Wireless HTML Browser Enhancements Improve Performance and Enable Easy Access to Personalized Content

ATLANTA & WATERLOO, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 5, 2005-- EarthLink (NASDAQ:ELNK - News), one of the nation's leading ISPs and Research In Motion (RIM) (NASDAQ:RIMM - News; TSX:RIM - News), a world leader in mobile communications, today announced the availability of an enhanced HTML wireless browser for the BlackBerry 7750(TM). The enhanced BlackBerry® Browser enables users to enjoy an improved wireless Internet experience by optimizing performance and presentation and seamlessly integrating with personalized content from EarthLink's Personal Start Page.

The BlackBerry browsing service, with full HTML support, is included at no additional cost from EarthLink Wireless. Supporting rich graphics and pictures, the BlackBerry Browser also incorporates compression technology that results in faster load times, bandwidth savings and battery life conservation. With this enhancement, the BlackBerry 7750 from EarthLink displays most html-based websites, optimizing the appearance and size of content for the wireless handheld.

"By offering this browser upgrade EarthLink continues to build upon its reputation for creating an easy to use Internet experience," said Brent Cobb, vice president, EarthLink Wireless. "Faster than other mobile browsers, the BlackBerry 7750 from EarthLink lets subscribers quickly access their personalized content on the EarthLink Personal Start Page."

"Mobile professionals want wireless access to a variety of information on the go, including web content," said Mark Guibert, Vice President, Corporate Marketing at Research In Motion. "EarthLink is leveraging the power of this new BlackBerry browsing technology to offer a personalized web content experience for its customers. We think this will prove very popular."

EarthLink Wireless customers using the BlackBerry 7750 receive the free enhanced browser automatically over the network with no end user intervention required. It now becomes a standard feature of the BlackBerry wireless data and voice offering from EarthLink which launched earlier this year and combines phone, email, Internet access and other applications, making EarthLink the first ISP to offer a complete wireless data and voice solution.

Absolutely

They are the last to come out with everything for the BBs. Last with 3.6, last with BWC, last with color and last (and still missing) with a built in web browser.

Thank goodness VZW has decent coverage, or I would have jumped ship years ago. The 70 year old guy running the equipment bureau, the one who has a secretary 'cause he still can't type on that new fangled computer, needs to be put out to pasture. VZW is a sorry mess when it comes to devices. I am coming up on my contract on my 2 LG6100 phones and have decided to get a BB. Now, my only choice is do I jump to t-mobile or cingular for it? Maybe Cinular, as I would like a Razr phone too. How can you have the clout of having the biggest customer base and be this poor at throwing your wait around with the suppliers? Seems the only people VZX gets heavy handed with are their customers.

Your disgust on their techlust (or lack thereof) is well placed.

Go ahead and pencil them in "last" for the 7100 as well! They stink!

Last indeed! Little Cingular even has their own version coming out, the 7100g; they figured out a way to work with the vendor and 'jump' the t-mobile exclusive time frame. Kudos.

WSJ says that RIM is posting some nice profits, now that the BB is really taking off overseas.

Thanks goodness! Now we can hope that Korea or some other large CDMA market will push RIM to make a CDMA version of the 7100, and we in the US on VZW can enjoy the spillover, or crumbs, as it were, from that country's carrier who follows the trends and listens to the customers.

Revenue per subscriber is dropping like a stone (I remember when it was $120/sub/month, now about half that), competition is fierce, and stockholders are pushing for good quarters. Why are you pushing your early adopters to the competition? It makes no sense. Using 2 year old stuff with poor featuresets ain't attracting new customers, and you can count on the other guys networks to eventually improve, so you end up with no EDGE (pardon the pun) left!
