T200 locking up

My Fido SE T200 recently developed a problem where it locks up when you turn it on. It gets as far as the Fido logo screen and then locks up until I remove the battery.
It still has the original R1A043 firmware. Would updating the firmware solve this problem? The phone was working fine for two years and only developed this problem recently. I've heard that the newer firmware will improve the rf performance, but does it address any other problems like the one I have.
Also, how long does it take to update the firmware at the Fido store? Can they do while I wait, or do I have to come back later to pick it up? Thanks.
