Fido and Hiptop2

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Ok let me clear things up for everyone as I am seeing tons of new threads each day in the fido forum and here in the Danger forum.

Fido has officially discounted the org. Hiptop. It's speculated they have cleared stock making way for the Hiptop2.

Many well known forum members say it's been Rumored to be coming in either Jan. or Feb. 2005. That's all that is known to this date. I have heard from several Fido CSR's that it's in testing at the moment.

I just want to clear everything up so we don't create multiple posts each day about this.

Thank you for clearing all that up for us...

Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Kismet

No Problem, and Now to add:

A few Fido CSR's have once again confirmed the Hiptop2 will be released in Febuary 2005 however pricing isn't solid yet either (I've heard rumors but nothing solid)

whoa, what is a hiptop2? is that different from the SK2???

Posted by: kismet

Its the same thing....

Exactly with kismit said.

The hiptop2 is the version available from Fido and Suncom. Exactly the same just different names.

From what I hear Fido supports WAP on these things. but that is just an impression I am getting.

Nope WAP is not supported on the hiptops either at this time.

What about Java programs written in J2ME and not the Danger SDK they provide? I remember a press release eons ago regarding an agreement between Sun and Danger, but in retrospect, it seems like smoke and mirrors to me.

Doesnt the Fido Hiptop have 2 seperate browsers? If not has anyone tried loading an actual wap page? WAP I think might be implemented in other providers like Fido but not for Tmobile.....if not some sites might just allow xhtml rendering on the hiptop thru dangers' servers (APN).

I really hope Fido gets the hiptop II

it's a bad a$$ phone, and I'm moving to canada in the summer... maybe!

Posted by: kismet

I spoke to another agent from Fido and they said the Hiptop 2 won't be available until March now....

I don't know why they won't just release a date for it, instead of teasing everyone.

Just in case anyone is still skeptical about Fido releasing Hiptop II or changing their minds about it last minute, the tech department CSR's at the call center have them. When a new handset is given to them to try out, it means its already been approved to market. And it is in the very LAST stages of "testing"

Posted by: Prom1

Geniius, thanks for the news.

Questions:
1) Can anyone attest to success of sending photos taking from one phone/SKII to another SK II via email and "Save" the Photo into the Gallery &/ as a Caller ID Photo?
(this isn't Possible on Tmobile SK II)

2) Can WAP pages be surfed?

3) Is there any hint of a new browser (higher than v2.0/2.1) that supports JavaScripting for websites.

4) Is there a problem with enabling Privacy Lock and once entered upon boot-up, and GPRS is attached & Menu is accessible.....Does the device "freeze" when accessing the camera? And if so is the problem only fixed with a complete Hard Reset (pin & power button)

thanks.
PM with answers if you like.
cheers

I have unlimited Data and Voice on it, Check out the Fido forum, Somebody already posted about the H2 and posted pictures as well. I personally like the improved Scroll wheel, the built in Camera is good, but I don't find the flash too bright.. The volume of sounds/ringers is really loud and clear though, I'm impressed...

I'll post more later.

Hi Guys,

I switched from Rogers to Fido last year to take advantage of the Home & Away plan ($70 a month, unlimited local calls, incoming calls considered local anywhere in Canada served by Fido digital and 850 long distance included Canada and US).

As a business user, what a great plan.

I was going to pick up the original HipTop, but found it had a few drawbacks. The fellow at the Fido kiosk told me that the HipTop2 was coming out in early 2005, Sooo...sign up without a plan so I can upgrade to the HipTop2 when it comes out.

Well, as off tonight, Fido is discontinuing the Home & Away plan, so in order for me to keep the plan for two years, I have to sign a contract today.

I talked to the customer service people at Fido while doing this and they have no info on when the Hiptop2 is being released. Further, I only have 15 days to upgrade my phone or I am locked out of upgrading it for two years.

Are you sure the release date is March 8th? I really, really hope so!!! Currently I have a bleeding edge Sony Ericsson T237....

Thanks,

Colleen

yes march 8th

http://www.fido.ca/portal/product/h...2&lang=en&cat=1

It's finally up on fido.ca as "coming soon"

Posted by: snickerzmom

Thanks for the information.

To the people who have tested the new Hiptop2...Is the lack of 850 a problem?

Has anyone taking one for a run along the 407 to see if it is dropping calls?

I will need it for the phone as much as for its other features and if it will drop calls frequently or have signal issues, it will be a problem for me.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Colleen

Posted by: kismet

So no one has a price for it yet????

If its being released next week, someone must know.

Posted by: blakas

Do existing Fido contract users have any way of receiving a discount when purchasing the new Hiptop 2? Or are we forced to buy the Hiptop 2 at the M2M price.

Posted by: Infinite

m2m of course....

you got a huge discount when you signed the contract.
