Replace certain files

Hello again, I've been having fun adding Metallica ringtones and wallpapers... but I have a new question. Both Danielle and I absolutely hate the startup sound on our KX414's... but if you try to overwrite/delete the file
\user\sound\default\Startup_generic.mid ... you get access denied. I tried putting the phone in Offline mode, but that didn't help.

Anyone know of a way to replace these files that are supposedly "in use" (even though it just plays once ) ?

I have done this with my KE424C but you must directly modify the flash memory on the phone, which is pretty risky.

Even then the file itself cannot be overwritten, you have to upload a silent MIDI file to the same directory as the existing file, and modify the phone's flash programming to point to the new silent file.

It's alot of work.

I was thinking more like having it use a different sound... such as the "T-Mobile" chimes

Well you can do that too.

You'd have to get that sound file, upload it into the same directory as the startup sound, and then modify the programming to point to the new startup sound file.

It can be done, it's just risky and time consuming for such a small change. I was just extremely bored that night I did it, and realized it was very possible I'd screw up my phone, but it was under warranty at the time.

Any help on where to start with that?

You need to find the tools to download the flash memory to a binary file on your computer, and then a hex editor to search for and then modify the reference to the existing startup sound.

I can make a backup using the Kyocera Phone Support Tools... but there's no reference to the startup sound. just references to using Phantom_Ringer.mid as the default in case a custom ringtone is deleted

I just spent the last 10 minutes scrolling through the QCN file created by KPST's Download.exe ... nothinging.

No no no... Kyocera programs (including the PST) will do nothing for you...

You need the underground tools (like the programs sold on Russian CDMA sites) to extract the flash data directly to a .BIN file.

Of course, there are places you can find them for free, but I really think that if you don't know where to find these tools, you really shouldn't be considering modifying the flash memory on the phone... Your phone will be toast if you screw it up.
