my S46. Or, how i learned to stop worrying and love this crap

So last night my s46, without any prompting, turned itself off. In and of iteself, this is not unusual behavior from this, my third s46. However, it won't turn back on. I've done all the normal things to no avail.

Any thoughts?

They might be giving you phones with the old firmware, which I've heard and read is quite problematic. I just got my S46 last week, and it's working just fine. None of the power on/off problems or anything of that nature. The only question I have right now is about battery life, and whether it will actually perform to the specs that are claimed. But that's a whole other story.

I would try to find out if your phone has version 21 of the firmware, which supposedly fixes the problems.

Who is your provider? This is an old problem, and if they are giving you old firmware phones, demand a new one with version 21. Take a bite out of someone's arse.

Battery life in standby and talk GSM mode ROCKS. I can't remember the last time I charged my phone. With limited use, it can almost last through my workweek. If you are gabbing and messing with it with vibrate on, you can expect to charge it twice a week.

Beware, this phone switches networks in auto mode. If you talk most of the time in a TDMA area (ATT vs. ATT WIRELESS GSM SIGNAL) then you can't take full advantage of the phone's Li battery. It's not the phone, it's your area/signal.

OK, so my battery isnt the problem (or so I think). I can't even get the phone to turn on to tell what the firmware is.

I ordered another one from att, and had them move me to the GSM-only charter plan, so at least im not paying through the nose for TDMA service that i never use. wtf? im sure firmware isnt the only culprit here.

ATT is retarded for giving you an old firmware model, or a defective model for that matter. Siemens is the best high end business phone they offer right now. I don't know about GSM only. I rarely use TDMA, but it's essential for the occasional road trip, and a must when going to Mexico or something.

How could you be paying up the nose for TDMA? It should be the other way around. GSM is the new expensive techno crap. TDMA is ghetto tech. Well, it's all ghetto tech really. We're light years behind what should be available. See Japan, Korean, etc. East is east.

Well, this silly thing is going to last me only as long as it takes TMO to get the 7210 (or for me to get one unlocked sub $350). So I figure I'm not going anywhere anytime soon, and I'm saving >$60/month by going to GSM-only (from the 900 minute one-rate plan), so wtf.

And yes, ATTWS is retarded.

So it turned itself back on last night for a bit, and i managed to get the firmware version out of it before it quit again. 21.25something. Does this mean anything to anyone?

21 version is good. Your phone, doing this crapola with that version, is defective. ATT should replace it. That's all folks.

Do you know how you were able to turn it back on? My phone has done the same thing and I have the replacement phone. I just want to try and get the numbers off before I send it in.

thanks!

Old firmware, phones switching off when can't find a signal. Big problem pre Vers 62. "Phone will not switch on". I have not seen this problem on any of the boards
Hope this is not insulting. If the phone went off because the battery is really drained. When you connect the charger it may take 2 hours before the phone does anything. See manual, page 13 "EMPTY BATTERY"
If you are now, ready to call me a ?^%&*(*&(*(*.
My apologies, just a helpful thought.

Hey Frank,

No apologies needed... I've tried many batteries that have been fully charged and have left the phone plugged in as well.... still nothing.

Oh well... I guess I'll just have to input the 100 phone numbers I had from memory.

Thanks again for your help, though.

Did u get a replacement new phone from AT&T?
Re, the inputting the phone numbers etc. I had 3 phones in 30 days (Vers 21 - Vers 62), I kept the SIM from the 1st one & luckily had put the address book in my Palm via the Irda.
That left me with just having to transfer address's one at a time plus phone settings/profiles etc. Took some time but not as slow as manually imputing everything from my Nokia 8260 which had no upload/download capability.

Good Luck.

Yeah, I got a replacement from ATT. I WISH I had put the numbers on the sim card instead of the phone's address book. That's why I was hoping that I could at least turn the old phone on again. That way I could transfer the numbers via IR or copy them to the sim

Try putting the phone in "GSM Only" mode (if you're in a good GSM area), and see if you still have a problem. I used to have random shut-off problems while in "Automatic" mode. If I go into an area where I know that TDMA works better - then I manually switch the phone to "TDMA Only". Let us know if that helps.

Vers 21.5 is long gone. (ie. 2 months old) since then they brought out vers 49 vers 62 vers 64. I think V64 is the latest, though there are some minor changes between the full version changes. Example SW 64.1234 then 64.1238 & so on. I have SW 62.5400 HW 3.021002.
I refer you to my previous comment on this subject.
