Can the Audiovox 5600 be bought unlocked or does one have to buy it ATT setup and unlock it?

Funny... I was at a AT&Tingular store today looking at the Nokia 6230... I then noticed the Audiovox 5600... I was reading wap.howardforums.com and this was the first mesage I saw
I'm trying to figure out if I should pick the 6230 or go with AT&T service with the 5600, or just buy the 5600 outright and get a cingular plan. AFAIK right now, you would need to get it unlocked to use on Cingular's network. Saw some sites online that do it for 40 bucks or so. I really like this phone.

You can probably find it on EBay unlocked (meaning someone bought it and unlocked it before selling - buyer beware), or you can just buy it anywhere and unlock it yourself. I bought mine on Amazon, and unlocked it at http://www.imei-check.co.uk

I'm trying to decide to just get the phone and stay on AT&T or do I buy it for full price, unlock and get on Cingular. I think I may be better off on AT&T with their supposed $25 unlimited internet access for smartphones vs. Cingular. I don't see a real advantage to buy it at full price right now, pay to unlock it, then sign up for Cingular. I'm half thinking that if Cingular does eventually end up carrying this phone, I can probably move my plan to Cingular and get it reflashed with all of the Cingular specifics without paying any opt out penilities from AT&T, since they are the same company.

FWIW, Cingular has a $19.99 data plan called MEdia WOrks (or something like that). It includes unlimited unrestricted Internet access, 1000 SMS messages, and some MMS messages.
AT&T's $25 data plan is only for mMode, so from what I've read, you can't use it to access non-mMode links.
I'd be inclined to get it thru AT&T at a discount price. If there are rebates involved, keep AT&T until they're all done, then pay to have it unlocked and switch your account to Cingular.
There's a post on here that said AT&T subscribers can switch to Cingular at any time for $18 (which I guess is the cost of the new 64K SIM that they'd give you).
Anyways, it's a very awesome phone, so do what you need to do.

I have the $24.99 data plan for the 5600 and can access any site or port. You're not limited to mMode. You are, however, limited to the U.S. - there is a charge per KB for international data roaming.
I think they intended this plan to work well for e-mail and wireless Internet users who don't intend to use their data service as a laptop modem. At any rate, MEdia Net is probably a better deal, which is why I am thinking of unlocking and switching...
