Enable "Select Network" on Cingular 6230b (sort of)

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mobilet68i

There was another thread posted which illustrated how to force your phone to select a network given that Cingular blocks this feature in the SIM.

Basically either using Bluetooth or IR you go into Windows Hyperterminal and send the following command to your phone:

AT+COPS=1,2,"31038" (31038 being the ATTWS side of the Cingular network where 31026 is the T-Mo side)

In any case, I did this last night and I confirmed that it was on ATTWS...came to work this morning and was sitting eating breakfast at my desk. Glanced at my Blackberry (Cingular too) and it had 5 bars as normal. Glanced at my Nokia 6230 on the desk next to it and it had NO BARS!! No operator name...nothing. Bizzarre.

I power cycled the phone and a few seconds after poweron I was surprised to see:

"SELECT NETWORK" I hit OK and it went to "Searching". Came back with two networks (both were called Cingular) but I knew the first one was ATTWS. Selected it...said "REQUESTING" and then "Network selected"!!

I don't know if this is a good thing because given that the menu option is still disabled...if you go out of coverage, there doesn't seem to be a way to force a network select apart from powercycling the phone.

I'll try it out during the day, I loose the signal in my office's elevators so I'll see if it sticks with ATTWS.

So for those of you with a Nokia 6230 on Cingular who want to use the Cingular Blue network...here's your way.

These commands work also on any other phone, for example my S56 and T637.

Yes they will work on most GSM phones fine too. The point here is that the Cingular branded Nokia 6230b specifically has the ability to network search DISABLED by the carrier so this somehow seems to re-enable it.

Posted by: hojbjerg

If you want to view available networks then issue at+cops=?

For instance this what my T637 reports back

at+cops=?
+COPS: (2,"Cingular Wireless","Cingular","31041")
+COPS: (1,"AT&T Wireless","AT&T","31038")

Afaik, network search/selection is SIM controlled feature and hence most Cingular phones using Cingular SIM have it disabled thru normal menu system. So my point was that you can use these commands on most Cingular phones (not specifially 6230b).

hth.

Posted by: hojbjerg

A couple of additional commands:

at+cops=?
+COPS: (2,"Cingular Wireless","Cingular","31041")
+COPS: (1,"AT&T Wireless","AT&T","31038")

OK
at+csq
+CSQ: 11,99

OK
at+cops?
+COPS: 0,0,"Cingular Wireless"

cops=?: list networks
CSQ: signal strength
cops?: current network

Search for:

"at+cops" at command

in google and one of the links is to a Nokia AT command reference set PDF.

I think if you change it to mode 4 then will be in manual/automatic (if manual fails then do automatic selection):

In your case:

AT+COPS=4,2,"31038"

and I don't think you need to power cycle.

Here's the command set:

http://ncsp.forum.nokia.com/downloa...id=209;ref=devx

I'll probably switch to mode 4 tonight. Although that will basically just put me back to normal. By using mode 2 (manual) the phone will not register on another network. Gotta try some of the other ones. Interesting stuff...

As far as I understand it will only go to automatic if the manual network selection fails if you select mode 4. I.e. in your case it should select AT&T when an AT&T signal is available and only revert to automatic when there is no AT&T signal.

Interesting indeed...I'll try it tonight.

Funny thing is it's on mode 2 right now and I've been trying to get it to loose the damm signal to see what happens..problem is ATTWS 850 penetrates the building so well it hasn't lost the signal yet! I even took the elevator up to the 45th floor and it held a signal the whole time in the elevator...Verizon doesn't work in the elevators even from 1st to 8th floors..

ATTWS rocks in NYC

If I had more time I would write a small Windows application which would allow you to do following in a user friendly way:

- View availbale networks (AT+COPS=?)
- Select a network (AT+COPS=...)
- Set network selection: manual, automatic or manual/auto
- View current signal quality in dB (AT+CSQ with conversion)
- View current battery level (AT+CBC)
...

Yeah...should be straightforward...you'd have to open a connection to the appropriate serial port. I haven't done any Windows/MFC coding in years but it would be easy to do if you have the time which like you, I currently don't have.

But the phones software can apparently override the SIM if that is the case, because I edited the software on my v551 and now I can select networks, even with the normal Cingular SIM.

The novelty in this thread is that this can be done on any GSM phone not just Motorola's. SEEM edit can only be done on Motorola's

You need to open an serial terminal emulation program in osx and then open the serial port which the phone BT connection is connected to. Don't ask how to open terminal program, but that is what Hyperterm is in Windows.

Edit:

I think you should be able to use iTerm:

Right, so obviously the SIM is not the end all of the network selection thing...or SEEM edits or other mods would be worthless

For some reason

AT+COPS=4,2,"31038" does NOT work on my Nokia 6230b. I keep getting error. I can set it back to Mode 0 (auto) or Mode 1 (manual) but not Mode 4 (manual/auto).

Maybe this is locked down by Cingular?

Is there a listing (FCC,etc) of what the 310xx network numbers are?

Argh! There hasn't been a thread on HoFo that got me this excited since June when I found out the 6230b was out!

I connect to my 6230 in HyperTerminal, but when I type nothing appears. I type the command in anyways, hit enter. Nothing.

Am I doing something wrong?

Also I can't open that PDF file.. I don't know why...

Are you sure you are selecting right COM port assigned to IR/BT terminal?

In my Belkin Advanced Configuration I see:

Local Services (Service that this computer will provide to other BT devices): COM8

Client Applications (How this computer will access services on other BT devices): COM7

In HyperTerminal I tried COM8, nothing.

I use COM7 in HyperTerminal and it appears to connect and I see on my 6230 under Active BT Connections my computer is listed. So I'm assuming it's connected fine.

edit: i fooled with some of the settings in the properties and now text appears as i type in hyperterminal. the only problem is, as soon as i type "A" the bluetooth disconnects on my phone!

Issue following command:

at+cops=?

It will list all current networks that your phone sees - including the 310xx numbers. It takes 5-10 sec. for it to complete.

My SE T637 supported mode 4 with a Cingular SIM. It is therefore more likely that it is the 6230b which does not support it. Isn't there one of the COPS commands which will list the supported modes?

Posted by: mobilet68i

Wheeee...this is fun.

I just registered on T-Mo's network...then back on ATTWS then T-Mo...compared signal strength

Yeah I think when you do an ATT+COPS=? command the last few things are the supported modes

on mine I see ....(0,1),(2)

Posted by: wierdo

Mode 4 is not supported on NMP products, read the docs. Only the Nokia GSM Connectivity Terminal and a few other Nokia devices support other than modes 1 and 2.

I've found that the best way to use these commands on a Nokia is to issue the AT+COPS=1,2,"mccmnc" and then issue AT+COPS=0,2. The phones I've tried this on over the past six months (which are all Nokia..I haven't tried it on the t616 I have access to, because it will allow you to select a network when you lose signal anyway) all remain on the selected network until it loses the signal and then switches to whatever the automatic selection chooses.

Since this thread seems to be becoming "the" thread on this subject (finally, we have one!), I'll point out, yet again, that the functions in the SIM which ask the phone to disable the network selection require the phone's firmware to have support. Most phone firmwares these days have support for CSP and CPHS. I'd assume that SEEM editing your Motorola castrates the firmware in such a way as to make the SIM think that the firmware doesn't have CSP.

If you have an older phone, it's not too hard to find firmwares that don't support CSP. Network selection will work fine if you have one of those handsets.

toolhead: If you have IR available, give it a try, it's much more reliable! If not, in the WIDCOMM drivers anyway, the serial port you want is the one associated with the "serial port profile," not the modem profile or any other profiles. I don't know how other stacks operate.

Edited to add: mobilet68i is correct about the end of AT+COPS=? output showing what modes are supported by your device. This is true in almost all AT commands you'll use on a mobile device. =? is the AT shorthand for "what can I do here," which just plain ? at the end is "what is this set to now."

The Nokia documentation is very clear, although they do have a couple of "short" guides that don't go into detail and so aren't as useful.

yeah i'm assuming it's a BT bug with my firmware. anytime i hit "A" or anything at all, it says "error with bluetooth connection" on the phone or something like that, and the BT is disconnected.

i have the MA-620 IR adapter I used to use a lot, but for some reason couldnt get the driver working when i upgraded to XP. i'll try it again. argh.

AHH!!! I got it working over IR!!

now is there anything useful to do? hmm

AT+COPS=1,2,"31038"

Posted by: wierdo

You can send and receive SMS, check signal quality, check your battery level, dial the phone, activate speakerphone, read/write the phonebook, change GPRS settings, dial any modem in the world at 9600bps if you have CSD. And about a million other things.

You can also turn on extended error reporting (AT+SEER, I think, definitely AT+xEER), so you can see why exactly it is that you can't roam on that network.

Sadly, the AT+CSQ output on Nokias is next to useless, since it will still display a good signal strength when the network it's on has completely disappeared! That happened to me the other day when I was trying to figure out why my GPRS connection went away. Turned out I had traveled into an area without Cingular service, but AT+CSQ wasn't kind enough to tell me. AT+COPS? told me "0" though.

Posted by: hojbjerg

Your phone currently is only seeing the Cingular network. Try again and sometimes more networks start showing up.

toolhead, you've got one of chippery9's unbranded 6230b's, correct? I ask because on my roommate's unbranded 6230b with net monitor, it won't switch to another network. When extended error reporting is on, I think the error is something like "unspecified error," rather than one that indicates an inability to register on the target network or anything like that.

It does, however, show the other networks as being there just fine. Perhaps when you're in an area where you can pick up AT&T you can try this sometime..at least if you have some way of issuing commands to your phone when you're away from home.

lol. in my room, cingular is the only gsm signal. at the window, at&t faintly comes in. for tmobile, you need to walk to the next block to get even the faintest signal.

if I could get it to work over BT i could leave the phone at the window. but i guess the BT in my firmware is more screwed up than the cingular version. IR is the only way i get it working, which means it has to be right next to my comp.

but it's cool that we can finally check networks available. with my desktop it's useless, but i may be getting a laptop soon, if i'm moving to school in ny. we'll see.

I'm such a dork. I just remembered I have a 10 ft. USB extension cable. lol. I plugged the IR adapter into that, and have the IR next to the phone at the window, where I can pick up at&t as well.

First I got:
+COPS: (2,"Cingular",,"31041"),,(0,1),(2)

I moved the phone about a centimeter, and then I got:
+COPS: (2,"Cingular",,"31041"),(1,"Cingular",,"31038"),,(0,1),(2)

I see they're both listed as "cingular" just as they appear as my alpha tag, while for some of you other guys it appears to be listed with different alpha tags.

It shows whatever is on the SIM card on the Nokias. If you've gotten the OTA, 31038 is Cingular. My roommate, who hasn't gotten the OTA update has 31038 show up as "Cingular Extend".

Can someone explain please, what the 2 stands for? The one that's always there. And also what's happening when I use the 0, 1, or 2 for the first # in the command line?

Your SIM card may not be allowing you to register on ATTWS or maybe the signal is too faint?

Try this:

AT+COPS=0,0

AT+COPS=1,2,"31038"

Posted by: wierdo

The "2" is the selector for the display mode for the network list. NMP products only support the format "2". Other manufacturers, of course, do as they please.

I doubt it. My phone switched back and forth to at&t at the window, sometimes. The cingular signal is much stronger, but for some reason occasionally it's on at&t. I've made calls with it on at&t too, and it works as long as I stay by the window.

Anyways, I put the 10ft extension cable away, and am ready to hit the hay. Maybe some other time.

Thanks guys for all the help, this was cool figuring out.

So for those of you with a Nokia 6230 on Cingular who want to use the Cingular Blue network...here's your way.

Awesome! Thanks!

Yeah I think when you do an ATT+COPS=? command the last few things are the supported modes

on mine I see ....(0,1),(2)

I can get my T616 to register on ATT but TMo doesn't appear in the available operator list. Does TMo have a roaming agreement with Cing. where you are? Or can this method override that?

edit: I forced it to register on ATT but after a power cycle it reverted back to Cingular so for the T616 it's not a permanent change.

If TMo is not on the available operator list... hehe... it's not available. A.K.A. No Service. Get used to not seeing TMobile available. I'd have to drag my computer to the next block to pick up the faintest of TMo's signal.

Is there anyone who can verify that the AT+COPS network selection works on the Cingular branded 6230? If so, what firmware version is the working phone? (*#0000# will display it)

Posted by: j1194

It works sort of with the v600 except i can only get it to show the current network .

Appears to work on my Cingular-branded 6230, 112004 manufacturer date.

Hrm, I was thinking that was the one with the useless IR port, but looking on Phonescoop, I see that it is "Data-Capable," although it doesn't have bluetooth or IR. It's possible that if you purchase a data cable for the phone you could hook it up to your computer and use it as a modem. It may or may not, however, support the AT+COPS command.

Posted by: ldrgroup

thats what i was thinking.....i may get a cable and try it out.

anyone do this on 6620?

I am having the same problem as other subscribers. I tried using both IR and BT with the exact same results.

Hi all,
this thread is awesome. unfortunately, the bluetooth adapter i just got isn't working on my pc quite yet...however i do have a tungsten t3 which im tethering to my motorola v551. i know that i can edit the initialization string that the palm sends to the phone.

can i somehow use that to send the "look for at&t" command? or is there a program for palm os that will let me do what these pc/mac programs can do?

Posted by: xantiv

Great tips, thanks everyone!
So far I've been able to choose which network I'm on using hyperterminal and my bluetooth adaptor. I've noticed that I can only access the internet through CSD while I'm on the t-mobile towers (I have the DATA ACCESS CSD plan for $3.99). Whenever I try the ATTWS towers it says NO CARRIER when I try to dial out. Anyone else notice this?

Posted by: skytrack

After fiddling with it for about 15min i got it to work on my Cingular 6230b.

Here's what i did...
AT+COPS=?
which showed: +COPS: (2,"Cingular",,"31017"),(1,"Cingular",,"31038")

Then i ran AT+COPS=1,2,"31038"
And got: ERROR

At this point my phone had no signal and appeared to have no network. So i again ran...
AT+COPS=?
which showed: +COPS: (2,"Cingular",,"31017"),(1,"Cingular",,"31038")

I then ran AT+COPS=1,2,"31038"
and finally got OK!

So basically do this. Run the initial scan and try to register the phone on AT&T, let the phone error out the first time. Then when the phone shows no signal, scan for networks again and then try to force AT&T as #1 and it works perfectly. I even restarted the phone and it's still staying on AT&T. Works great!

Thanks for the info.

I'd like to chime in and say that this procedure does work on my new 6230b that I got on the 23rd.

No, I have been trying to, everytime I try to put it on the 31038 i get error, it loses signal and then goes right back to cingular, if i chose 31017 it says ok, but every single time i select 31038 I get error, lose signal for a few sec, anyone know a way around this?

It does not, however, work on the replacement that I got today.

Code:

Too bad it's not like my AT&T branded 6200 where it just works.

Does anyone know if the GC83 can do network selection properly?

Posted by: Razor1973

Unfortunately, this didn't work for me either.

Posted by: harlenm

I finally got this to work, but I have a few questions.
This is what I show.

AT+COPS=?
+COPS: (2,"Cingular",,"31041"),(1,"Cingular",,"31038"),
(1,"Cingular",,"31026"),,(0,1),(2)

What does the 2 and the 1's before "cingular" mean?

If I do
at+cops=1,2, "31026"

what does the 1 and 2 mean?

Also, if I do at+cops=0,2,"31026, after about 10 seconds it goes from tmobile to orange, is that normal?

If I leave it as 1,2,"31026", when I go to an area that has a weak tmobile signal, but a strong orange signal, will the phone switch, or stay on tmobile? I just want the phone to switch to whatever carrier is the strongest.

Same thing with the V180 and V3. I think Motorola didn't implement this feature fully. Would love for someone to prove me wrong though.

I've been playing around with this on my S56 for a while, and I've found that if I use mode 4 to manually select the blue network my phone will revert back to orange just a few minutes later even though it "should" only do this if it loses the blue signal. However, in mode 2 it will stay locked on blue. Is there any way to make it prefer blue but fall back to orange if it loses the signal?

Posted by: PhoneBoy666

I was getting mixed results using this method of changing the preferred carrier, so I finally relented and called Tech Support, which seems to be a lot easier to get to on the weekend. (Yes, you can get to them on Sunday

Within a few minutes, the nice gentlemen I spoke with had me power off my phone, completely reactivated my SIM, then he did an OTA and reprogrammed my SIM to prefer Blue towers. Powered up, powered back down after I got the "Power off/Power On" message, and voila, my phone appears to be preferring Blue on its own.

I'm having trouble understanding how to send these AT commands to my phone. I am a Windows user who has a V600. I have a USB data cable, as well as bluetooth. What's the easiest way to send these commands?

Posted by: Patrick G.

And has anyone got this to work on a Moto Vxxx?

Posted by: mblphnlvr

I got it to work on the t637. It isn't that hard. You have to set up the serial bluetooth connection and then connect the hyperterminal to the serial port that your phone is on. You can then just send the commands over to the phone.

When I use the commands on the t637 they don't stay if I try to put the sim back on my 6620.

How do I connect the 6620 since it doesn't offer the serial profile for bluetooth? I have a data cable also if it helps.

Thanks!

Posted by: buckspaul

Hi sorry for the basic questions. i have never used the hyperterminal before.

1. how do i create the command to send to phone.
2. how do i set up the transfer settings on hyperterminal to send to my nokia 6620 via IR?

3. how do i install the command to the phone?

any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

thanks much.

Posted by: mblphnlvr

This is what I have done on my 6620, but it won't connect to ATT.

Go to hyperterminal and create a new connection. You have to set the phone as the modem. I think you can use any phone number, but I just put "at" in the phone number box. When you try to connect, it won't. Press cancel and start typing in the commands. It should say that it is now connected in the lower left corner. You now just type in the commands and press enter.

I would like to know if it will work on your phone because I can't get it to work on mine. I have an AT&T branded version.

Hmm, this is odd. I was playing around with this in Hyperterminal (I finally got it working) and had it locked onto Blue for a while. Then something (I don't know what) happened and now I can't choose anything other than Orange (31038) even though I can see Blue (31041) and Tmobile (31026)

What gives? I've tried AT+COPS=2,2,"31038" as well as AT+COPS=4,2,"31038" and neither works. The latter doesn't say anything in Hyperterminal, but causes the phone to lose a connection. The former says "ERROR" on the PC and nothing on the phone.

Any help would be appreciated.

My phone did the same thing! Try this:

at+cops=?
(list of networks)

at+cops=1,2,"31038" (att)

When it gives you the error message, it should loose service on your phone. Once that happens, keep sending the Att command until your phone prompts you to select a network (usually after a couple of tries).
Now before you select the network on your phone, u must run the search command again (at+cops=?) this time you should not see ATT.
Now that you have done that, you can now select the network on your phone and when it searches, it should see ATT and let you attach.

Let me know how it works!

Nokia phone products don't support mode 4, which is manual, then automatic when the selected network is lost. Mode 1 is manual selection. After sending "AT+COPS=1,2,"31038" and waiting for the reply, type "AT+COPS?" to see which network you are registered on.

You could also send your phone a custom operator logo, which would allow you to differentiate between using the home network and other networks. On my 6230, I use an invisible operator logo, so I only see "Cingular" when I'm on another network.

Plus, sending AT+COPS=1,2,"31038" only give me an error!

Until integration occurs in your area, you'll have to manually select the network with the best signal. If you follow the link in my last post, it outlines the steps you need to take to re-enable the network selection menu on your 6230. If you don't have newsgroup access, you'll have to wait until I figure out how to get Gammu to do what NkProfile3 was doing, or find someone who has NkProfile3 and get it from them.

If you can connect via Bluetooth, IR, or cable to your phone, it's a very easy process, although you do have to be able to install software on your computer.

Posted by: doogster

ok - so explain this like I'm 2 yrs old (which, mentally, I'm not that far from) --- I load the NkProfile3 trial version (that I already downloaded but didn't install yet) and, with my bluetooth connection from my XP computer to my phone (which I know works because I can communicate with the phone using Hyperterminal) I just do that one checkbox and I'll be able to select my network manually?

NkProfile3 is not the MobiMB (or Mobius/PX) demo that you have to install. It's a seperate program that uses the connection manager installed by MobiMB, but otherwise, you're essentially correct.

Posted by: doogster

yeah - you are right... the file I downloaded but haven't installed yet is Mobimb... I install that and do the checkbox thing and I'll have the ability to select my network? Will it be a selection in the menu somewhere?

You'll have to find Nkprofile3. Since Mike (the author of LogoManager) has stopped distributing it, you'll have to either get it off the newsgroups or find it somewhere else. Once you install MobiMB, you'll need to configure your connection settings to tell it how you want to connect to the phone (bluetooth, ir, cable). Once that's working, you run NkProfile.

Posted by: doogster

So... that is the catch... I don't have that other profile thing... so it looks like I'm beat... unless someone on this site can provide me it or a link.....

Posted by: doogster

OK... I found that profile file on a German site... and I had to register to get the file and it was all in German... kinda sucked - but, I have it!

Now... what exactly do I do?

Virus scan it, and configure it so you can see your phone in MobiMB. Once that's done, run the program and uncheck the "Use CSP" box.

Posted by: doogster

So, I run MobiMB and THEN the profile software?

You need to run MobiMB to configure the connection between your computer and your phone. Once that's done, all you'll need to run is the nkprofile app.

Posted by: doogster

OK... did that... I went to the settings tab and unchecked the CSP box... now what? Do I have to save it or something? How do I know it worked?

Posted by: doogster

Never mind... I rebotted and now I have a network selection on my menu under phone settings... but they are both Cingular???

It's probably T-Mobile, and Cingular probably doesn't allow roaming on T-Mobile in the area you're in. If you go back into hyperterminal and do an "AT+COPS=?" you'll be able to see the numerical designation of the networks.

I haven't yet figured out a way to keep the Cingular SIM from forcing all networks to read Cingular.

Good to hear you have network selection, though...

Posted by: doogster

When I type AT+COPS=? I get

Yeah, I'm pretty sure (and someone will certainly correct me if I'm wrong) that 310-26 is T-Mobile. Apparently, there aren't seperate Blue and Orange networks where you're located, or perhaps the Blue network is so weak in that area it isn't seen by your phone in your present location.

Posted by: doogster

So, that's it? I went through this whole thing and I can't log on to the T Mo tower? I mean, it was a cool experiment and all.... but my service still sux at my house!

Sadly, Cingular doesn't allow T-Mobile roaming in all markets. Take comfort in the fact that when you're traveling elsewhere, there may be instances in which the network selection will allow you to select a better network. I'd suggest taking a look at compass.t-mobile.com, or perhaps trying out a T-M prepaid SIM to see if T-M might better suit your needs, if switching is possible.

If not, depending on which band Cingular uses in your area, there may be relatively affordable repeater solutions available that could improve your signal strength in your house, if you have a reasonable signal outdoors.

It would probably be best to take any further discussion on that topic to another thread, since it's getting pretty off topic for this one..
