Why do you need a camera phone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: macintoshcx

Everytime a new phone is reviewed the first question it seem that everyone ask is how good is the camera, why? It seem to me, the first question that should be asked is how good is the RF. What's the point of having a 1MP camera phone and you are dropping calls right and left. I don't have a camera phone right now but how good the camera is, is going to last on my list when I upgrade.

I could give a rats azz if a phone as a camera or video recording. Give me good RF, bluetooth and address book and I will be a happy man

My phone has great RF and a great camera.

Oh, I thought you were asking WHY do you need a camera phone, as in the actual need for the function. Like some people just want a camera phone or have the newest high-tech phone just to be "cool" and its really stupid to have your phone as a status symbol if you aren't going to use it for what its supposed to be designed to do.

Posted by: NuG050

I think a lot of people are wanting a camera phone because, let's face it...quite a few people have cell phones AND digital cameras and if they could combine the two, that would be one less thing to carry...at least for me, like you, I can care less if it has a camera...but since most, if not all, phones these days are all camera-phones, I got one...after getting one, though, I can assure you that the novelty is worth its price alone...all the pics I've taken are just for fun and if I want it to be permanent, I'd use my digital camera...

Posted by: ASimpleFarmer

Well my phone is a camera with a phone attachment

I love my cam phone. I mean I take some nice pics of everything...plus the RF rocks, great BT implementation, yaddy yadda.

But I totally know what you mean macintoshcx

Posted by: zecro

Well - I'm mixed about having a camera phone. Sure it's "cool" to have and all but practical - I dont know. I think it's just one more thing to have, to play with - I know for a fact I've had some fun moments to capture.

Of course, you cannot take your camera phone with you to some jobs.

I loved my 0.3 MP camera on my p800 until I saw what a 5MP camera could do - Now I just use it for quick snapshots to send over email/MMS

when a phone comes out with a 5-6Mp camera then I will be excited

Posted by: mozart11

With more and more places restricting your right to bring in your phone with a camera (gyms, all courthouses), I wish the camera part was an option. If I could have bought my V3 without a camera I would have.

The restrictions are only going to get worse too. The privacy issue with these camera phones is the new mission with some people. Watch and see how restrictive it will come. Store dressing rooms, so you will have to leave your phone with the attendant, same with restrooms. Fastfood places. Schools.

Mark my words.

i have a camera phone simply b/c i don't want to shell out 300 bucks minimum for a mediocre digital camera.

Yeah, what's wrong if you can get both?

Posted by: barroilh

In my gym they do not allow camera phones, and I need my phone with me there. Many places I have to visit for business overseas do not allow camera phones inside their premises. For me that is enough to hold on to my trusty Motorola v60i. I hope that we will always have a choice to buy a camera-less phone if we so choose.

signal strength plays a huge role in my decision for buying a phone but the quality of the camera plays a decision as well. The reason for having a camera phone is fairly simple. You never know when you're going to have a moment where you might want to have a camera handy.

In my case it's used for blackmail, for example: the camera phone pictures I have of my boss passed out drunk as hell are priceless. I would have never thought to bring a digital camera that day but am happy i brought my phone with me.

also other shots of interesting things. after all, who carries a camera with them 24/7?

Posted by: AdmiralAK

I will attempt to carry it 24/7 - how successful I will be no one knows

I wish the control channel for cingular was also 1900 (not just 850) that way I could use my p800 as well when I wanted to

I had 3 main requirements when I bought a new phone: reception, camera, and color screen, in that order. Fortunately for me, there are a few phones out there that fit the bill, the V400 bieng one of them.

Do I need a camera phone? Define "need". I "need" one around here because of all the accidents I witness (mostly due to tourons) and I like to take pics of all the stupid things I see (riced out cars, dumb things people do, etc.) like this:

I also have one from last week where a guy drove into a house up the street from me but I haven't downloaded that one yet.

But think about it: Do you NEED a computer? Do you NEED a television? Do you NEED car? Do you NEED any of the conveniences that technology has afforded us? No, you don't NEED any of it. People got along just fine before any of it existed. It's not a matter of need but a matter of WANT.

Very true, and macintoshcx brings up a valid point; cameras are the first thing discussed on new phones. Before the RAZR dropped, it was assumed that it came with a 1MP camera, and you could almost hear a collective sigh of disbelief when it was confirmed as a VGA... why? IT'S A PHONE FIRST AND FOREMOST!!

I want features and Bluetooth over video recording and/or 1MP camera. If I "need" to take a picture, I'll carry my little Cannon digital camera.

Posted by: peterd

i think alot of people have camera phones for the convenience factor and say something happens and you want to snag a quick pic. but u dont have ur digi cam. uh oh, so whip out your cameraphone and take a pic camera phones are great for spur-of-the-moment pics. and if your work or somewhere you go doesnt allow camera phones, put your sim in another phone, and when u get home or on weekends or something, put ur sim into ur good phone.

Interesting, though that thing is almost the size of the moto Micro-TAC.

I don't understand that much either...the camera isn't that great but they're still there; guess that it comes in handy when somebody rear ends me and I need to take a picture for evidence or something.

The Treo and V505 both have pretty horrid cameras IMO; and for whoever says that you need $300 minimum for a mediocre camera, try Canon A60 for $125.

Amen, brother!!!

Posted by: Donkey

To answer the ? No, I do not 'need' a camera phone. But the phones I like all have them. I just don't use the camera feature unless I have to. Like being said, in some accident to take pictures for evidences. Otherwise, it just being part of the phone I use. RF and sound quality are my top priority. The rest....I can live with it.

For me, my 6620 having a camera was just one of the extras. It's a fun thing to have around. Like someone said, to take pictures of stupid stuff, or funny stuff. I work in a Sam's Club out in West Texas, and my new favorite pasttime to do in the dead moments are to take pictures of the people walking out. You get some pretty redneck people out there. It's fun. And I have a Moblog set up on Textamerica that I can send my pics to, it's fun for my family back home to see things that I see. It's definitely not a necessity, but something that's fun and handy to have. And I agree, if your job won't let you have a camera, get a good backup phone, and just switch the SIMs when you get to work. It's not like Crappy Sprint or Verizon where you'd have to call them each time. That's the glory of GSM.

Exactly. If I cannot have a camera phone somewhere, I have an LG c1300. I can stand it for a little bit...
I am a teenager and I love taking stupid pics and pics of my friends and stuff. I don't have a digital camera, so having one on my phone is a requirement for me. Most phones these days have a camera on them, anyway. And for me, the camera has to be pretty decent. I will never own an lg c2000, because the camera on there is horrid. Everything is like, yellow.
My razr takes fairly good pics. If it were a better PHONE, it would be perfect. But unfortunatley, they aren't very good. I would own something like a w600i because of it's 1.3 mega-pixel camera. It has amazing color and a nice camera over-all, as well as my RAZR, although it's only .3 meg. I will never have a phone without a camera.

i dont carry a dig cam with me everywhere i go. i DO carry my phone everywhere i go. i have lots of opportunities to take pics and i do. and the camera on my treo or 8125 is quality enough for what i do with the pics, i not printing them out on 8x10 photo paper..so my phone cameras are great fro what i use them for.

I have a camera-phone and I think it's a good one...but I don't know how to use it.

But then again I still use film! Yea I know whats that?

Same here. I don't leave my house without my phone. My CAMERA phone.

In most cases one can simply not patronize businesses that prohibit camera phones. I certainly haven't found this to be an issue in practice. The worst that is going to happen anyway with a private business is that they tell you to leave. Keep in mind that businesses have a built-in incentive to keep you coming into the door, and, for example, searching everyone going into a public restroom isn't going to go over with most customers.

Courthouses are more of an issue. Could switch to a non-camera phone. One doesn't always have a choice about going to the courthouse. On the other hand, I'm 40, and have never been in a courthouse, so I'm not awake at night worrying about the possibility.

I need the phone because I'm on call. On the other hand, if I'm having to go to a courthouse for some reason, I'll need to find an alternate anyway.

Or get a siemens c61 or a phone with an attachable camera option.

I use my camera to take pics of hot babes butts and boobs.

What male dont lol .

I don't need a camera phone,in fact while I have several phones that have cameras,I could count on one hand when I've actually used the camera there to take a photo versus using a regular digital camera.

Unfortunately I have to frequent courthouses due to my work and there I have camera phones (or those that can record audio ) confiscated,so instead I leave those behind on those days and use either a regular old phone or forward all calls to my BB device for the day.

At my gym the rule is no phones beyond the lobby-camera phone or not, however they often selectively enforce this rule-there are some days where you'll get reamed for even looking at the phone, and others where you can chat away to your hearts content.

That's one of the reasons that I love GSM-the ability to change phones as needed-whether by necessity or whim.I remember in the past having various employers trying to force me to give up my phone say for a Verizon or SPCS phone, and people would ask why I wouldn't give up my personal line...but then again,I'm known for being a bit of a gadget person (that and bags/briefcases/shoes/pens.... LOL I guess the list could be endless )

Posted by: Rok3nIt

I will always have a camera phone, until they stop making them. :O

Posted by: Mark Larson

You guys are killing me over here. Cameras in phones are not worth two craps, and the Razr certainly doesn't have a "nice" camera.

Its very telling that the best camera on the market, the K750i can't take a picture worthy of a $50 digicam. As long as cameraphones suffer from small plastic lenses and small, TINY sensors, you won't have the quality. Right now you need good light in every cameraphone to get a good picture, which you don't need in a decent digicam.

And to the poster who said that he doesn't want a mediocre $300 digicam - are you living in 1999?

Posted by: microchip13

I would like to have a good camera phone, because I don't always carry my camera around with me.

I could be at school, and want to take a picture, but if I don't have a camera, wow, 640x480.

Seriously, think, do you carry your 5MP camera nearly everywhere you go? Probably not, but do you carry your phone with you everywhere you go?
Probably.

I was taking pictures with my S710a for this year at school but have had to stop since the LCD broke, my photo album ends with 15 pictures because taking a picture with my 6230 isn't worth it.

Posted by: CeluGeek

Do I need a camera phone? Not really, but even after the novelty of having a camera phone wore out, I've still used my camera phone to take a useful picture here and there so I wouldn't go back to just having camera-less phones.

To this date I still keep a T720 as a cameraless backup in case I really need it, like if I ever have to go to court. As for other places like gyms, restaurants and movie theaters banning cell phones... well, if you don't want the phone, then you don't want it's owner. Places with this policy aren't getting my business.

Posted by: ThinkALot

Having a phone in your camera is a fun feature...sure, people don't "need" that feature, but that's true of most gadget features these days.

Personally, my wife and I find it fun to send picture messages to each other when we're each at our work, or when one of us is travelling, etc. It's not so much the quality of the pics...of course they can't compare to a good digicam. But it's the convenience of having the camera with your everywhere, and of being connected to a cell phone network to send those pics immediately.

Posted by: cgd

The courthouse issue reared its head for me a couple of months back. I went to a class for work that was held in another state. The hosting entity held the class in a judicial facility because it had nice classrooms. Having read the class info beforehand, I figured we wouldn't be allowed a camphone and so brought backups. Some folks with me were dismayed to find out they had to take their $400 smartphones back to the truck for the day.

As for wanting a camera in a phone, I really don't. At some point, if you want certain other features in a phone, a camera seems to be included whether you want it or not. For example, I had a RAZR for awhile that I just wanted because of the look, the big display, the amazing reception, etc. It just happened to include a camera which I hardly ever used. Same with my Moto v557 now. As you can see from my profile, my phones are pretty much lower-end because the phone part of the deal is more important to me.

Posted by: Serifan

I don't really want or need a camera phone. I never use the camera function on my phones. I would love a high-end phone/device that actually doesn't sport a camera, but it just seems like these companies stick a camera on every phone, whether low or high end. I tried the Samsung D307 and D357, but the reception and sound quality wasn't up to par. RIM seems to be the only company that makes devices with no cameras. My objection to getting a Blackberry is that I really don't need those functions and certainly don't want a Balckberry plan.

Posted by: cowboys93

I use the camera/video recording feature casually. It's a great feature to have, but not a requirement.

I'm not going to carry a digital camera everywhere with me. Nor will I carry those throw away cameras (although they take better pictures than many camera phone).

On the rare occassion I need leave my phone behind, I switch to a Nokia 5190, or just lock the phone in my Truck.

I never bring my phone or wallet into the gym anyway.

Posted by: Rok3nIt

I use my camera all the time, I use my camera at least once a day, I end up deleting most of them for my memory, but still.
And to the poster that said something about no camera is good on a phone with a tiny sensor and a little plastic covering? Well there is a new samsung with a 5 MP camera. A PHONE with a 5MP CAMERA.

http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/09/...el-cameraphone/

Thats the one.

I don't feel like looking through the pages, since I think the answer is simple. Not everyone carries a digital camera with them. Most phones come with cameras, and there are more people with cell phones than there are people with digital cameras. With a cellphone you have the ability to snap a picture at any given moment and you can mail it off to a couple of your friends wherever you are, not something you can do with a digicam. It's a cool thing. Bleh.
