Proof of concept: MobileIM Java applet on MPx220

Just so you know now, it doesn't actually function yet. But read on.

Desperate to get a working and reliable IM solution on my Smartphone (see other thread I started), I did a search here on HowardForums and found someone's post of MobileIM apparently extracted from a Motorola V600. I modified the JAD (description) file so that it would pull the JAR (archive) file from my site.

Lo and behold, the application installed and ran! However, I was being prompted by the Java runtime module that it was seeking specific permissions, such as connecting to the network and such. I allowed it and it came up with the main screen of the Mobile IM interface!

Mobile IM uses SMS to send and receive text messages (as we all know by now and its references to SMS://:3716 when launching).

I get a Network Error and it doesn't seem to want to connect under any circumstances. Also, backspacing is a pain, as I have to hit the Back button, followed by the Right cursor in order to delete the last character. Lastly, Motorola's iTAP does not seem to function, as Mobile IM's ABC/abc/123 input method overrides the system, or is not available in Java applets.

If anyone wants to try it for yourself, browse on your phone to www.beyondthetech.com/downloads/phone/java, or easier enough, create a shortcut on your desktop to that link, then drag it into your \Storage\Windows\Favorites folder on your Smartphone through ActiveSync. Then, simply click on the MobileIM.jad file on your Smartphone and watch the Java runtime module take over.
