Bought SMT 5600--now need help with missing pieces

I took a flyer and purchased a very slightly used Audiovox SMT 5600 from a (former) AT&T user. Paid $200 and now I'll find out whether I made a good deal or not....

I have some newbie questions about how to get started with the phone. I have the original box, the USB cable and the charger. Also the belt case and earphones.

What I *don't* have is the original CD. The guy said he didn't know what he had done with it. Now I'm not sure what is on the CD and/or whether I can just download ActiveSync from Microsoft and it will work, or whether I need to scrounge up the CD or a copy of it from somewhere? If anyone here can make a copy of theirs and mail it, please contact me at: stp@pobox.com.

I also don't have a manual. I've found the online manual at audiovox.com, so that should suffice. Again, I'm not sure if there is a printed manual included with new, retail versions of this phone.

Next, I need to understand the unlocking procedure. The phone does not have a SIM in it...and I don't know if you need a SIM to unlock it??? Or is the phone itself what gets unlocked? Any pointers on this appreciated.

After it's unlocked I'll take it to T-Mobile and get it activated and then I can see how to get the Internet working on it.

I'm starting to wonder if I might have done better to just have bought a new one!

Looking forward to getting some guidance and tips.

Best regards,

You dont need the cd....it has activesync and outlook 2002 I think. Just download activesync from pocketpc.com

To unlock you can do a search there is a company here that does it Im not sure the name. but all you need is the cable and the IMEI # thats it.

let me know if you have any other questions....

I never used the CD as they have ActiveSync and sometimes Outlook so I don't remember if one was included.

No manual is included. The have nice step by step directions on AT&Ts site. Just enter 5555555555 for the phone number

Thanks! I think I've got the phone unlocked. It didn't work the first try, but on the second attempt the unlocking procedure went through.

I've installed Active-Sync on my computer, which allowed the phone to be recognized by the unlocking software, but I don't see any way to get it to synchronize with Outlook yet. I'm assuming that I have to get a SIM installed before that will work?

So it's off to T-Mobile to get a SIM/Plan and then I can proceed.

Thanks for the pointers...I'm looking forward to getting this bad boy working so I can experiment.

<< No manual is included.

There is ABSOLUTELY a manual.

I copied it to my HD and refer to it frequently.

I believe the manual is a PDF file included on the CD. But it is also available on the Audiovox.com website, along with a 20-page "Quickstart Guide." I've got them both on my computer now. Also jleecong reference to the AT&T Tutorials works and has a lot of extra data.

Update: the phone is unlocked and now working with a T-Mobile SIM. I'm just learning how to operate it and have a ways to go. I haven't tackled the settings for Internet yet--later today hopefully. But it's an awesome phone and I hope that Audiovox brings it back and other carriers support it.

I'd recommend getting one of T-Mobile's free phones. Actually, if you are a new user, I'd say get the phone from Amazon.com (one of the phones that gives you money back) and just use that sim for the 5600, and either keep the phone as a backup or sell it. Don't bring the audiovox into a t-mobile store-you want to take advantage of any subsidies you get when you do a new 1 yr contract.

Good idea. I've got a "trial" plan with T-Mobile now--and the SIM was installed in the Audiovox. But my salesguy there has gotten to know me by now and he knows I'm going to come in and cancel the plan I'm on and then choose another for my "final." My wife needs a phone too. We're thinking of one of the "Family Plans" but I can't really see much advantage to them. But I will check out any specials that are tied to a phone purchase.
