I figure we keep a thread about the s710a, rumors and stuff.

Posted by: Timsta

since today is december 1st.. .. lets hope its out within the next 2 weeks.. i'd hate to not get this phone before xmas.

Posted by: spartacus13b

From what I hear the phone has been pushed back until January on 2005... they have had some problems with it.

Posted by: microchip13

Shalonmonk over on the SE forum has a a cingular branded one and he hasn't had any problems with it.
Also, mobileburn has reviewed the s710a and said it worked fine.

Actually many websites I have read said that's the retail from Cingular..

BTW, does Cingular lock their phones to their Network only? (I am new to Cingular)

Posted by: Timsta

from what i heard is that it should be coming out before 2005 with cingular... so.. lets see if that rings true or not.. or santa's getting more than a few lumps of coal in his stockin.

yes as of Nov. 1 all cingular phones are sim locked

Posted by: microchip13

I've heard that Cingular has exclusive rights for the s710a until 2005. Which is the end of the year, I am sure it will be released before January 1st 2005. However, I am curious, those people who are saying it will come out in '05, why(why is it coming out then) has it encountered any issues?

From what I have heard the phone had some troubles with the network in the last stages of testing and now has been pushed back to January

Posted by: microchip13

Network problems in the last stages of testing? To me that sounds like the people who say "I want out of my contract because two months into it I decided it's not good that it doesn't work at my office."

Come on SE! release a new firmware upgrade! Have all cingular stores with flashers flash and sell the phone!

The new amazon rebate ends on the 15th...

oh really?

so then why is it that my most recent 6620 that I recieved recently as a Lock Line replacement phone also works with an AT&T SIM card?

I suppose that doesnt mean anything either?

These phones that you just recieved were probably produced months ago....

Phones that are shipped from nokia & cingular after november (forgot excat date) will be locked!

If you dont work for cingular and you really dont know the facts then you shouldnt be such a smartas*

Posted by: mdwsta4

i keep checking amazon.com to see when i can finally order (or pre-order) the phone. as soon as it's available, i'm jumping ship from TMO to Cingular.

Posted by: tonydrone

A reputable dealer told me "last week of December for the s710a".

I know this post is pretty pointless, I just thought I'd chime in.

whatever...

so I suppose that my local corp store's manager's 6620 (that he just recieved YESTERDAY) is also SIM locked, right?

again, BS because we tried my AT&T SIM in his as well and guess what?

IT ISNT LOCKED!

oh gee, now lemme guess. his phone is also a phone that was produced months ago, right? whatever...

I think I'll take both my personal experiences and my local store's manager's 6620 phone sixteen times over what you have to say.

Posted by: student725

Various people on the SE forum say that Cingular has them in their deposits!! So its up to them when they release it

actually they are right. All new phones will/are SIM locked. The 6620 and 6230 were some of the last phones NOT to be locked. Nokia did not change them, but moto and the rest of the manufactureres did. We even have new part numbers for them (i.e. v400 has changed its oracle number).

I have not heard if the 6620's will be coming locked in the future, but as of now they are not. All moto, samsung, sony, LG, seiemens, etc WILL be locked

Posted by: Timsta

and it'll be up to us to unlock them all... .muahaha... a band of HOF users... unlockin everything in sight...

day 2 of december... still not released.. s710a.

Thank You! someone on here knows what they are talking about...

are you even paying attention to what I'm bickering about?

I'm NOT debating weither or not newer phones are or arent locked.

I AM debating that the 6620 is NOT locked because every single Cingular branded 6620 that I've ran into has been UNLOCKED. yes, both past and present phones alike.

I just cant stand it when someone bickers with me 'til their blue in the face about something that I know isnt the truth especially when I've seen the proof with my own two eyes.

(oh, and this has nothing to do with a store manager because we all know that 80% of the time most Cingular store reps have no clue about what they're talking about when it comes to newer phones and their features. of course CingularWRX is one of those exceptions because I've met him in person and he DOES know what he's talking about and if you've read what he said, he did admit that he knew nothing of the 6620 being locked because it simply ISNT.)

Posted by: RazorWriter

As an AT&T customer, I just got a huge brochure in the mail all about cingular and the merger... in it they have a page with the S710a saying "coming soon"...

Checked amazon and it's $269 after rebate tho not yet stocked there.

Posted by: student725

back to the topic of the thread....
From Phonescoop....
Cingular: Sony Ericsson S710a
(Cingular swears the S710a will be available this month, however in the event it is not, the Nokia 7610, a megapixel smartphone, is available for Cingular through Nokia USA and should be in Cingular stores as well.)

So.... it should come out ... but somehow in that line of text i sence it wont be here before xmas

Posted by: microchip13

Just called a store, pretty sure I got the manager, she said that she wasn't sure exactly when it would be released, but she knew that a new shipment of phones were coming in the last week of december, which unfortunatly, points to January 1st, however, also note that the last week is not too far behind from december, for a while the phone may be web only, I do have a strong feeling that it will be released on the 15th but possibly in short supply with the full load of the phones being shipped to stores about 2 weeks later, which I think seems about average for stores to get new phones in their hands(Note I think, not sure how it usually works)

orders usually go out at the same time, it just takes longer for certain stores to receive them. I know the store a few miles away usually gets stuff WAY after we do (as in a few days)

Thanks DaleJr, not ALL reps are dumb

Posted by: microchip13

thanks for clarifying that, well, then we're looking at a release date sometime before christmas, the store that I mentioned in my post was a very small store, so afterwards I called one of the more major stores(it's always packed) and got this

"Sometime before christmas."

I'm happy. As mentioned before, cingular will not miss out on exclusive rights or the holday rush. It will be out before the 25th of december.

I can't see why sally-sue at customer service would have any idea how many were going out when

CS reps have absolutely no information as to the actual release dates on phones.

I guess we will see who is right when the phone comes out at the end of the month , after the holiday season ...

I will bet my paycheck that my sources are better than yours. A decision on release date is pending MANY things that need to be fixed

sigh.. we have a guy with 5000 posts... and a guy with 3 posts... sigh... why bother having a argument over who's right or wrong.. lets just all hope it releases soon. and besides.. its not like you guys are gonna treat the rest of us to a round of beer if ur right.. lolz

so what would make you think that a CS rep would know ANYTHING about ANYTHING much less give out an accurate estimate on when an upcoming phone is going to be released...

sheez, when are people going to realize that CS reps are probably two steps lower on the "knowledge pole" than a regular Joe-Shmoe corp store rep (which isnt saying too much...)

Hey guys, I'm a newbie here so bear with me...

Okay, I was told from a friend of mine that the new s710a is gonna cost an arm and a leg to unlock from Cingular's network! Is this true?? If not, could someone please explain to me how I would go about unlocking the phone. If anything, just post a link and I'll read up on it.

Thanks in advance....

Ok IHAP... it seems like you know a lot about this phone...
What problems is it having? Reception? Cingular Personalizations ( )??
And when do YOU expect the phone to be released....

I think a lot of people would apreciate your contribution....

Posted by: SE Aholic

The phone currently is expected to get Technical Approval no earlier then the 17th of December and at the absolute earliest be available for distribution from the DC on the 24th of December. That is all if everything gets resolved in a timely and satisfactory matter for approval. Remeber the Z500a just got approved and that was suppose to be out the beginning of November originally. I would imagine it wont be out now tell after the 1st of the year.

That Nokia has been on amazon Cingular for a couple weeks now.

Also on topic, A Cingular dealer told me Cingular has a few phones that have been delayed when I asked about the s710a.

People this is going to be another MPx220 tread... I am telling you Cingular will do anything to push this phone out before x-mass but the phone will not be aveliable until January of 2005.. We can start the same thing people did with the Mpx220 arguing and the phone is still not out... even store community book that we got does not show the phone for december so we will have to wait... I want that phone also but my ××× is going to have to wait...

thats sucky news but thanks for the update

Posted by: student725

any updates?

Posted by: microchip13

Possibly, the phone may be unofficially approved, I found the FCC id for the s700i(and possibly the 10a) looked it up, while the phones that were in the pictures were probably the s700, there was an interesting statement in one of the RF documents.
And "S700" without the 900Mhz Band, but with the inclusion of EDGE and the 850Mhz band. It said that the test results were n/a at the current time, however it IS included, this leads me to believe that it may be partially approved or something, under the s700 name but with 850, edge and the lack of 900. it may be able to make it's Dec. 15th deadline after all.

Posted by: prateeko

I just read through Mobileburn.com's review and I find it interesting that he commented on how the phone itself is slow. He obviously has a Cingular version (check his pictures) and his review applies to both phones leading me to believe the phone is indeed slow. Maybe Cingular is re-working the firmware so as to avoid another MPX220 release, recall, reflash, etc?

Posted by: hatoncat

It shouldn't matter how slow the menus are at release, the S710a will work with Online Update, so you can just drop the phone into a DSS-20 or DSS-25 and update it automatically.

I'm sure Cingular wants it to be as bug free as possible at release, but when push comes to shove... Cingular will push the Online Update option rather than hold up its release past the point of exclusivity.

dont be too sure about that. take a look at the 7610 for example.

Cingular has waited sooooo long to make this phone available that its "bling bling, newness" factor has long been expired.

for God's sakes, just take a look at how many phones have came out since the original 7610 came out back in what? May or June? freakin' six months later and Cingular finally decides to make their 7610 available to their customers?

thats just ridiculous...

Online Update? Could you fill me in on what that is and how it will work? It seems unfair to charge users for data usage for something that should be right in the first place (if you mean what I think you mean)....

Posted by: echau

in houston, the SE rep has been going around cingular stores to show them the s710a...it appears done, so i'm guessing...i mean...i'm hoping that they'll release it soon.

cingular does have a bad habit of releasing phones though...the 7610...the v3...

i hope it comes out before the end of the month...otherwise...it better be worth the wait...

No, you plug your phone into a PC and download the firmware update to the phone yourself.

https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/...Y7AF031021'

Posted by: .7

...man I would really like to know what the issues are with this phones release. I'm sure they've tested it for more than 400 hours by now. Also, say they find a problem with the software or what not, do they have to ship all the phones back to SE for fixes, or are they flashed on site (assuming it's just a software issue)? Ive seen it mentioned that Cingular actually has the phones, if this is the case, why would Cingular have phones that have not passed their final approval? IF Cingular dosent have them, AND they haven't received Cingular's approval yet (which I'm sure no one can really concrete confirm or deny) then wouldn't that be highly unlikely that we will see the phone this year?

Alot of questions, more just thinking out-loud

also, we are in DESPERATE need of a mole in the distribution center and the testing department that can keep us informed with non-proprietary info of course

Posted by: spartacus13b

My last info has stated that the phone is ready for launch now that it has FCC aproval. The phone should be launched within the next 2 weeks.

IHAP said that its was supposed to pass testing on the 17th, but he thought that it was going to be delayed again.

Now personal speculation:
If its not approved on the 17th it means their still is some software prob (it wouldnt surprise me if it has do do with one of Cingulars additions...) so SE would have to come up with a fix. With Xmas so close i would say they wont have a fix till the beginning of January. Hopefully it will be approved then.
Maybe in stores at the very end of January?

Man, i wanted this phone for xmas!!!

Two things:

the mpx220 was an absolute piece of crap from day one until it was released

they are not "pushing" anything out so as to avoid problems.

I laugh at some of you, it's the same with every single phone that is long awaited. ××××××××××××××× about the delays and then when push comes to shove, 95% of the complaintants never had any intention of buying said phone. Instead they start the complaint threads about "this doesn't work" or "the European model does that and the Cingular version doesn't"

blah blah blah. I could probably sell one of my unlocked Cingular S710s for huge bucks around here

This, coming from someone with 5124 posts since January of 2002 (averaging over 146 posts per month), seems a little like the pot calling the kettle black. While I agree there are bigger problems to be worried about, it hardly seems appropriate for someone who spends so much time here to be chastising others for doing the same.

Is Cingular ever going to release firmware updates for download? I keep reading in the SE forum about people getting the newest firmware with the s710's being released right now, while the rest of us, like me, are left with the previous firmware that is complete with laggy menu speeds and slow performance. And yeah, I thought about going to third parties for flashing, but I'd rather go to Cingular or SE without risking the loss of certain voice codecs.
