HELP NEEDED getting mp3 ringtone onto VX 6100

I need some help getting my LG VX 6100 to play mp3s as ringtones.

I am using a cable and bitpim and have no problem putting pictures and midi ringtones on the phone. (Incidently, I'm using the new Bitpim, with the 6100 profile.)

But I can't get mp3 ringtones to work on the phone - I send them, and see them listed in my "Media" under "Sounds" but the phone won't play them. I select them and... silence.

I've got a 30 second mp3 clip and I've used iTunes to change it to 96 kbps, 44 kHz and it doesn't play. I've tried redoing it at 32 and 16 kbps and dropping the sampling rate to 16 kHz. All combinations of the above transfer ok but the phone won't play them.

Can anyone help me?

Thanks.

I've been using Soundforge to encode my mp3's and have yet to get an mp3 to work on either my VX6100 or my Audiovox 8900. I started with the settings I've seen suggested in the tutorials I've seen for doing this of 64kbps/mono.

My advice would be to try a different audio program as it sounds like Itunes might have the same issue as Soundforge does. I had no luck at all getting an mp3 to work when using Soundforge. I tried about 10 different encoding schemes and they would all never play on my phone, I'd just get silence when I tried to use Soundforge encoded mp3's.

I switched to Adobe Audition 1.5 and the very first mp3 I encoded worked like a charm on my phone. I used these settings to encode it : 64kbps 44100khz mono. The sound quality is much better than the other suggested encoding settings I've seen in the various tutorials on getting mp3's on the 8900 and/or 6100. Also, don't worry about changing the mp3 to a mid, you don't need to. And the whole 'keep your mp3 at or under 100kb isn't true either.' My current ringtone is 238kb.

I used a total of 3 steps to get my ringtone from pc to phone. First, trim 30 seconds out of the desired mp3, encode to above settings, open Brewsky/Bitpim and upload to phone. No renaming, no crappy codec settings and it worked great.

Hope this helps.

Psyclone, thanks for that guide.

Could you point me to what cable you use to hook your phone up to your PC?

I have this cable :

FYI, it works for both an Audiovox 8900 and an LG VX6100.
