Hi there,

I recently bought a data cable for my partner's 3595 phone. I believe I have everything installed correctly, but I can't get either MobiMB or OPMII to connect to the phone.

There was no "setup.exe" on the cd I received with the cable, so I plugged in the cable and pointed the new hardware wizard to the cd to find the .inf files. Things seemed to install correctly...I get the cheery connection sound when I plug the cable in, and "USB data cable" shows up both under the USB devices and under the Ports sections of the winxp device manager. I DO see that there is an unknown "USB Transceiver" device which I don't know if is related to this issue or now.

Anyways, I was able to change the data cable onto com4, as is seemed to be needed according to some posts that I've read, but I still can find a connection to the phone. The cable is plugged properly into the back of the phone as far as I can tell... the battery is all angley and the 4 pins from the cable hit the exposed connectors. (Q: there are 6 connectors on the phone, should my cable have 6 pins?) The phone is on, but there is still no connection.

I read in the help files of OPMII that maybe some firmware versions of the 3595 block out the use of the data cable. Does anyone know which versions are blocked? And how do I find what version this phone is running?

Sorry for the long post...I am normally good at this sort of thing, but I can't figure this one out.

You must have a data cable with the bump in the middle (USB to serial converter) to allow USB connectivity to the phone. Probably much more compatible is a straight serial cable (minus the bump, plus a 9-pin serial connector) as it's much more compatible as the 3595 (and the 3590) do *not* support USB natively.

As for the cable itself, make sure you remove the foam rubber square from around the data pins. If you are using a 3595, you *may* have to dissassemble the head and take the spring clip assembly out - it's only used for the 3590/3510 and interferes with the 3595. Once you have the COM port mapped, you should be able to connect with the phone using Oxygen. I know I've done it, but I used the straight serial cable - and it was an older version of Oxygen too. In fact before I got my new flashing gear, I was able to upgrade the firmware with a cheap 'china' DCT-4 flasher using the 3510 head.

If you have no luck, go with the straight serial cable - I've used it with at least 3 versions of firmware (albeit all Rogers) and had no problems. I've never heard of the 3595 phone having it's serial data interface disabled, but you may want to play with the baud rate in the USB driver itself if you still have problems.
