Windows auto-detects DKU-5 as TUSB3410 Boot Device!

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: moproinc

Hello All!!! This is my first post!

I recently got a DKU-5 cable for my recently acquired Nokia 3220. The cable is NOT an official Nokia product. I run Windows XP pro. I've tried this on two very different computers as well. I've tried the following procedures.

1) Install the PL-2303 drivers from CD provided and then connect the DKU-5 Cable w/out phone.
(Auto-detects as TUSB3410) and WITH phone (auto-detects as unknown device)

2) Install the PL-2303 drivers from different source online (twice with two different sources) and got the same results as the first one.

3) Install drivers AND PC Suite, and then the cable with and without phone. Got them same results.

I rebooted each time after installation and uninstalling the drivers.

I did some research on the TUSB3410 and it's suppose to be a chip devised by Texas Instruments that reads serial-to-USB rather than USB-to-serial.

It seems that before windows detects the PL-2303 drivers, it finds the TUSB3410. I've attempted to locate the drivers for TUSB3410 and deleting them, but i have no idea where they are.

Has anyone else had a problem similar to this and a way around it? I've already collected some gif's for screensavers and backgrounds for my nokia... ! guess i counted my chickens before they hatched...

Please help!

I thought the DKU-5 was a straight through USB cable, while the DKU-2 had the USB-to-serial converter module.

You may need to look for DKU-2 drivers.

Hi, I have had the same problem and I've fixed in this way:

1. Install the DKU-5 drivers, without plug the cable
2. Install the Nokia pC suite software, again without plug the cable.
3. Now, the most important, you must install the drivers for TUSB3410. This driver creates a virtual COM port based on a USB connection.
You can find the driver at:
http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folde...t/tusb3410.html
there's a lot of information on that page, but you can find the ling at the bottom, with the label:
"TI Virtual COM Port Windows Drivers and Firmware"

4. Once the TUSB3410 driver is installed, now you can plug the USB cable on you usb port, without be connected to the phone.
You 'll see a message informing that windows found a TYSB3410 device and couldn't find the driver. Select the option to locate the driver yourself, selecting the folder where the driver was installed (commonly, c:\Program Files\Texas Instruments\USB-Serial Adapter).
This message will appear twice, once for the new device and the other for the new port.

5. Finaly, you can plag the phone to the cable.

6. Open the Nokia connection manager, select Serial Cabe DKU-5, click on setup, and select the new "USB - Serial Port (COMx)"
Notice that you should do this step every time you unplug the cable. This is because the port is removed when the cable is unplugged.

If you hace any problem, please email me and I'll be glad to help you.

Best Regards,

Pablo.

Hello Pablo!

Your information sounds very promising.

I now have a new problem. The auto-installation file setup to install my DKU-5 drivers is not working. It says something about the Install shield not being able to locate iKernel.exe.

I'm able to access the individual drivers but I've no idea where the actual drivers go. These are the following drivers given:

ser2pl.sys
ser9pl.sys
serspl.inf
serspl.vxd
serwpl.inf

I'm hoping after this problem, everything runs smoothly!

Thanks again! Oh and MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Posted by: pdm400

Hi, you are closer than before! Fixing this hole you should go smoothly!
Well, I'm not sure if it can work individually selecting the drivers.
You can find ikernel.exe on:
C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Engine\6\Intel 32
if you can't find that folder, you can try searching manually.
When the installation program asks for ikernel.exe, select the folder where is located.
Let me know if you don't have this file, and I'll try to find out what it is and how to install it.
Marry Xmas!!!

WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
!!!

After 3 weeks, I've finally got it running!!!
So much fiddling and sorting and installing and rebooting... such a simple fix!!!
Guess in the end... if you don't want any troubles, get the REAL thing...
If you've only got $15 and some time to spare... (ie: ME!) fake DKU-5's work just fine!!!

Much appreciation Pablo!!!

hey there , everytime i connect my dku-5 cable, in the hardware profiles, it comes up with prolific usb-serial..., instead of the tusb3410, how do i overcome this?? I got a 7250i and a dku-5 cable which is not original?

running on windows me
fone=nokia 7250i
cable=dku=5(not genuine)

From my understanding the TUSB3410 is an isolated case. You have the more common (and easier) situation.

You should simply be able to install your Prolific USB-Serial (PL2303?) DKU-5 Drivers followed by your phone Software. After that, it's a matter of plugging in your cable and phone. If that doesn't work, there are other posts in the Nokia forum that would cater better to your needs.

Side note. My fake cable has a few drawbacks. After a few transfers in one session (one session being roughly 15 mins of file transfers) the connection fails and I have to restart the computer if i want to use it again. It happens to be just enough time to upload pics and movies. Also, for some odd reason, windows will not restart or shutdown unless the cable is unplugged. But at $15... I'm still able to communicate with my nokia an infinite number of times albeit being a lengthy and laborous process.

Installed the prolific drivers,(pl2303)
i have heard if i plug it in with the fone it will come up as unknown device(had that) what do i do if that comes?

and if i plug in without cable it comes up the same, but the tusb3410 doesnt come...

...

if i get a offical nokia dku-5 cable, would it come up the same when i connect it, and would it take this long to get it working? this is really tiring afta a few tries, i am on windows me, which ti driver shud i use?

The tusb3410 drivers are also available here:

Thanks to this thread i got the cable working.

In PC Suite, do you select DKU-5 (USB) or Serial Port connection? You need to choose the serial port type.

Posted by: brandon_r87

i selcect the serial cable one. i go to configure and choose "USB Serial Port - Com4" out of the drop-down menu and click ok. Then I get two messages. The first says "Cannot access the requestion connection type." and the next says "Cannot configure the connection type. Please reinstall Nokia PC Suite. (Code: MediaConfigPlg Run)"

Posted by: brandon_r87

after waiting and receiving no response, i checked further into it. i went to device manager and noticed something i hadn't before. there was a item called USB - Serial Port that had a question mark on it. the reason for it was that the device "Cannot start" (Code 10). its running on a Texas Instruments driver, version 1.2.10.96. i think that might be from the ti virtual com driver.

Posted by: manboobs

Anyone able to get the modem function to work using a fake cable? My cable works fine with the tusb3410 drivers except i cannot install the modem driver on the correct com port (com 4) only comes up on the list with COM 1

You have the dright idea but the cables are backwards.

The DKU-5 and CA-42(?) are serial cables that're coverted

The DKU-2 is a true USB cable

I tried all the steps that pdm400 reported. No problems until I plugged in the phone and then clicked on "Get connected" button. It just kept waiting there
forever and never connected to the phone.

I am also using a non-Nokia DKU-5 cable and had to install the TI com drivers.
I use WinXP and it had installed 2 devices after I downloaded the TI drivers.
Then I did select the DKU-5 and configured it as USB-Serial-Com4.

Any ideas why?
Thanks!
Gaurav

This is killing me.

I'm running XP SP2 and have tried for days to get my non genuine DKU-5 cable even recognised and configured correctly.

I've installed the driver from prolific and rebooted - fine.

Installed Noxia PC suite - fine

Connect cable to USB (without the phone being connected) and it initially recognises fine and attempts to configure fine but then gives me an error saying that installation could not be completed.

I check in device manager and it shows a new com port (in this case #3) with the yellow exclamation mark. I can change it to be #4 through to #100 but it still doesn't work.

Needless to say connecting the phone does nothing (although the phone reconises that it has a cable connected.

any help?
