Audiovox SMT 5600 on T-Mobile????

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: Stephen Porter

I am looking to buy an unlocked Audiovox SMT 5600 for use on a T-Mobile system. AT&T's merger with Cingular has left this phone unsupported at Cingular and I've had just awful experiences dealing with them anyway.

I'm exploring the possibility of getting an unlocked Audiox SMT 5600 and have some questions.

T-Mobile says that they have had some problems with "unlocked" AT%T "m-Mode" phones. The phones work, but they won't access the Internet on T-Mobile's network. So, is there any way to ensure that I get a phone that will be unlocked to work both as a phone and as a web browser/e-mail client?

I've seen the i-Mate SP3 phones on e-Bay also and they appear to be identical to the Audiovox--is this true?

Any experiences or helpful pointers in getting this accomplished are welcomed and appreciated.

TIA.

You won't have a problem with the C500 (C500 / Audiovox SMT5600 / SP3 / SP3i / SDA / SDA Music and QTek 8010) I've been using mine for over a month on T-Mobile.

The only problem is replying to a text message from another carrier, but this doesn't just happen with the 5600.

Check out MoDaCo for more info about the phone.

I was deciding between the T-Mobile SDA and the SP3i. I know they are almost exactly the same but I think the SDA is all covered in T-Mobile stuff. The SP3i has all Microsoft flavored stuff. I was wondering if people knew the differences between the phones.

Thanks! That's encouraging. I have a line on a local SMT 5600 that is still locked. My next question is how to go about getting it unlocked?? I've called many T-Mobile and Cingular stores here and they all say they can't or won't do it. Are the online unlocking sources reliable?

I'm not too familiar with all this and I'd hate to drop $300 on a phone that I then couldn't get to work!!

Again, TIA for all the help.

Florin from MoDaCo is the only one I know of that can unlock the 5600. The cost is aboout $38.00 to have your phone unlocked.

What is displayed on the phone is only for reference. Dial 611 from your phone (with T-Mo SIM) and if you get T-Mobiles support everything is fine.

More info.

I have tried all possible combinations to connect my unlocked SMT5600 to TMobile Internet or TZones. Does anyone have suggestions?

Voice works great, but IE browser will not find any pages.

Posted by: Stephen Porter

This is what I am afraid of happening, since the T-Mobile rep warned me about it. jleecong seems to have figured it out for his phone. Have you tried all the GPRS settings he describes?

Let me know--this is important as I'm ready to buy the phone assuming it will work!

TIA.

Its a great phone, and if we get this figured out, it will be incredible. It is worth the buy anyway, if you unlock it, you can sell it on ebay for approximately break-even, so you do not have much risk if you act quickly.

I have tried all GPRS connection combinations from the forums and TMobile online support. The only thing I have not tried, is adding TMobile Internet to my account. That will be my last option if I cannot get a WAP/GPRS connection.

I wonder what the magic is? Or if it has something to do with the phone being originally locked by AT&T? This is what the T-Mobile rep was trying to tell me.

jleecong...if you are reading this thread...was the original source of your phone AT&T, before it was UNLOCKED? I'm wondering if AT&T had some special mMode lock that prohibits other carriers. If that is the case then I should look for one of the i-Mate or other versions of the phone???

TIA.

I could not make the WAP connections work, so I added TMobile Internet to my account and removed the TZones. The net cost per month is about $15 pretax for unlimited internet usage. It is working like a charm now.

Awesome Phone!!

had the phone for almost a week now and still can't connect to t-zones. mms and email are working fine. will you please post the gprs settings you use?

Posted by: jleecong

My phone was from Amazon.com with a AT&T contract. It still has the mMode icon hidden away and I removed all other traces of AT&T.

These are the settings I'm using to connect to t-zones with the 4.99 plan.

Another user also had luck using the T-Mobile site configurator send setting to the phone by selecting MPx220.

Hi,

I'm new to this and I was wondering how you create the great-looking screen shots of various phone settings??

TIA for any pointers.

Stephen Porter

P.S.

I'm still working with my Audiovox SMT 5600. I turned off full-Internet access since the web browsing was so slow and pretty useless. I did have T-Zones working, but somehow set it up to notify me of every email that came into my inbox. Big surprise on my first bill when they charged .05 for each "notification." They are crediting me for that. Now I want to get the $4.99 T-Zones and try to set it up so that I can get my POP3 mail forwarded to T-Zones. My spam filter--Mail Frontier desktop has a feature where it will forward emails to a cell phone AFTER it has done its filtering job.

The typing difficulties on this phone make it pretty impractical for sending anything but the most rudimentary email, but I'm still very happy with it overall. I'm using a Bluetooth headset and have also started using it as an MP3 player. Those features, along with the Outlook synch capabilities, are enough to keep me happy.

I use ScreenShotSP trial version.

I tried SmartSS (freeware) by Lou Terrailloune, but didn't have any luck with it however there is now SmartSS+.

For email I don't use T-Zones, I use GMail. No cost and it will check for new messages every 15 minutes or so. Any other pop accounts I have can go threw the spam filter and then be forwarded to my GMail account.

For lots of great info check out AT&Ts 5600 Web Tutorial. (For phone number just use 5555555555)

FYI...If you have a smartphone be it SMT5600 or MPX220 and are using the phone with Tmobile $4.99 Tzones option, you will not be able to use AIM (via Agile) or MSN Messenger unless you upgrade to a higher data plan. I have received several explanations for this. According to Tmobile tech support, there are network settings hard coded into the MSN Messenger application EXE specific to Cingular (in case of MPX220) that will not be changed even if you properly setup Tzones on the smartphone. Motorola tech support confirmed this. The only option right now for AIM is via Tzones links, but this is down at the moment. Agile Messenger does not work on Tzones because Tmobile tech support said the necessary access ports are blocked on the Tmobile network. You gotta upgrade to the $20 plan if you want to use AIM from the phone embedded applications.

Modaco is actually trying to get their own data service, something like 100MB/$10 a month, but only in the UK.

I wonder how the mobile carriers are going to deal with this... I certainly doubt they'll like it.

I realize this was posted a long time ago, but I just want to say that it is not true. I am using an SMT5600 on T-Mobile with the 4.99 unlimited T-Zones and Agile Messenger works just fine.
