I can not find the directions for making ringtones. How do you convert and do all of that?

FYI. I'm kinda tired, so please let me know of any problems/typos.

Step-by-Step Guide
Creating MP3 Ringtones
Sony SoundForge 7.0
  1. Start Sony SoundForge 7.0
  2. Go to File>Open> [select your mp3 song]
    Auto-play: Doesn't matter
    Open as read-only: No
    Merge L/R to Stereo: No
  3. Listen to song and decide what 20-30 second section you want for your ringtone
  4. Click once at approximate beginning point of desired ringtone. A vertical line should appear where you clicked.
It doesn't matter if the line appears on the top only, bottom only, or both.. We'll adjust that in a moment.
  5. Look at the bottom right corner of the screen. You should see three boxes. The left box will have a time stamp. This is the time of where the line is that you just created (the approximate beginning of the ringtone). The two boxes to the right should be empty. Double-click the center empty box. If you don't know what box I'm talking about, it's the one directly above the "Mono" or "Stereo" label.
  6. You should have opened the "Set Selection" window. The start time should be the point you selected in step 4. The end time will default to the same as the start time. [You can also access the "Set Selection" window by going to Edit>Selection>Set... from the menu. However, your start time may not be set corrected if you use this method.] Make sure the following settings match:
    Selection: (Custom)
    Channel: Both
    Input Format: Time
  7. Keeping the Start time the same, change the End time to approximately 20-30 seconds after the Start time. Be careful to type the time in the correct format: H:MM:SS.sss H=Hours, M=Minutes, S=Seconds, s=Milliseconds
  8. Press "Play" to play the 20-30 second clip. You can adjust the Start time and the End time until you are happy with the clip. The Length will automatically adjust, or you can change the Length and it'll automatically set a new End time.
  9. When you are happy with your selection, press "OK". Do not click anything else. The clip you just selected will be highlighted.
  10. Go to Edit>Trim/Crop. Your selection will now be the only thing on the screen. Now you are ready to save it.
  11. Go to File>Save As...
  12. Press "Custom"
  13. Select "Convert to Mono"
  14. Change the Bit Rate if desired. Depending on the song and the number of ringtones you have, 32 Kbps or 64 Kbps will be good. The size of a 30 second clip will be approximately:
    125 KB @ 32 Kbps, 22,050 Hz
    250 KB @ 64 Kbps, 44,100 Hz
    350 KB @ 96 Kbps, 44,100 Hz
  15. Make sure the following settings are selected:
    VBR Quality: No
    Quality: Far left (highest quality)
    Property Marking: None
  16. Press "OK"
  17. Select the directory/filename for your ringtone.
Save as type: "MP3 audio (*.mp3)"
    Recent: Don't change
    Save metadata with file: No
  18. Press "Save"

Note: Unregistered copies of SoundForge will only allow 10 saves. Use them wisely.

The VBR Quality, Quality, and Property Marking are all still on the "Custom Template". When you have your sound clip ready, you click, "Save As..." On that screen, you click, "Custom". Select whatever bit rate you want, then move the Quality tab to the far left. Make sure the VBR Quality box is NOT checked. Check the "Convert to mono" box. If you already have a mono clip, that box will be greyed out. Then, make sure none of the boxes in "Property Marking" are checked (Copyrighted, Private, Original Internet). Click OK, and save the file as type "MP3 audio". Type in the name you want to save it as and press "Save".

I have Soundforge version 7.0. If some of those boxes don't exist on your version, then you can probably ignore that detail.
Good luck.
