MP3's ! They are RINGTONES / A Quick howto using Audacity

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: 3dmac

Using Audacity, heres a quick howto:

The sample rate needs to be set at 16000 @ 32bit mono. Audacity will let you change this from a stereo mp3 file. Import the mp3, set the project rate to 16000 ( from 44100 that is defalt) and choose "Quick Mix". This will blend both left and right channels together. Select the left channel and change it to mono. Delet the right channel. Edit the song to about 30sec. , this will keep the file size at between 76k to 108k when saved in mp3 format. Also pay attention to the level, when playing it. If it is to loud, reduce the out put level to -6db and resave it. Change the .mp3 to .mid and there you go. You are now ready to load your new ringtone to your phone.

I am with you up until transferring over to .mid

I cannot do that for some reason...please help

Posted by: 3dmac

The extension at the end of yor new tone (.mp3) needs to be changed to (.mid).
You should be able to click and highlight the ".mp3" and type in ".mid" and hit enter. The system may ask you if this is ok, hit yes and your ready to load it to the phone.

You may need to set your view to see the extensions. Do it like this. Go into windows explorer. At the top, click on tools, then folder options, go to the view tab. Under "files and folders" folder, look for "Hide extensions for known file types". Uncheck that. Now you should be able to see the extensions. When go to the area that you have your mp3's at you should see that as an extension. Just change the extension from .mp3 to .mid

That should do it. At least, it worked for me.

Posted by: aeguy826

hey bro i was wondering how you selected the left channel only can you please help with that only

Posted by: howie721

You need to click on the arrow pointing down

Click on the left channel and do what you will with it

I am totally confused with the process specifically about getting it to the actual phone

Posted by: underground man

i cannot get this to work on my 3200. i keep getting the error "an exception has occured" while trying to put the file on my phone. is there any special way it needs to go on the phone aside from the filesystem method listed on one of threads?

UG MAN,
Can you post a copy of the log file so we can see what is happening just before the exception.

i actually fixed the first problem. turns out the phone automatically closed the pc connection after it rebooted. go fig. i do have a new problem, though, which is happening with some mp3's and not others. i've successfully loaded two onto my phone, but 2 or 3 have failed with another exception. here's the log:

also, i've followed the steps exactly but all of my 20-25 sec songs end up between 250k and 400k, instead of 100k. i think it's a possibility that my phone just ran out of memory after the first two. im not really sure what to do, though, since i followed those steps and they still came out somewhat large...

9:54:15.446 LG-VX4500: Writing file 'user/sound/ringer/dillinger.mid' bytes 381457 <------ This is your problem .FILE SIZE 381k is way to large ! You have tried to and exceded the available file space . I would kill a couple to open up some space before the phone locks up. The file sizes can come in around 108k for 30sec.
Here is a short step/step: Load in your song in audacity, Then edit the length to 30sec segment you want. NOW before you choose "QuickMix" change the "Progect Rate" (on the bottom left) to 16000 hz., them hit Quick Mix. This is were it looks like the error is causing those BIG file sizes. You can get up to 3 30sec. files in the same space as that +381k file.

I love mp3 ringtones. The only problem is when you're in a slightly noisey situation, even just in a car, you can't hear it sometimes. They're ok when you're in an office or at home.

By the way, if you're using bitpim to put these files on you vx6000, you don't need to change the extension to .mid. .mp3 works fine and .qcp makes it repeat (when the phone is ringing, not when you listen to it in my media/music.

Posted by: howie721

My files seem to be ok but when i go on the verizon wireless website to send it to myself (thats how you do it right) no actual file shows up

All I see are files with nothing in them (switching it to .mid doenst seem to be working for me)

Help!!

Posted by: underground man

thanks for the suggestions, 3dmac, but that's pretty much what i've been doing. i went through your steps again to make sure, and for some reason my files keep coming out 300k+. i've been able to fit three 20-25 second files on my phone (by deleting some previous polyphonic ringtones) but i'd love to be able to fit more. any more ideas? i only seem to be able to get it down in the 100k area by saving it as an ogg vorbis midi file, which the phone will upload but will not play. hmmm...i must be doing something wrong.

Posted by: 3dmac

UnGMan,
Lets try this. Email me a few of what you have and I will look at them.
Make sure you change the extensions back to .mp3 before you send them.

Ok....I opened an mp3. I selected Quick Mix. There is only 1 menu for the channels so I Split the selections and was able to delete the right channel and change the left channel to Mono. I edited the song to 30 seconds. I saved the project rate to 16000.
When I look at the end result, the file is only 1.24kb.
What am I doing wrong?
Also, how do you save it without saving it as a project? It says I need a lame mp3 .dll to save it as an mp3.

That's your problem there. Download the LAME dll. There is a link on the Audacity site. Then go into prefferences and tell it where you unzipped it.

Posted by: TTABBAL

As a note to help people. I've found it much faster to trim the song to the section I want before doing the quick mix. That way, it only mixes the part I want, not the whole song. Only takes a few seconds that way, no more than 5sec.

I've found that the phone is kind of picky with settings. If your song doesn't play on the phone, just try some other settings. I've had good luck with 22Khz and 24Kbps. The 16000 option is always greyed out for me, so I just use the 22050 option instead. I end up with 45 second clips about 130KB in size.

Also, I've found that I don't need to rename the files to .mid, .mp3 works fine. I'm using the latest bitpim and both a 6100 and a 4500. Both work fine this way. I found this quite by accident, just forgot to rename one and it worked anyway. In the filesystem view in bitpim, they show as .mp3, so the phones know what they are. Interesting.... I have no idea if this works on other setups.

File>Prefferences>File Formats>Find Library

Saving: File>Export As MP3

I don't mean to be rude, but this is Windows 101 stuff. If you want to hack a cellphone, you should learn it.

for some reason my 15 second files keep coming out about 300k. I changed the project rate to 16000, cut out the section I wanted, selected quick mix, seperated the tracts, clicked the 'x' on the right track (I think this may be the problem, is this how to delete it?), set the left side to mono and exported as an mp3. Why do they keep coming out so large, any ideas?

Posted by: a1drewski

I just figured out one way. Go into the preferences and decrease the quality of the exported mp3
File>preferences>file format

I changed it from 128 to 64, is this what any of you did to decrease the size?

Posted by: a1drewski

Last time,
I am trying to send the ones I made to my phone using email and vzwpix website, but it keeps saying unsupported content type no matter what extension I use, .mid .mp3 .wav

Posted by: 3dmac

A1,
After you set the project rate at the lower left of the work area to 16000hz,then do a QuickMix, do the mixed channels now say "stereo -16000hz, 32bit-rate"
?? This is what thet should say if you have done things right.
Yes, by clicking the "X" on the top LH corner of the right channel info box will delete it.(it will clear it from the screen)
Don't change the file rate. Leave it at the default.
I get file sizes from 108k to 176k for a file of 30-45 sec.

Make sure when saving them, don't add any file info into the edit ID3 tags screen or this will make the files larger because of the unneeded text.

If you need to , PM me

3dmac
Send me a sample to look at if you wish.

Posted by: 3dmac

Oh, and 1 thing !!

Get a futuredial cable and load them the right way. I can not get VZw site to do JACK for me. Data cable direct is the best and most efficient.

Posted by: EngineDave

I don't like the sound quality of 16000. I edit my file with Goldwave and when I save it I choose 22050-16 mono.

Posted by: 3dmac

enginedave: The speakers on cell phones are not that responsive, and can't reproduce bass very well. The diff. in quality between 16000 and 22050 in reality is not much noticable tonal diff. through these speakers. But cutting the bit rate to 16bps from 32bps is cutting out alot of the highend tonal quality (which these speakers CAN reproduce).
Your file sizes between 16000hz@32bps and 22050hz@16bps is a close even trade but with as I said, Better highend keeping the OE bitrate @ 32bps.

3dmac

Posted by: EngineDave

Did I say 22050-16? I meant 22050-32. Sorry for the confusion. I just noticed a slight diff.

Posted by: tcricket

Yes, I too have been having problems with my files being too large. I have done everything as you said. The only thing I can come up with that may be the problem is deleting the right channel. What process did you use to delete the right channel?

Posted by: 3dmac

After doing the Quick Mix, click on the down arrow in the name box(top left next to the "X") then select Split Tracks. This will give you left and right. Click the "X" box top left and it's deleted.

Could someone please help me?

I converted my mp3's to wav files, and cut down songs to 30 sec. I didn't make any other changes to the song format. However, I am only able to download 3 of these ringtones to my 8000. The phone says that my memory is full. What am I doing wrong? Is it incorrect to convert the song to wav file? I see some people post that they have wav files, others midi. What is the bit rate and where do I change it? Is that my problem?

I am a computer idiot, so I would really appreciate some how-to advice in simple english. Thanks so much.

Posted by: 3dmac

Jerseygirl :
They need to converted mp3s', Wav format is almost as BIG as raw audio. There is little if no compression of the file.(only saving the important info). Mp3 is what these phone read best and the file sizes are alot smaller.(GIN downloaded ringers are in MP3 format). You can also use actual Midi songs that you can get for free, just do a search for "Midi song" most web sites you visit that have an electronic keyboard music playing are midi file songs. These are the small file due to the fact that they are only a code (program) that tells the sound chip what tones to play. You computer also uses these same files for sound it makes.
Go to the begining of this post and read my HowTO with audacity. This is a free program that does the job fast and simple. A 30 sec. ringer should be around 76-170kb. in size and you can get almost 20 of these on your phone !.

3dmac

PM me and I will send you a sample !

You adjust the decible(volume) by using the tracks - \/ + slider

phone I had no problems and they were

fine, however I went back into audacity

after about two months of not making any

and when I try to set the project rate to

16000Hz i is grayed out. Any thoughts?

Posted by: 3dmac

Can you choose 22050hz ? That will work fine also with just a little file increase. If this is not posible, try removing and reinstalling the program. I'm a MAC OSX Guy and don't have these probs.

Posted by: ToniM

I'm having a lot of trouble with file size too and I'm following the instructions exactly. I'm loading the MP3, setting the project rate to 16000, selecting Quick Mix, selecting Split Stereo Track, deleting the right channel, changing the left channel to Mono, trimming the MP3 to 30 - 45 seconds.

When I do this, under Mix it says "Mono, 16000Hz, 32-bit float". I've been amplifying the trimmed MP3 most of the time, but I've tried several times without amplifying too. I Export Selection as MP3, give it a name, and save it.

My file sizes are ranging between 322 KB and 430 KB, with one as large as 515 KB. I have no idea what I might be doing wrong.

If anyone has any suggestions, I'd really appreciate it.

Posted by: lexluthor

Toni,

It's the bit rate that's the biggest factor in file size.

Go into file->prefs and set the mp3 export bit rate to 64K. That's a decent compromise between sound quality and saving space. A 30 second mp3 should be under 300K.

Posted by: yostix

Toni, I figured it out. It took a while, but I found the right way to do it:

Import an mp3 into Audacity.

Choose the 30 seconds you want out of the mp3 and delete the rest.

In the bottom left, choose 16000hz for the project rate.
*EDIT* you can leave it at 44,100. I just tried it and it made no difference in file size.

Click file > Preferences > File formats and change bitrate to 32.

Do the Quick mix.

Then you'll notice that your song grew a few seconds after the 30 second mark. Delete that extra stuff.

Click the drop down arrow next to "mix" and shoose separate stereo tracks.

Turn left track to mono.

Delete right track.

Export to mp3.

Then either you're done, or you can change mp3 file extension to .mid

If you're final product crackles, then you need to slide the gain to the left and then "save as mp3" again. I had to slide my ""'Coldplay-Clocks" to -15db before it would stop crackling.

Posted by: ToniM

Thank you guys, it's working great now

Posted by: Mangudai

How do you go about deleting the right channel and making the left one mono?

Posted by: ToniM

There's a drop-down box on the left where the name of the MP3 is - click that and come down to Split Stereo Track. It will open a left and a right channel, and you can click the X in the corner to close (delete) the right channel.

Edit: Forgot to mention how to make the left mono. After you delete the right channel, click the same drop-down and select Mono.

Posted by: amped

I'm not sure if anyone else has this problem, because I can't find an answer to it.

I was editing and shaving down an mp3 last night to use as a ringtone(Touch Me, by The Doors). If you're not familiar with the song, the left track is heavy on drums and bass, while the right track is all guitar, and the vocals are mixed.

I change the file format, do a quick mix, split the tracks, delete the right, make the left mono, but for some reason, I'm still only hearing the left track. The quick mix doesn't seem to be mixing the tracks correctly.

Anyone know what's going on?

Posted by: 3dmac

You are not doing anything wrong. Some songs with HEAVY Instrumentation on one channel when blended, the liter side gets washed out. Before deleting any channel, play it idipendently and see wich channel sounds best and choose it as the ringer. You mat also try mixing it a second time after trimming it a little.
3dmac

Posted by: amped

Found a better solution =)

I now use Sony Sound Forge 8.0 to trim the music and mix the channels(they mix fine on SF for some reason). Then I open it with Audacity to re-encode at a lower bitrate.

So to anyone that likes these ringtones with this kind of "heavy instrumentation," I suggest obtaining Sony Sound Forge(in whatever way you find suitable).

3Dmac I have the LGvx4500 and according to the phone I have the following software version:

T45VZV02

With the browser version at:

6.2.2.4.145

It is odd because I can add only one ringer and one picture to the phone using bitpim.

I place the one ringer in user/dnld/sound and the one picture in brew/shared.

I did notice that after doing a dump of the two corresponding map files after and upload and a power cycle they do not update with the other images or music file names.

Posted by: 3dmac

Fumanchu128
#1 you are almost doing things right !
a: The ringers are located in the - user/sound/ringer , then you need to DELETE the -download/dloadindex/brewRingerindex.map file. Then reboot the phone and the tones will now be in your menu 6/2 (music)
b: you are loading the pics in the correct place - brew/shared/. But DELETE
the-download/dloadImageindex.map file. Then reboot the phone and the pics will now be in your menu 6/1 (Graphics)
These deleted map files will be remade by the phone to contain all the files each folder.
Bitpim since version 7.18 does all this for you on the LG VX4500 !!

You need to know that each ringer or pic you add you need to select(highlight) it in the list file section on the bottom of the window then send data/ new .

Do this for both the Wallpaper and Ringers tab windows.

T45VZV02 is last years version up till Nov.28th 2004 v04 update which I have loaded on my phone. This does not make any diff. as to what you can load to the phone.

3dmac

Posted by: fumanchu182

Proper use of bitpim would also help, thanks 3dmac you da man and it helped. But the great thing is that now that bitpim is on the right setting (it was on xv4400 because of my se47) I don't need to edit the filesystem manually, bitpim does it for me!

This phone is wonderful now.

Ok, I did it but your instructions were only partially correct.

Start by opening the MP3 in Audacity.
Then Clip it down to 30 seconds or less.
Then Quick Mix it.
Then Split the audio channels.
Then delete Right channel.
Then change it to MONO. (BY IT I MEAN THE REMAINING LEFT CHANEL)
Here's the part that makes no sense. Why are you telling people to change it from 44100 to 16000? Is that your idea of a sick joke? It took me like 30 minutes to do my first one because whenever I dropped down to 16000 it slowed down my tune to a satanic sounding soundtrack!!! Why is that even in your instructions? Everyone else, ignore that step. DO NOT CHANGE THE PROJECT RATE!!!
Now you export your project as an MP3 (have to have Lame).
I've sent MP3's to my 6100 as high as 334KB and I did not change it to MID. The phone converted it to a usable QCP (I think that's the extension) and I have it as my ring tone.
The only thing you have to really play around with is the VOLUME before you make an MP3 out of it or it will sound horrible.

Please let me know if any of you are having problems with this process at all. I'm making ringtones out of just about everything now

Posted by: a1drewski

your changing the wrong rate. change the project rate at the bottom left of the screen to 16000.

Posted by: a1drewski

if you are using a data cable and bit pim 0.7.29, you dont have to change the file extension at all

Posted by: 3dmac

BITTER !!
If You can read and do as instructed! , You were told to IMPORT THE SONG THEN CHANGE THE PROGECT RATE TO 16000, THEN DO A QUICK MIX !!!

I Did not say to do it at the end, or after the mix. THIS WILL MAKE IT PLAY BACK AT A SLOWWW SPEED.
Everyone else seems to get it !.

Also , the file sizes you are making I can get 3 30sec mp3's on the phone .

unfortunately...i got 262 kb for 16 seconds.....
i think i did all right...
i changed project rate..., quick mix, split, delete right, change into mono, make this 16 seconds, and saved...
but i got 262 kb.....

Posted by: 3dmac

lentm:
Did you set the project rate to 16000hz ?
If set above this , you will get a larger file size. For 16sec. this soumds like it set at 22050hz.
You can PM me with a 30 sec clip and I can reduce it. Also you can send me your saved ringer and I can look at it.

To all members of this thread-
For 3dmac's sake if anyone is having problems getting the file size right in their ringers and can't figure it out they can send me their ringtone file and I can see what they are doing wrong and help you out.
E-mail-sparticusi@hotmail.com

*Note only do this as a last resort if you absoulutely cannot figure out how to do it*

Thanks J_R_S

I've helped several people with their tones. My largest 30sec ringer is only
136k. I've done a 40sec for a guy @ 185k.
I'm always around here to help !!

I started playing around with Audacity today and had the same problem others have had with large export file sizes. Try going into file, preferences, File Formats, and set the MP3 Export Setup bitrate to 32 instead of the default 128

Posted by: 3dmac

As I stated in the instructions that the samples need to be set at 32bit @16000hz rate. This will give the smallest file at a good quality for the size and out put capabilites of the phones speaker. By the way, this is the same format of GIN ringers from Sony Moble Music that I based my howto on.

1. Go to http://www.walmart.com/
2. Hit the Music tab
3. Now it's up to you. Choose whatever you want. The great thing here is that all of these MP3s are all under 30 seconds long and under 300kb by default. They must be under 300kbs
4. Right click and "Save Link As" (I use firefox)
5. That's all you have to do to get tones
6. Open up Contol Panel
7. Open up Folder Options
8. Click the View tab
9. Uncheck "Hide Extensions For Known File Types"
10. Click File Types tab
11. Scroll down until you find the MP3 extension
12. Once you find it, click on the Advanced tab
13. Uncheck "Always Show Extension"
14. Click OK and then click Close
15. Now, once you've saved your files, all you have to do is email them to yourself via you mobile account. If you are with Verizon then it's (000-000-0000@vzwpix.com). The zeros are replaced by your phone # of course.
16. Before you email the file MAKE SURE you Rename your file extension from .mp3 to .mid (50cent.mp3 to 50cent.mid) Even though LG claims the VX8000 cannot play mp3s as ringtones, this method works because all you're doing is renaming the file so the phone will able to read the midi tone.

Make sure before doing any of this, that you're able to recieve text messages. If you can't or don't know if you're able, just activate it through your carrier. And last but not least, this will cost you 25 cents to email to your cell phone. It's better than paying up to 10 dollars for 3 or 4 ring tones. Have fun!

Ok so I'm totally new at this and have just been playing around, when I take a 30 second track and do everything listed I always get around a 100 to 150 KB file, my verizon phone will only allow me to save files of 30 KB or less (it's an LG6100). No ones really clear with the KB and Kb so I don't know if the files i'm making are around the right size or if everything is meaning 150Kb, not 150KB. I'm using some website to upload my songs, so i'm curious also if I use the verizon deal that i then could save files larger that 30KB

Posted by: 3dmac

MasterSun, the file sizes are ok. Kb=kilobyte (1000bytes)
Using a website is not the best, they limit file load size. Also I believe the 6100's ringer limit is 30kb which you would need to reduce the ringers to about 16 seconds.
It would be best to load them wit bitpim and a data cable !

The 6100 can store mp3s larger than 30kb if you use the data cable

actually I have sent myslef mp3 files at least 150KB or more through email and it saves fine.

i have 8000 and it cant save music thats bigger than 30kb

Well after 2 1/2 of work on this, i finally converted a m4p to a m4a to an mp3 and now into a nifty little 30 second ring thats about 230k. now it seems like the hard part is done ehh? well after all that work, my cell phone doesn't like it! My cell phone is an LGvx6100. Im e-mailing it to my phone as opposed to using a cable. I have e-mailed many other rings before and they have worked fine. The pix message gets there fine, and it saves fine as well. Then when i try to open it, it says "unable to open pix message" or a message to that extent. I created my file just like everyone has said to create it, and i only have one other ring on my phone, one thats about 130k. Does anyone know why my phone won't accept it? Thank you very much.

1) First off how do you delete the right track after you split stero track?

2) If I convert that to 16,000 it changes the speed and length of the wav how to I fix it so I can convert it to 16,000 without changing the original wave.

3) For some reason after I set to MONO I still see the bottom or right track. No wave in it but its there. SO How do I remove it so when I open it in Audicity I don't see that second mix track.

Lets start at step 1:
Import the song and edit to the sample you want by deleting(cutting out) the parts you don't want. ( 30 sec is good)
Step 2:
Set the project rate to 16000 HZ and go under "Progect" and select "QuickMix", this will blend the 2 channels together.
Step 3:
select "Split Tracks" under the tracks name block \/. This will open the right channel. Now I've found that on some songs, the right has more detail and should be used for the ringer.
Step 4:
Delete the channel not needed by clicking the "X" box. Then select "MONO" under the track name box. \/
Step 5:
The file is now ready to save and you are done !!
Mistake is setting the progect rate (16000 hz) before importing. This will only expand the file which SLOWSSSS it down when played..

Have fun

Thanks that very helpfull. Not many people like yourself that are willing to help other people in this world. SOmeone like you will make it big!!

For some reason the Project Rate choice for 16,000 at the lower left is greyed out. I must have made some changes in the preferences menu. I iwll try and reset that to see if that helps if not can I go up frequency higher? Will it still play on the VX8000?

Also do I need to rename the MP3 to MID or will QUalcomm QPST take care of the extention and just leave it as *.mp3?

THanks again

Posted by: emunity

For some reason the Project rate at 16,000 is unavailable. I must have screwed with some settings in the preferences!!

Is 22,500 ok to use? or just a waist of space?

Posted by: emunity

I uninstalled it then removed the audicity directory and after re-installing it it still shows 16,000 greyed out. I can set it in the preferences default frequency to 16,000 then after I re-start audicity it shows 16,000 in the project rate lower left but as soon as I import the Audio it changes and the 16000 choice is greyed out again.

SO what is wrong here?

Posted by: emunity

1) Well the way I got it to work is to set 16,000 in the preferences menu. Then import the Audio MP3 or Wav. THen cut the part I want to kep then GO NEW and at that point the New Project is set at 16,000.

THe rest is history.

2) One more real important Question. DO I have to delete the SOund.dat file evertime I delete a sound file or add a sound file using the QPST explorer?

THank again

Posted by: 3dmac

22050 hz is ok. The brew dloadringerindex.dat file is the file accosiated with ringers. This needs to be deleted and the phone rebooted in order for them to show in the ringerf list and in your sounds/music folder. Default pref. should be set at 44100hz/32bit.
3dmac

Posted by: emunity

CAn't find that file anywhere in the tree, NO WHERE? "dloadringerindex.dat "

Only the sound.dat file under/dload. ANd according to JTPRO his FAQ's say to delete the sound.dat file:

Here is part of the step by step:

To add ringtones to the phone:

1. Connect your data cable to the vx8000 (at the time of this writing, the
vx6000 and vx7000 futuredial cables at radio shack worked).
2. load up QPST, in particular the EFS Explorer.
3. BACKUP and delete /dload/sound.dat
4. place .mp3 or .mid files into either of the following directories:
/dload/snd/
/user/sound/ringer/ (you can create this folder if it doesn't exist)
5. reset the phone, the tones will be displayed in the ringtone section.
*Supplied by JTPRO

I see sounds both in /user/sound/ringer and /dload/snd

So which Dir do I upload the ringtones to, for the /dload/snd dir or the /user/sound/ringer?

Not sure if it matters? WHy do they have 2 dir for ringtones or music?

DOes that FAQ supplied by JTPRO make sense or not?

THanks so much for replying!

Posted by: 3dmac

This is whats on my VX4500 and 3200
download/dloadindex/
brewRingerIndex.map
brewImageIndex.map
But since the 8000 can store and play MP3 music, the file you should looks to be the correct one.
For ringers, put the in your user/sound/ringer folder.
The other is for mp3's music which is handled a little diff. than ringers.
Also only the ringers in the users folder will show up in the sounds/ringers list on the phone.

I had to "Split Channels", from the same pulldown that lets you change sample rate. Once that was done I could operate on one channel at a time. HTH.

If you would like to know how to use Ringtones off the SD disk for the VX8100 I have just made step by step instructions at the following link:
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...50&page=4&pp=15

I have been able to use 27 mp3's (55MB) off my SD disk as ringtones and I could probably put on another 400MB since I have a 512MB SD Disk but 27 is more than enough for me since I now have 3 ringtones that I can't even decide who to assign them to!
As of today the VX8100 totally kicks the E815's butt!

Okay, guys i absolutely CANNOT get this to work for me. I followed everyone's directions down to the tee. I open the track, trim it to 30 seconds, do a quick mix, split the tracks, delete the right one, change the project rate to 22050, and export as MP3 at the right birate. Once its saved, i change the filetype to .mid and send it to myself via email. EVERY SINGLE TIME i try ANY TRACK i get "MESSAGE RECEIEPT FAILED"

what the crap!??!? im so fcking frustrated GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR :hurt:

Posted by: 3dmac

People !!
PLease save your selves alot of headaches by reading before doing.
You need to change the rate before you do the QUICK MIX. Not at the end.
The Mix function will adjust the sample rate to the current setting.

If you do it at the end, YOU WILL GET A SLOOOWWWWED DOWN RINGER!

When I import files into Audacity, all I get is white noise. How do I get actual music? I've tried importing mp3 and midi using the raw data format, but I can't get anything to work.

Posted by: 3dmac

First , you are not importing. You are just opening a new or existing file. Importing is for projects allready started and saved in un-formated form. So go under "FILE"/open and then choose the mp3 to load.
3dmac

Posted by: mwbsmn

I've tried the file/open method and I get the following error message:

"Audacity did not recognize the type of this file. If it is uncompressed, try importing it using 'Import Raw' ".

Posted by: brunymc

yeah, that's what happened to mine..only two were saved....i wouldnt let any others go through...ow do you make them smaller withouth losing the quality?!?!?...
underground man, how did you delete the polyphonic ones? I cant seem to figure that out on my 8100????

Posted by: 3dmac

Midi files will only play and can't be edited by audacity. And as for as the music files you are trying to load, if audacity doesn't recognize the file type then it is a bad file !! Were are you getting these files ?
You can load directly off a cd and audio dvd. The standard audio files are ".mp3, .wav(windows audio), and .au ( cd audio)".
3dmac

Posted by: obso

first off thanks for the tutorial i couldnt figure out for the life of me how to do it.

now ive got it down for the most part but whenever i transfer them over to my phone (moto v262 cdma) i can see them in the media list but they wont play. it just displays the song title and says stopped. if you hit play it just blinks and goes back to stopped. even happens with the halo mp3 you posted earlier in the thread. is this an easy fix of does my phone just have rabies?

Posted by: 3dmac

Change the files extension to ".mid" before you load it to the phone. Cdma phones use Qualcom's purevoice chip set which will play mp3s, but are finiky about the file extension (as are Most LG's) unless the phones docs say it will play mp3 files.

Posted by: obso

done that, if i leave them as mp3's it says its corrupt

Is it necessary to make the ringtone mono on the VX8100 with the stereo headphones?

The 6100 has a file size restriction of 30k. Not sure why but it does. Have you tried adding the ringer from the File Sys. Tab / Directory ?
Add to the user/ sound/ ringer/ folder.
Then delete the brewringerindwx.map file in the Downlaod/dloadindex/
And reboot.

ricko,
how are you trying to get them into the phone and how big are the files when you are finished with them? I have a 6100 and I use bitpim. My files range in size, but using bitpim I can upload them larger than 300kb.

Posted by: ricko836

i dont have bitpim i just send them via text msg
there on my phone and they play i just cant save it
one is 149kb and the other is 235 kb

Posted by: a1drewski

the only way you are going to get them to save is with a data cable. when you send them via email or pix messages they have to be less than 30kb to save.

Audacity won't open the files directly off of a CD.. I get the following msg when trying to do so :

F:\track_blabla.cda is an audio cd file
Audacity does not open this type of file
Try ripping it to a native audio format that Audacity can import

hmm... Now, your instructions were great and I'm able to make, save, import and assign the MP3s on my HD to my 9800 and use'em as ringtones Thanks a lot!!

But, I'm stuck with not being able to use the songs on my CDs ... I ripped'em using WM Player.. and I'm trying to change the extension to MP3 via DOS [ Start - Run - CMD ] .. but what default format does WM Player rip CDs to?.. I tried .AU .WAV .CDA ... no dice!

Rahul

Posted by: 3dmac

Hi Rahul,
Here is what .cda is and is not :
CDA (CD Audio Track)

CD Audio (.cda) tracks are audio files that are stored on CD media. You can play .cda files only from a CD-ROM. To test a .cda file, either try to play a different .cda file from your CD-ROM or try to play a .cda file from a different CD-ROM. The .cda files are representations of CD audio tracks and do not contain the actual pulse code modulation (PCM) information. You cannot play the file if you copy a .cda file from the CD-ROM to your hard disk.

The current standard for CD audio requires a sampling rate of 44.1 kHz and a sample size of 16 bits (2 bytes per sample). As a result, you need to store 2 x 44,100= 88,200 bytes of data every second to record in mono. Recording in stereo would require twice that much storage. That extrapolates to about 10 MB of data for every minute of stereo sound! It is for this reason that compression schemes such as MP3 are so important.

Posted by: 3dmac

The files that you burned are not as noted above, actual audio files. Thats why Audacity can't use them. You need to use the original music files (best) or use a converter to make them into .mp3 or .au file.
Do a google search for "audio formats cda " and a lot of .cda to mp3s will pop up. But this will degrade the overall sound quality.
Use the oe music !
iTunes for windows works the best !!

I've had trouble hearing mp3 ringtones as well. I was wondering if it would help to insert an mp3 file of a more distinguishable ringer sound before the mp3 music ringtone started to get your attention. Has anyone tried this? Some would say it defeats the purpose...

In Windows XP your full file name, including the extension (the three-letter part to the right of the period in the file name) may not show when you look at file list. You can fix this by going to My Computer and then the Tools menu at the top. Select Folder Options and View and uncheck the box that says "Hide extensions for known file types". When you do this a file that previously appeared as something like "songname" will now appear as "songname.mp3". You can then right click on that file and select rename and change the "mp3" to "mid". You don't have to actually convert the file in any way.

Good luck!

I've made a ringtone, my next question is, is there anyway I can send them to my phone via the internet.
I've tried uploading it as .mp3 and .mid to my webspace and viewing the page in my phone but it doesn't work, how do I go about forcing my phone to download the file. (Header for example?).
Or, how would I email it to my phone as so many of you have talked about.
My phone is a LG 3300
Thank you,

There has to be a way to do it via php. Look at pix2fone.com, they do it for images and ringtones and my phone downloads them. The only problem is that they only support .mp3, which my phone does not support(It still downloads it, it just won't play it). I'm guessing they're setting a header of some sort using php that tells the phone to initialize a download.

All,

I have read through all the posts and followed the instructions as closely as possible. I have tried things multiple times. For the life of me I can not get a file that is much less than 260kb, and that will play on my VX-7000! I just have no idea wtf I am doing wrong. I'm using the latest version of Audicity and Lame. Does anyone have any ideas? Anything I might try different? I followed these steps:

1. Import mp3, pick clip, trim
2. Switch to 16000khz, quickmix
3. split tracks
4. delete left channel
5. Make channel that is still available into mono
6. Export as mp3 (64)
7. change file ext to .mid
8. upload to phone via bitpim and cable
9. try to play, no sound.

First when you save the file as MP3, it need s to be 32bit NOT 64bit. A 64 bit file is more info than the sound decoder chip in the phone can handle. Therefore it won't play. I posted 32 bit 16000htz mono !
I can make ANY CD/music file to a ringer within a few min. And all are within 187K for 30sec. !!!

On my VX4500 (via Verizon), I just use bitpim to transfer the mp3 files (I use 32k 16-bit mono MP3s). No need to rename them to .mid. I did notice that many Brew Apps for VZW name those mp3 ringtones .MID.

I've tried sending them to my <phonenumber>@vzwpix.com address, but I just end up getting a message directing me to their website on a computer. If I try my vtext.com address, I get an SMS message but I can't display nor save any embedded objects (other than what the phone has built in).

I guess my 4500 doesn't support transfer of files via EMS...

Cap,
The phone actually does, but Verizon kills it at their and so you will have to use GIN $
.Mid keeps things in unison for the phones file sytem.

#1 you are almost doing things right !
a: The ringers are located in the - user/sound/ringer , then you need to DELETE the -download/dloadindex/brewRingerindex.map file. Then reboot the phone and the tones will now be in your menu 6/2 (music)

Using BitPim 0.7.25 with my Verizon LG VX 4650. Have BitPim set for an LG 4600 siince my 4650 is not supported.
When I uploaded a ringer file to my phone, according to the BitPim Filesystem tab, the file ended up creating a new subdirectory, usr-ringtone-chuck-desc-body (chuck is the name of the file). My 4650 phone cannot find the file.

1. How do I move this ringtone file into the correct subdirectory? There is also a user-sound-ringer subdirectory that I think is the correct location.

2. How do I specify where in the 4650's file system that I want to send a new ringtone file?

Thanks for all the help!

First thing. You needed to do things manually not from bitpims add+ file button. Since your phone is not fully supported, bitpim won't do things correctly !!
You need to RIGHT CLICK to delete and right click to add the ringer in the user/sound/ringer folder as noted.

ok this is probably dumb but, in Audacity. im good up till the QuickMix i still have 2 channels it looks like, how do i select just the left side? and which one is the left?

i've never used this before. thanks.

i've done all of this ( i think ) and i the file size is like 500k
I did this.
open file
edit to 24 sec clip
change project rate to 16000
i cant find anywhere to select 32 bit mono. it only gives me 32 bit float as an option.
in the project menu i select "quick mix"
then in "MIX" the pull down menu on the track i select "split stereo track"
then in both tracks it has MIX pull-down options;
mono
left channel
right channel
so i select left on the bottom track. doesnt seem to do anything but i continute. select "mono" on that one then delete the top one.
then i "Export as Mp3" and save it to my desktop.

its currently 514k.

what didnt/did i do?

Posted by: 3dmac

The left channel is the top one after you split the tracks. The 32 bit option you usually don't need to worry about since a cd track is written at this rate. Only need to worry about setting 16000 rate before Quickmix. The right channel (bottom) will have more of the bass in it when mixed so if you use this channel (some songs sound fuller here) you need to use the "Equalization" option which will level all frequencies in the track. The phone can't produce bass to well and will destort.
Don't choose the 32bit float option and leave track as is and it should be a lower file size.

this time I
open file, set to 16000, quickmix, split track made top mono, delete bottom. export as mp3. save to desktop.

now its 413k ive set it to 24 bit and added a high pass filter
its still 413k length is close to 24 secs long.

looks like it defaults to 32bit-float

send me the 24 sec. chopped song file so I can try on my end.

I think what gets me mad is the stupid LOW volume on the 9800! I have put songs on the 9800 that I can't even hear.. but yet they play fine on the computer. So.. I break up Audacity... and take the volume to #6.. Okay.. works a little... at least you can hear it.. but still not loud enough.. Redit file to show volume at #9.. put minisd card back in phone.. and the song sounds terrible?? What is the proper or at least.. half way decent way to edit the volume of a low playing song.. One that doesn't muffle the sound/music as you increase the volume?

Posted by: kirksucks

i got it now, you have to change the exprot bitrate. dur
thanks!

now i need an mp3 of Raining blood by Slayer.. of course Walmart doesnt carry it.. but they carry horror movies and shake your bootie milkshake CDs.

lame

Posted by: 3dmac

Cell,
Being that the V is an mp3 player, loading songs off of a cd directly is the way. Of coarse you knew that. But did you set the volume and EQ settings for the MP3 section so you can hear the songs through the speakers ? It is really designed for headphones usage.
As far as increasing volume, it can only be set no more than +6db without major distortion period !

I found that it is easy to make the tracks in Audacity and email them to my phone even if the file size is like 100-150kbs. The problem I see is that the sound sucks when played on the phone. Is the sound better if you use a USB cable and upload a song using one of the software programs like BitPim or whatever? I have a LG VX7000 and all the songs I emailed to my phone for ringtones were like 30 seconds long but sounded pretty bad. I have fiddled with the db level and output volume so there is no crackling or distortion sound, its just got a lot of white noise in the background and its not very clear or articulate when played. Is this just because my vx7000 is a little older or will the quality improve when I get my USB and start transferring that way? Thanks for any help.

Posted by: c00kied0g

Sorry If this is a dumb question.....

I tried to follow your instructions and :
Quickmix is grayed out?
When I change my rate from 44000 to 16000 - it sounds Horrible - SLOW.

What am I missing - I've never messed w/ an audio editor so I'm new to it - sorry.

thanks.

Posted by: 3dmac

Emailing ringtones is the problem. It gets trashed on their end !
By loading via bitpim you will get full quality.
Just make sure you get a FUTUREDIAL CABLE and not an Ebay lets go CHEAP one !!

3dmac

Posted by: 3dmac

Cookie,
You need to set to 16000 then select quickmix. It will then convert the current work to this new speed. You are just changing the current playback rate and not changing the actual file.

3dmac

Posted by: senseiosin

Got the cable today and it works pretty damn well, sound is much improved over the email version. Also I got a cheap cable from ebay, sound probably could improve incrementally with a better USB cord but its still decent. Thanks to this forum and all those who have posted advice, great tutorial at http://detn8r.pluslite.com/vx7k/tut.html that walked this newb through the process.

Posted by: c00kied0g

Thank you 3dmac for replying - appreciate it.

I read the quickmix part of instructions, but it is grey so I can't get to it.
why? any idea? (feel like a dummy here)

anyway, the help in audacity says that you can also save the file and that is same as doing quickmix. If this is true, do I just exit the sw and then re-open - will it then play the changed file and not just adjust playback.

sorry if this is posted somewhere - if so, maybe u can post link.
like i said, i'm new to the editing part -

thx again for all ur help.

ok i got all this but two things, first how come its soooo slow when i play back? second i dont know how to tell homw long it is?

OK!.... Here's another question. can this work for motorola mpx 220 ?

can someone please spell this is simple english... say, step by step on how you do it. i just downloaded audacity. what is lame ? i read something about lame. do we have to download this? and where do we get this ?

can someone please take the time to do a step by step explanation ? would really appreciate the help.

Posted by: 3dmac

Dodge, It's playing slow because just changing the sample rate to 16000 will read the file slooower. As I've listed over and over, Set the rate THEN do a QuickMix which resamples the file down. And the time is listed above sample.

Lillygirl, LameLib is a data file that a lot of diff. programs can use as an optional extension. You can download it from the Audacity site, it in the extentions or addons links. For making the ringers just follow my Howto. TO load onto the phone you will need to ask someone on HOWARDS Moto forum.

where can I find a free converter?? I need to change my wma's and itunes files into mp3's....

Posted by: 3dmac

No legal program to do this, since WMA and iTunes AAC are propriatary encriptions(for copyright reasons) you can burn them to a cd and then import those into audacity. On my MAC I use WiretapPro which will record in AAC and MP3 formats directly from a song played in iTunes so I don't need to burn a cd. I used this also to load all my Vinyl into iTunes.

but who wants to burn 'em on to a CD?? It would be easier if I had a converter...........free trials only last but so long and I need one that I can keep.

I can't import a song as raw data,it just sounds like white noise. The wma files are not corrupted. What am I doing wrong?

Posted by: 3dmac

randcool: read my post 2 above yours. This will explain. Raw data is just that, but WMA is an encriptioned format not raw sound data. Therefore it will sound like noise.

3dmac-I saw your post before I wrote but I am positive that I have brought wma's in as raw data before and exported as mp3.If I can't do this with Audacity then why would I need it.Once you have the mp3 your good to go right.I downloaded Goldwave and it performed as audacity used to and I converted to mp3 and uploaded to phone.I have accomplished what I wanted but I an curious as to what is wrong? Thanks for your answer, any other ideas?

With my card reader, I created a new folder named Ringtones on the miniSD and place my custom ringtones there. When the miniSD is replaced in the phone, my custom ringtones show with GOLD icons as contrasted to the GREEN icons for the stock, standard ringtones.

Posted by: Dengin

So the folder name is just 'Ringtones' you say? Tried it, but can't see the mp3 files I put in it once I put the SDCard back in the phone. I do have some other gold-icon mp3 ringtones that I put there using Bitpim. But you're saying you can do this just by creating that folder on the SDCard?

Posted by: Scottfab

When I tried to load ringtones on my phone version 7, it didnt work. Then again, someone told me to use the folder name Ringers, not Ringtones. And someone else said you need to create a custom dat file to make it work.

thanks for a great thread!!!

anyway, after a few hours of trial & error i finally figured out why the file size was coming out at 300-500kb instead of 70kb... several factors can cause this:

1. when finished with a old project or sample and ready to start from scratch, close the old project box & open a new project box before you import a new mp3 file or you may have old settings enabled (like too high or low hz or bit rate etc.) which changes up the newly imported or opened mp3 file, i forgot to do this and it just kept compounding the problem.

2. if your 16000 selection was greyed like mine, just scroll down & click on "other" and type in 16000 this worked fine.

3. change export rate to 32kb

after following the instructions in this thread & doing what i listed, my 30 sec ring tone went from 356kb down to 70kb and i was able to email it to my phone.. now i just need to figure out how to move it to ringtone since it was saved in sounds under .mid ... should i have saved it in pictures instead? also i emailed a ringtone in the .mp3 format & it converted it to qcelp and saved it to my sounds also.. they both play the 30 second song but they wont transfer to ringtone....any suggestions?? i have a cable & reader on the way and bitpin downloaded but until the reader & cable arrive i have to find another solution..

in the meantime i also put my SD card in my PDA and loaded mp3's on it through the cpu by synching up with activesync & just transferred the card back to my phone loaded with my new mp3's & it works fine playing them. i have version 4 on my 8100.

Ok, I made a ringtone from the song i wanted, but I, like many others am confused about uploading it to my phone (LG 6190)
I've heard from others that I can e-mail it to my phone and download it like that. I tried that last night, saw the attachment, but couldn't download it. Is this because of the file type? Was i supposed to send it to my phone as a .mid file and not a .mp3 file?

Posted by: Goatweed

just to add a different option to this thread, I used audacity to cut 30 seconds of a song that I wanted to use as a ringer, then I converted this clip in dbpoweramp to mono, 32 bit 16000, then I changed the mp3 extension to mid, opened pitpim & added it to ringers - worked like a charm. Audacity kept outpuuting to mp3 at 128 for some reason, thats why I went with dbpamp for the conversion post-clipping.

Posted by: 3dmac

You Need to reset the MP3 Export rate back to 32. It's in prefs/file format. It can be set from 16bit to 320 bit.

Would this process be neccesary for me? I just bought an LG500 which is an MP3 phone. It came with software to add my own tones but the help diagram had music file in a .mmf format as opposed to a nice mp3. I do have audacity and enjoy it and was planning on using it to cut some parts of songs anyway, but would I have to use this process? Or would I have to do it another way?

why would you use such a low encode? i was using 96kbps/44khz and I could clearly hear a difference on my previous vx8100 when compared to 128kbps/44khz..

if space is that much of an issue, get a card.. but i had 15 songs around 500kb each on my phone with no problems.. and they all played loud and proud.

Rowdyrob,
Yes increase the volume using the slide bar on the left of the track. To repeat, you will need to splice in multiple times.

Ringtones must be put on the phones memory, you cant use the tones on the card as ringtones.

The ringers are treated diff. then the mp3's and are played through a diff part of the phone (mp3 req stereo and high sample rate for cd quality)
You may need to just increase the ringers db. OPen in audacity and up the db (volume) off the sample. Then resave to mp3 format aND LOAD BACK TO THE PHONE.
Trial and error.

Well, I actually found out my problem. I had been changing the Project Rate in the "Mix" pull down menu, when I should have noticed (as you all had mentioned) that there was a little box in the lower left corner of the program that I should have been using. Doing the steps that way made it work--not sure why it wouldn't work by using the "Mix" pull down menu. But thanks a lot for the helpful advice!

Posted by: LusciousSquiggy

3dmac, I've been putting ringtones on my phone for a while @16khz and 64kbps. I've always had a bit of a problem with distortion so I tried messing with different settings. I've found that if I use 44.1 khz as my output sampling frequency and keep the bit rate at 64k, my ringtones sound totally totally superior in clarity and range and lack distortion compared to the 16 khz rate... and the file size is EXACTLY the same! So I'm wondering why you're telling people to go with a lower sampling rate if a higher one sounds much better and doesn't take up any more space. Doesn't make sense to me, but I could be missing something. Try increasing your sampling rate and you tell me if your file size increases.

Posted by: 3dmac

Cd quality is 32bit @ 44,100hz. If you are saving you 44.1khz at bit rate of 64 (not 64k), your file sizes will be 4 times larger(due to 4 times more sampled data to store), than at standard 32bit @ 16,000 or 220,500hz files at 30 SECONDS. I have been doing this for over 2 years without distortion (if you are having this happen, then you need to reduce the volume by -3db at minimum)
The speaker on a cell is not designed for hi-fi output !
Also, most phones ( other than an mp3 player type or thew newer verizon evdo c-vast phones) are not designed with alot of memory (ave 2meg to 8 meg).
So small 30 second ringers @ 120-180k is what you will get at 16khz @ 32bit sample. This rate is what most all downloaded real audio ringers are sampled at.

3dmac

Posted by: LusciousSquiggy

My man, I'm glad you've been doing this for 2 years but it's kbit/s not bit/s. Audacity gives you the choice of bit rate, but it's a bit rate of _____ kbit/s. My Exact Audio Copy software states it as kbit/s and so does RazorLame. RazorLame, EAC, and Audacity all preform best encoding with LAME. I use it in all three. My bit rate is 64 kbit/s and my output sampling frequency is set at 44.1 khz. My average file size is ~ 232 kb. That is the EXACT SAME SIZE they were when I used to use 64 kbit/s and 16 khz as my sampling frequency. Only now my ringtones sound much better. Why don't you try encoding with a higher frequency and tell us what you find. You'll find your file size stays exactly the same. Bit rate increases file size...frequency does not.

BTW, the distortion I'm experiencing with my VX8500 is due to a build issue not a speaker issue. I only said distortion because it was easier than explaining the problem. Basicly increasing the frequency reduced the buzz that was comming from the plastic that covers the speaker. Don't ask me how.

I want to say sorry if the first sentence of my last post sounded cocky. I did not mean to come off that way and it's too late for me to edit now. I also want to say that I appreciate your contributions to this site, 3dmac. You've helped out many people. I, as well, am just trying to post something that I think will help people out. I've found out that a higher sampling frequency works better for me. It doesn't have to be 41000 hz, but I've found the higher frequencies do sound better and just want to pass it along.

peace

Posted by: 3dmac

No probs,
I just need to say for all,
That the higher the bit sample ie 32 or 64 means more data is stored per cycle. in this case either a 32bit (or 4 byte word) or 64bit (or an 8 byte word) would be stored. Thus also the higher the sample freq. is ie. 16,000hz, 22,050hz 44,100hz, the more cycles are stored in any give time. More data per cycle = better fidelity( more info per sound recorded).
And most of theses phones (none mp3 player types) speakers are not designed for good quality music sounds in the range of an mp3 ringer. Thats why the come with midi ringtones. far less space and in the range the speaker works best in.

I just don't understand why this isn't working for me! I got the music in Mp3 format, transfered in into Audacity, fallowed the 1st post and it plays so slow that it makes it sound retarted! It is playing at such a slow rate that you cannot even hear the music. It just sounds like garbage until you turn the project rate up. I don't understand?

Two important tips for using Audicity.

After importing the mp3 that you are going to cut down to the ringtone:

At lower left corner change "Project Rate" to 16000 or something close.

And, very important (took me a while to find this) , in Edit, Preferences, File Formats under Mp3 change bitrate to 32.

Those changes will swink the outputed mp3 down to a size of 200kb or less for 30 seconds.

About the only other step in Audicity is using Quick Mix or Stereo to Mono to get a single channel mix. And I usually use the Effect - Amplify and do a 6 to 10db up. But there are other more detailed walkthrus for Audicity here.

Why? Why? Why? Why?

I've got a VX8500 and I recommend the following for those with phones that have external speakers equal to or greater than that of the 8500, for that is all that I have experience with.

Why lower the project rate (output sampling frequency) to 16khz?

People...please try 16000, 24000, 32000, and 44100 and then tell us how they compare. I bet you'll find the higher the sampling frequency the better the sound!

Then take a look at the file size and you'll see they're the same size!

Look people, my ringtones are 64 kbit/s @ 44.1 khz and 29 seconds or less and the largest one is 234 kb, OK? And it sounds 4X better than 32 kbit/s and 16 khz! Test it and compare and then post your findings on this thread so I'm not the only one raving about this and looking like a lunatic.

I always use 64 kbit/s as my output rate because I deem I can afford it. I mean, I can still store more ringtones than I know what to do with and they sound much better than 32 kbit/s tones. But no matter what bit rate your using, try using a higher sampling frequency and observe the superior sound without increasing the file size!

Try different settings and find what works best for you. A good starting point would be to try encoding at 32 kbit/s and 16 khz like others are recommending... and then compare it to an encoding of the same file but at 64 kbit/s and 44.1 khz. Then post your results.

I have never had a problem sending pix messages to any phone i have had with verizon but today I got an lg vx8300 and do not receive any pix messages. What's up with that?

I am doing my own research on what squig is saying and I'm coming up with some strange results. I will use a couple of other programs I have other than audacity to verfiy my findings when I have time. I'm not sure audacity is rendering exactly what I'm telling it to. My other programs are high end and will give me exact results. Plus it's late and I'm tired heh heh. Maybe I'm missing a setting. Plus I'm using Audacity 1.2.4b which may be buggy.

i'm having no problem making the ring tones but how do you get them in your ring tone section with the mini sd?

Ok, Squig is wrong about the file size. And correct about the sound quality.

In Audacity, if you go into Edit / Preferences / File Formats
Under MP3 Export Setup change the Bit Rate, it will change the file size.

The lower the bit rate the smaller the file size. The frequency doesn't change the file size at all. But, has an effect on the sound quality. The lower the bit rate, the less dynamic the sound, it can get a bit twangy or AM radio sounding.

26 second mp3 at 128Kbps is 407KB (which is about right for a 64Kbps at around 234KB)
26 second mp3 at 32Kbps is 102KB

If you ahve the memory and don't have a need for a ton of ring tones, you can probably get away with a higher bit rate. But I would be careful about filling your memory with large file size ring tones.

If you are going to use a high bit rate, use 10 to 15 second ring tones.
Lower the bit rate for longer tones.

I have confirmed this using Audacity, Cubase and BeSweet to change the bit rates and/or resample (which can be fixed, but it's difficult, there are easier ways than resampling). Like recording at the bit rate you want to use as final product. I'm no expert in this, these are just my findings.
