Virgin Mobile 8910! Backgrounds & Ringones

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Alright, Ringtones & Backgrounds ARE possible for the Virgin Mobile 8910 A.K.A. V7 Flasher.

just a little side note, I know the Audiovox 8910 is supposed to be the next model of the 8900, but actually it's an upgrade from the 8610. There are some minor downsides when compared to the 8610, (i.e. random beeping when recharging, no lock feature, etc.) *sighs* oh well! It's still the better phone!

The 8910 uses the same data cable as with the V5 Slider & the 8610 (and any other phones that use the cable): Cable #19 from Radioshack/Kyocera cable, which can be found via internet (i.e. Ebay, etc.) or other places. The phone also works with bitpim, and uses the profilic drivers (LG VX4400) which both can be found somwhere within this forum. And most importantly, ALWAYS REMEMBER TO BACK UP YOUR PHONE BEFOREHAND!

I just recently bought the VM-8910 but was dissapointed when I found out no one had found out how to put ringtones on it, luckilly when I did a search through google, I stumbled across this website: http://www.cellphonehacks.com/viewtopic.php?p=94854 and checked it out. Then while I was browsing through the ringtone directory, i noticed that the folders were in intervals of 8 (i.e. 8, 16, 24, 32, etc.) now, i'm not exactly sure how much of a significance this has, but I wasn't too keen on the idea of replacing the original files, so I ended up adding new directories & ringtone files that continued counting up from 8. I decided to try & tinker w/ the rms.db file in the MYRINGTONES directory, but unfortunately couldn't figure out how to add onto the list, but I was able to tell the file where to find the ringtones in the new directories I added. Now this file is similar to the default_snd.txt file on the Audiovox 8610, where a letter indicates the beginning of a new name on the list, but instead of there being a letter, there's a symbol, which is what threw me off. HOPEFULLY someone out there can look into this and figure it out, but for now we have to stick w/ the instructions from the indicated website.

The specifications for Backgrounds are (w)128x(h)134. the MYGRAPHICS directory is a similar setup to the MYRINGTONES directory, folders using intervals of 8 (50, 58, 66, etc.) containing a single .bmp image in each one, and an rms.db & rms.__ file. The ringtone instructions DO NOT work with the rms.db file in the MYGRAPHICS directory! I tried editing the file in a similar fashion and ended up frying my phone, making me exchange it for a new one. Luckily I didn't make the same mistake w/ the new one and just overwrote one of the unwanted .bmp files on the phone. Now I have nice ringtones & bacgrounds on my phone!

Hope this info helps anyone!

Happy Christmahanukwanzakah to you!

Ahahaha, i'm a total newb till i get my cable, but the background is 128x132! It seriously is, and if you don't believe me, send 2 ur phone a 128x131, 128x132, and a 128x133 (maby a 134 also), Might be different 4 different phones, but hey! w/e works 4 u!

Did you leave the bmp name the same as the one on the phone and just put a new bmp on the phone.

Hey, don't knock something Till you try it. If you check the background files ON the VM8910, it will say that the images are 128x134. How did you come to the conclusion they were otherwise? I suppose anywhere between 128x131-128x134 COULD work on the phone, but really, don't criticize someone unless you test it for yourself.

Yes, i had named the .bmp image the same as the original file and just overwrote it.

I just got my data cable today for the Flasher and i'm hoping for a fairly simple way to get ringtones on it(i guess I could do some hex editing). Have you figured out a way to ADD (not replace) ringtones on there. From that tutorial did you successfully get ringtones on there?

O no...no...no...I tried the thing with replacing the Jingle Tone...MY PHONE IS FRIED!!....please say someone knows how to fix this...it just restarts, shows the start-up logo...and restarts..

Posted by: thepindoctor

Yep it is fried.. Return it get a new one, which is what i did, except i tried to replace a picture and messed with the rms file and fried it. But with the new one, i just replaced(over write) the file jingle file which is 8.pmd and put a old phone ringtone on it and it rings louder than the other ringtones that are on the phone. Also i downloaded about 4 others from vm's web site and i over written those as well with the same ringtones i had on my computer and those were louder than the ones i downloaded from vm. I was also messing around with audiovox qpst and i got into the phone with my spc code and i was able to upload a picture to a directory and then the phone went into service mode, so i deleted the file and had qpst restart my phone. But i was trying to put a jpg file into the mms/ov folder thinking the phone might see it and i wanted to restart the phone after that but i didnt want to.

ehh...well, i'm not going to mess with the phone again, lol...at least not w/ the data cable. I still have the reciept and the return policy is still good...so i'm going to exchange it...

Mine was bought at Target, and I've no clue what their return policy is for stuff like this, so I'm a bit cautious when I read posts like that.

Has anyone else had success?

Posted by: awdark

Target should give you at least 30 days... mess with it ^_^
I will see and consider when my wire comes...

Well, that's a ringing endorsement.

I'm ordering a cable tonight, so at the very least I can pull pix off it, but I want a few other Virgin guinea pigs to try the riskier stuff first.

So for ringtones, I heard using psmplay or something to convert a file to psm and replacing it on the MYRINGTONES directory, without fiddling with the rms.db file works. Can someone direct me to a psmplay download, i found one i think, but it's not in english, so it's basically useless.

Sorry to double post, but I just wanted to say I got it working, and by the way, its 128x134 .

Posted by: awdark

Care to explain your process so when I get my cable I can have another post as reference?

Posted by: Blitz Fist

Here's what I did.

1) download and extract the prolific drivers
2) in the prolific folder, right clock the .inf file, and slect install
3) plug in the phone to the cable and plug it in to the computer
4) when the add new hardware screen comes up, select to choose folder to search for drivers, and use the folder where the inf you clicked is located
5) after it successfuly installs, reboot immmediatly (most problems come from not doing this)
6) run bitpim, and under settings, select the lg vx4400 as the phone model, and auto for com port
7) under view, select 'view filesystem'
8) click the filesystem tab, and click on the + sign.
9) phone contents should show up

So you were able to just replace the file from your phone? Were you able to convert a midi or something as a normal file and just overwrite say the virginmobile ring?
