keypad has no descriptive feel to it. If I were to dial a number I have to look down at the orientation of my finger to dial unlike most newer phones that have some form of bumps on the 5 key to let you know where you are.

Dont look to get oriented... Feeeeellll the same "bump" on the "5" key s there...and the soft raised outlining on all keys makes it a breezr to operate the razr eyes shut!

3. The thind is insanely wide for a phone hyped by it's size. It's almost as wide as my 6620

To all the owners.

which one did you get?

Cingular or Original Metal Box?

If Cingular, did you flash/flex (I'm green to those words) it to the original?

What other accessories did you purchase with it? Leather case? Car charger? bluetooth headset? Data cable?

I'm just wondering what's available and what is actually being used by owners.

I want to be prepared when I drop the 1500 on 2 phones. Don't want to get home and realize ×××× I shoulda got a .........(insert necessity here).

Posted by: kernel843

I'm in a similar situation as Splitz.

Does the razr come with a holster carrying case like most other moto's?

Posted by: kingkong1

I got this phone bought for me as a xmas pressy.

I live in the Canary Islands (EU)

This phone is great but...........

Well over priced and has no video record or 3g capability.

How can a company release such a cool phone without these major add ons?

For the record this phone retailed at approx 500 UK pounds but the gift giver got me an unlocked broken phone refurbished costing her 280 pounds UK.

Love the phone but it is useless in the 3g age we are entering.

You got 3G already in the canary islands?!!?? (Cool if so).

No phone is considered a "forever" investment is it - c'mon... seriously. A year or two at most. Right?

In a year or two perhaps then this "3G age we are entering" might actually have useable and widespread coverage in most places and a 3G phone a def asset.

I would think that I wont be holding this Razr in a year time. Perhaps in a year upgrading to the Razr mkII with 3G and a ton of other goodies... or some other phone that looks even better and has whatever features I desire in a phone in a year or so.

Perhaps also then 3G will be "mainstream" also.

Until then the phone for me (phone of the moment) is my beloved Razr.

reality bites

Phone --aside from it's looks-- is really not that great, and Cingular reps don't seem to know much about it.

1. The charging system through the USB sux so bad, it left me high and dry on a business trip. You need to have some charge in the battery for the PC to recognize the phone is attached (ACK!) and you need to have the software with drivers installed in the PC. For this much money, why can't they find a way to accesss basic/inclouded XP drivers?

2. You have to pay for software to sychronize phonebook, calendar, etc. For this much money, that's offensive.

3. The email client built in sux... Doesn't work with so many services...

Sounds like you need a much more data intense phone/pda. The Razr by no means is a data intense phone. Why not get a more data intense device . . . i.e. Treo, Pocket PC Phone Edition, Nokia 9500 etc. etc.?

As a fashion accessory, I think it's unmatched by anything on the market. As a phone, I think it is extremely competent, but not as feature rich as some of the other phones out there... but at half their size, who cares . I personally bought one over Christmas, but lucked out and managed to get an 02 Xda Mini for $600 at about the same time. The Mini is only slightly bigger than the (closed) Razr, and basically blows it out of the water as far as functionality is concerned, so my Razr ended up on e-bay 4 days after I got it.
The other thing that put me off with the Razr was the PC sync software... or the lack therof. I mean, seriously, for what that phone costs, Motorola should include the software . It's almost insulting for them not to.

If you bought the full kit (sexy aluminium box) version of the razr (not the packaging put out by some phone companies) then you do get the MPT sync software at no extra cost.

It sucks. But is given if you bought the full kit packaging.

Mike: i don't think I need PDA, I just need a phone that works... With a charging sytem that doesn't require one to get drivers (had to PAY to get the CD) and install them on each PC I wanted to use as a charger... but why else have a mini-USB connection. Although the Moto wall charger and many otheres have the same outupt, the V3 only works with the Moto charger, not ohter sandard chargers like all the Blackberry units/vhargers ubiquitous in an office setting.

I made do with the Sanyo SCP6000 for years and years as I didn't want to give up the form factor (fits in a pocket). Even that phone on sprint was able to receive most normal email and (SprintPCS) had agreements with many big portals (AOL, hotmail) so one could easily check AOL email... Cingular (my carrier now)should anticipate that many of their customers may need to get AOL email, esp b/c AOL doesn't fwd their email (another rant enitrely :-0 )

That being said... at last somebody is making a thin phone... they should make THIN a prority... I could give up screen size, and even some features cush as the camera to have a phone that fits in a pocket... I'm really liking the Sony/Ericsson phones, except they're a little 'brickish'

I ordered my v3 today cant wait!! Yes its more geared towards fashion then tech, but it has bluetooth and has good resale value. I already have a axim x30 pda so I dont need a pda phone or the need for email access on my celly

Is the full kit even available in the US? One nice thing about the aluminum box version is that its both unlocked and unbranded. Of course, from what I can tell, it's cheaper to buy the branded V3 and cough up the $30 for the CD than it is to get the box

I will find out today when ups comes

Agree totally. I like my phone to be just that... a phone. And prefer in a small sleek form factor... a little style thrown in is nice. Would gladly give up some "fetaures" like camera etc... to get a sleek, stylish phone.

I like my PDA to be small and sleek too. I have a nice high end palm T3 that fits that niche nicely.

Sure am not keen on "brickish" phone units that try to combine phone and PDA features.

I got the V3 as a replacement for my old Siemens, because i wanted a color sreen phone. I got the phone for free from my provider TELCEL in Mexico beginning dec 2004. It came in the metal box with all USB cable, 820 bluetooth headset, car and mains charger, Y-adapter to charge headset and phone simultanesly and the MBT disc with all the tools not the light version.
I have to say that i'm inmpressed with the phone so far, i have used various Siemens, Nokia, Samsung, Ericsson and also Moto's in the past. But the V3 beats them all in terms of sound clarity when in communication as well as on actual volume etc.
The phone has worked flawless so far, i spend the x-mas break visiting my family in Europe in various countries and reception was allways great under all conditions. All features worked great in all countries (sms, internet access etc)

The main display is one of the best i have seen on a mobile, i have never been a game freak but with this phone i play around ones in while with some games i put on it mainly because i wanted to test bluetooth connectivity to PC etc.

The build quality and feel is excellent and it catches quite some attention.

I use it mainly as phone with some use as calender, synchronizing with my outlook at work for meetings etc.

It's not a replacement for a PDA but for me it does the job i need it for.
The quality of the camera is not that great when taking into account the stated VGA resolution. But then i only use the camera for taking pictures for exeample the parking spot on an airport to make sure i find my car back, snapshots of friends, etc. It's not replacuing a decnt digital camera, thats not it's intent anyhow.

It's definetly a cool phone that works very well and since i got if for free it's perfect for me. I would probably not pay 600 to 700 dollars for it, not for a ny phone.

But that also depends on personal choice.

Regards

Well... seems I have a diff experience with the 'cool' V3 -let me share the problems after 6 weeks of use and 4 replacements :
1. System freeze
2. Keyboard light dead
3. Java applications freezing
4. Phone goes dead – camera on screen shows images as u move the phone – but no buttons respond. System has to be reset by removing battery
5. Talk time 45 mins max ( less than a qaurter of stated specs)
6. Standby time 24-36 hours max ( 15% of stated ? )
7. Hinge squeaking
8. Bluetooth headset ‘weak signal’ warning and cutoff within 1-2 mins of usage
9. Speed keys do not work – even though phone book shows it assigned to a key, pressing the key gets a msg the key is empty
10. Phone switches off and restarts frequently

Wonder if this should even be allowed to be on the market with these flaws - or maybe some batches have these and quality control is being compromised.

A cursory scan of the net shows a good number of users with these issues. If you are looking just for a fashion accessory ok... if you want a working unit or value for money or hate being made a fool of, then the Razr is best left in someone else's hand. Cant say crap or rotten... its a prototype being sold as a finished product.

As if this is not enough hassle, Motorola refuses a refund or a solution even thought their engineers/repair center confirm existance of these issues. Way to go Motorola ! ! !

mch,
How is the performance compared to the Nokia 6620 and 6230 on GSM 1900? You only mentioned 850.
