digital roaming problem

i have the sanyo rl 5400 and always keep the roaming on "sprint" so i don't go into roaming. lately it has been switching out of "sprint" and going to "automatic" and the roaming icon will appear.
i've never experienced this on any of the sprint phones i've used over the past 7 years.
has anyone else had this problem?
