I wanna develop apps for Smartphone.. how?

I'd like to know where to start. I've got VB.net/VB and C# skills. C++ not so much, so I'd like to avoid that. Any suggestions? Recommend freeware methods if possible...and then commercial solutions.

Thanks!

Microsoft offers a free IDE for C++ (I know - not your preference). They also have the older version of eVB (3.0?). The newest eVB and .net requires MS Visual Studio, which, obviously, will cost ya. I'll check on the links.

Embedded Visual Basic 3.0
Embedded Visual C++ 4.0

I think the eVB is for Smartphone 2002.. but I'm sure it's not too big a deal, those apps should work fine on the Smartphone 2003. I'd rather go this route than spend hundreds of $$ for VS.NET.

Thanks!

You will have to add the eVB runtime to any WM2003 device you want the software to run on. You can download it from several places on the web.

Hmm.. so, eVB is only for Smartphone 2002. I wonder if I get eVC++ (which supports Smartphone 2003), will eVC++ have a visual layout designer like VB??

Posted by: MDesigner

Eh.. oookay. I load up eVB and I try to start a new project and it says there are no CE SDKs. But I installed the Smartphone 2002 SDK. Hmm...

Did you try the Smartphone 2003 SDK?

Posted by: onlydarksets

Although, it does look like only the Smartphone 2002 SDK is supported by eVB 3.0.

OK, couldn't get eVB working. I tried eVC++ 4 .0 (Smartphone 2003).. but man, there's no visual designer.. just straight C++ code from scratch. no thanks!

Sybase makes a product called Pocket Builder that I think does what you are looking for. Version 2.0 supports Smartphones.

you must first prepare the programming environment for Visual Studio 2003.NET and Smartphone 2003. I personally tried it on Mio 8390 and it worked, but it took a lot of time and hassle.

install the following programs in this order:

Microsoft ActiveSync 3.7.1
VS 2003.NET pre-install programs
Visual Studio .NET 2003
MSDN Library for Visual Studio .NET 2003
Pocket PC 2003 SDK
Smartphone 2003 SDK
Emulators for Pocket PC 2003 Second CHT Edition
Emulators for Smartphone 2003 Second CHT Edition
Developer Resources for Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
WindowsMobilePowerToys
EmuASConfig

--------------------------------------------------------
MS IIS (For ASP.NET)
MS SQL Server (For ASP.NET)
--------------------------------------------------------
IDAPro(For Disassemble SmartPhone)
SoftICE Driver Suite
--------------------------------------------------------

And later you must ensure all programs run smoothly without any conflicts. If there is any conflicts, find out where they are and make modifications.

This certainly isn't authoritative, but check out the apps at this site. The SP2003 versions say they were developed using eVB 3.0. That suggests that eVB does work for SmartPhones.

I stand corrected (again). I installed the SP2003 SDK, and the readme states:
eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0

The Smartphone 2003 SDK is not compatible with eMbedded Visual Tools 3.0.
eMbedded Visual Basic

The Smartphone 2003 SDK does not support development using eMbedded Visual Basic.

That sucks.

OK, final flip-flop - it works!!! You need to hack it to get it working in eVB 3.0. Either follow the instructions at Omnisoft.com or download the hack at Ruttensoft.com.
