Good news for Cingular BlackBerries -- TCP/IP works -- Verichat works now!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Successful report.
Finally, Cingular joins AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, Nextel in TCP/IP.

VeriChat MSN / AIM / ICQ chatting works on Cingular now! On a BlackBerryOS 3.8 and later device (model 7290, or an older model that's been upgraded to OS4), go to Options->TCP and enter the following info:

APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Once you do this, Verichat will work on the BlackBerry. If this still does not work, call Cingular and insist that "wap.cingular" be added as an Internet Accsess Point name in addition to the existing "blackberry.net" Internet Access Point name. (You may need to escalate to Level 2 in order for this to be done). I do recommend you have an unlimited data plan, before you consider doing this.

If you need Verichat MSN / AIM / ICQ, it is here:
Verichat 2-week trial

This part is untested, but BlackBerry Modem probably will also work on a 7290, provided you enter the APN username/passwords in the "Connect" dialog when you launch Start Menu -> Network Connections.

For instructions on setting up BlackBerry Modem, see
HOWTO: Using a BlackBerry as Modem for Laptop
(Works only on 7290, 7100 and 7520)

I would think you would have a difficult time convencing them to add wap.cingular to your blackberry account.

How successfull have you been? They have no real reason or justification to do this.

While I would really like this feature, I can't seem them adding it to my account....

Give it a test now with these settings. It may already be provisioned for all BlackBerries with unlimited plans now, but you have to add the username and password rather than leave it blank.

If not, there's now supposed to be an easy way to get it provisioned:
Quote:
I think having the "wireless internet express" added as a "seperate" line item to your Cingular ORANGE account, automatically provisions the APN access needed.

Cingular allows tethering on regular cellphones, and should also work on BlackBerry provided the account is setup properly. Don't tell them about modems, BlackBerry and laptops -- just tell them to get the APN added as a separate lineitem.

After you save the username and password in the APN settings, make sure you reboot your BlackBerry before running Verichat.

The successful user didn't add any services to Cingular, but I am confirming that VeriChat CAN be done on Cingular BlackBerry 7290 now. It's just a little more tricky to set up.

Three successful Verichat users
One successful Idokorro MobileSSH users.
From this BlackBerryForums.com thread

The trick is to call Cingular and make sure that your Cingular bill has "Wireless Internet Express" options added to your BlackBerry service as separate line items in addition to your existing BlackBerry service:

/WIX EXTENDED INTERNET
WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE

This will automatically provision the "wap.cingular" Access Point Name, for making your Internet software working -- no port blocking!

Many users are starting to notice this option already on their bills, so it might be working for you without needing you to call Cingular. But if you tried Verichat and it doesn't work, you will have to call in to get this fixed. It may mean being on hold for Cingular for a while.

AT&T charges me for extra data even though I'm on the unlimited plan when I do this. Is Cingular the same way or do they give unlimited TCP/IP as well as WAP?

Posted by: dozment

I have not been able to make this work as described on my account, but I didn't get something going last Inight. I'm a little worried that I may be charged for usage. Here are the details:

This is how my account is set up:
WIX EXTENDED INTERNET $0.00
WIX DATA CONNECT $0.00
WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE $0.00
XM WITH BB AND V UN $44.99

Blackberry TCP settings:
APN: isp.cingular
Username: ISPDA@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Same username and password on the dial up session, and I'm dialing *99#.

Extra Initialization String on the modem:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR"

I assume I'm using Wireless Internet Express, so it may be the pay-per-use thing. It looks like a fairly high data rate.

dozment: did you try using the wap.cingular APN and password?

APN: wap.cingular
Username: WAP@CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1

Mark: You can add me to the list of people that were able to get verichat working, I had to delete my service books with my mds provider and cingular and resend the cingular ones and it finally worked!

Yes, I tried the wap settings. Verichat works fine, but modem connectivity does not. It only seems to work with the isp settings that I mentioned.

You were able to use your BlackBerry as a modem for laptop on Cingular, using your own settings?

Yes, it works using the isp.cingular settings. By the way, I found the settings in this document from Cingular's Developer Network: http://alliance.cingularinteractive...areSettings.pdf. It lists the connect information for all of their offerings.

EXCELLENT! Thanks for the information, I am updating the BlackBerryForums.com FAQ. Does Verichat work too as well?

I have also copied your instructions to BlackBerryForums:

Yes, Verichat works. So does MidpSSH. If I get billed for $300 worth of pay-per-use WIX on this month's bill I will post that as well.

Hi there - I have read everyone's comments re: the 7290 and Vericaht with Cingular/7290. I set all of the APN settings as mentioned, and get a "cannot open tunnel" error. Thoughts?

Ben

Posted by: dozment

Sounds like you don't have Wireless Internet Express on your account.

Posted by: ishcoco

According to what I've read, I need to add this? I already have the unlimited BB access. Is Cingular going to catch on to what we are up to and bill us even more? Any idea?

Ben

Here is my suggested script:

"I took my SIM out of my blackberry and put it in my nokia 6010 but it won't get on the internet, can I get "Wireless Internet Express" added to my account so that I can my other phone on the account"

Instead of "Wireless Internet Express" you may like to say "MEdia Works"

Posted by: dozment

Kilo, I'm not sure if you're asking about modem connectivity at the bottom of your last message or if that is a quote from another message. But, I have been able to make the 7290 work as a modem on Cingular. Once caveat, I'm a little worried that I might be using Internet Express in pay-per-use mode. I won't be convinced otherwise until I get my bill in January. Here are the details from earlier in this thread. I apologize for being repetitive.

This is how my account is set up:
WIX EXTENDED INTERNET $0.00
WIX DATA CONNECT $0.00
WRLSS INTRNT XPRS PAY PER USE $0.00
XM WITH BB AND V UN $44.99

Password: CINGULAR1

Same username and password on the dial up session, and I'm dialing *99#.

Extra Initialization String on the modem:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","ISP.CINGULAR"
