Can't be done.

email it to yourself by setting up an account at vzwpix.com, then email from yahoo or hotmail to yourtendigitnumber@vzwpix.com I think it's still only 25 cents per file and only one file at a time. I did this yesterday to get a ring tone I made for my 8900 onto my new vx8300. (a part of the beginning of Primus Southbound Pachyderm, which needs to be re-edited to sound better on the 8300 )

(EDIT: I was wrong. According to BitPim you can, but you need a data cable I believe and BitPim,,, http://www.bitpim.org ,,,, the answer you want is in the help file in BitPim under How To's for the vx8300.)

Posted by: Tepid

Just found that BitPim also has an Audio converter in 9.07. Appears to be quite decent also. I have confirmed there as well that the whole Bit Rate does effect File size. And it will convert Wav to MP3. My install only shows support for MP3 not sure how to make it support others.

It just dawned on me that I already know that bit rates effect file size. it's been a while since I have messed with video/audio.

From BitPim's Help files..... Hope it is ok to post here. This is good info that I haven't really thought about or seen posted here. Also, my version BitPim 9.07 shows MP3 as the converter not QCP, so I am not sure of the real difference. File sizes should be the same I think.

Be very careful with file sizes. We have no way of knowing how much free space is on the phone file, and the phone may become inoperable if it runs out of space. (They usually at least hang and have to be rebooted.)

You are recommended to use 16,000 or 22,050 as the sample rate.
(Note: QCP doesn't have any choices for sample rate.) You should use the lower sample rates. The phone may not even play the higher rates since it requires altering speaker levels more times per second.

You are recommended to keep the size below 64kb (65,536 bytes)
(Note: QCP doesn't have any choices for bitrate.) You should use the lower bitrates. The phone may not even play the higher rates since it requires processing more data per second. Lower bitrates also result in smaller file sizes.

You are recommended to use 32 kbits per second.
There is no point having the length longer than 30 seconds since the call will go to voicemail before then. The phone will loop shorter clips.

A 16 second clip at 32 kbits/second will result in a file size of 64kb.

Sections in bold above are reversed in the BitPim help files. They are corrected here.

Posted by: johnny_swindle

I have looked through this thread and I about to come to the conclusion that it can't be done.

I am I correct?

THANK YOU! I just wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who posted in here about the ringtones. I am a phone retard and this has been great. I wish I had some knowledge of my own to share. Thank you again.

Tepid, thanks for looking into this issue and posting your results. You've just sort-of confirmed everything I have been saying. Your post had an inaccuracy though. You said:

Your are wrong about me being wrong about the file size. I never said that adjusting the Output Rate (Bit Rate) would keep the file size the same. I've always said and implied that raising the Output Rate will increase file size. Output Rate is not the same as Project Rate. The issue I was trying to address is the seemingly accepted idea that increasing the Project Rate (Output Sampling Frequency) increases file size. It does not. Please read posts carefully before stating that someone has made a false claim. Go back and reread my posts and you'll see that I've always used 64kbs as my Output Rate (Bit Rate) and I was only comparing the file size of files @ 64kbs and 16khz with those @64kbs and 44.1khz. I do, however, appreciate you looking into the issue and posting your findings.

Hi everyone.
I would like to add that I started this thread over 2 yrs ago, when most phones had about 2 meg of memory and no mp3 or video capabilities. Now we have mp3 and H.264 Video ( which covers my Chocolate ), so the playing field has gotten alot bigger. So remember this is just a guide.
I now just clip my mp3s to 30 sec. and load them direct with no needed coversion. Also War of the Worlds in mp4/ACC play and sound fantastic !!!
And with a 1 gig card, I have room for 20 + more movies . :-)

Posted by: xmguy

With the 6100, 9800, 8300 you can use BitPim to upload the ringtone in MP3 format.

Posted by: stuckonthis

you could do it the ghetto way..if u have windows...go to Start->All programs->accessories->entertainment-> sound recorder then open and find your file and open it. then go to save as and name ur file ____.mp3 and it will work as simple as that...and that should work with midi sequence and other file types

Posted by: shermanleesm

I just got a LG240
When i connect my phone to my pc using the cable,
it only shows mp3, pictures and video folders.
Where should i put my ringtones if i want to have my own?

Posted by: bodkerlo

I am so confused now. I have read so much and it's really not telling me anything and when I think I know it, I actually have just gotten more confused.

I have a Kyocera Slider Remix Bluetooth phone and would like to make a ringtone. It has a program called Mobile Phone Tools. It also has a USB cable. The program will not let me go in with a MP3 file and cut it and make a ringtone. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong? Does anyone know about this? Does anyone know how I can convert MP3 to .mid format with a free program? Please give me step by step instructions. Thanks ahead for the help!!

Posted by: JohnnyDandolla

to the OP: are you allowed to go back and edit your initial post, or does hofo not allow you to do so?

Posted by: cognitive77

Why is it some songs don't open all the way in Audacity? Seems to not import/open the entire song.

Posted by: 3dmac

What file types are you opening ?
All mp3,wma, and cd audio will open fully.

They're all wma's. It's weird though, most open just fine, but its not random. I try opening the ones that give me problems several times and it does it every single time. Like when it does work, you get the window in Audacity that says its importing the file. But the ones that don't work, that window doesn't come up.

ok, since everyone is talking about ringtones, I figure that I would ask a ?. I have a hollywood 816 which is the same thing as the e815. I know this sounds stupid but I cant figure out for the life of me how to move the ringtones over to my phone, what software do I need. I already know how to make the tones and so forth, i just need to know how to move them over.....please help.

You are now ready to load your new ringtone to your phone.

Posted by: junsho41

So, after reading all these posts...

It IS possible to get ringtones on your LGVX8500 by emailing them to your phone, right? Is it also possible to use bluetooth? Because I can't use a cable.. I have a Mac computer and I heard somewhere that it is not compatible with my computer...

Thank you

Posted by: junsho41

Ok, well. I got my LG VX8500 today and I tried it at the settings you guys suggested.. but it sounds super fuzzy and weird. Any suggestions as to how I can fix this? Thanks.

Posted by: regularjordon

once i transfer the ringtone to the phone through bitpim, i cant find in on the phone. bitpim says its there but i cant find it on my ux355.

Posted by: kleptodathief

does audacity 'amplify' or make the mp3s LOUDER?

Posted by: 3dmac

Yes you can, but don't increase past +6db or you will get distortion.

Posted by: Im_A_Drunk

I need a SIMPLER Walk THRU of Audacity...I am VERY new to this and I am confused already and this thread is WAY too long to sift through and comprehend smh. Can anyone help by replying to this thread directly or by sending me a message on how to? Thanks. I dont understand when the OP Quick Mix. I downloaded Audacity but I cant see where it says QuickMix. and I dont understand anything from Quickmix on. Thanks so much. Happy Holidays.

Posted by: 3dmac

Quick mix is under the project tab. What this does is after you have set the new project rate 16k or 22050hz at the bottom left,it will blend both channels together at the new slower rate. You then set each channel to mono (top tab at left of each wave form were it will say "MIX " and have an x tab next to it to lower the next menu options)
Choose which new sample sounds best and delete the other. Then save as mp3.

Thats it.

Posted by: kleptodathief

i still can't figure out this audicity prog LOL ...i use a program called create-ringtone.com ! it opens the .mp3 file(won't open up a .mid tho) even if i try to rename the file extension! and u hit the amplify 2x button and it creates the louder file!!! simple for me! but its 20usd tho :-(

Posted by: Im_A_Drunk

Does anyone have msn instant messenger? Maybe they can walk me through it that way (USING AUDACITY AND LAME). I am confused becuase there seem to be many ways of using Audacity, some even omiting some changes/steps. Thanks.

Posted by: 3dmac

Whats you handle ! MSN IM ?

Posted by: Im_A_Drunk

I keep trying new things that people have posted to reduce the size of my mp3 after following the steps but it grew from 313kb to 465kbs. HELP ME!!! Thanks and Happy Holidays.

Posted by: Im_A_Drunk

I can send someone two attempts I have made if that will help. Thanks. and thank you 3DMAC for trying to help. I do appreciate more help from you or anyone!!!

Posted by: sivab

I sent the file to my phone and it worked fine.. but how do I delete it later if I don't want it?

edit: Does anyone know where I can download bitpim that supports the LGVX8500, because I can't find it anywhere (the places I have found it at always time out).

If anyone has the download, I'd really appreciate it if they could send it to me

Posted by: sivab

by the way, I'm looking for the Windows download

Posted by: Tank720

Audacity isn't the only music editing software out there for free.

It doesn't open m4a or aac files correctly anyway

Posted by: sam711

I use a LGCU500....
I had a hard time using it too. Then I tried something just for fun. I imported my song I wanted. Then I cut and pasted what I wanted for the ringtone. (About 20 sec) After that, I exported back to my file and saved it on my computer. Then sent it to my sd card. It worked! Now I do use Musicmatch and it automaticly downloads to mp3 and I do not know if that makes a difference or not but it did work for me.
I also use http://www.myxertones.com/. The only problem with this website is that u do not get to pick what part of the song that it makes the ringtone out of.
Good Luck.
sam711

Posted by: sivab

I'm not sure if this has been stated (I skimmed some of these pages), but I was able to turn mp3s into ringtones on my LGVX8500. I'm not sure if other phones support this, but I think music phones can use mp3s as ringtones.

I still want to try on some of my family's phones, to see if they can hear the ringtones if I leave them as mp3s

Posted by: LGisBETTER

I have the LG VX8600 with a 512MB microSD chip. I have the 30sec mp3 clips on my computer, microSD chip, and in the My Sounds folder in my phone. But I cannot make them ringtones from any of these locations. VZWPix doesn't do jack for me because I can't upload the song, whatever format it is in. I would appreciate some help, even though I know all you smarter people are probably so annoyed at these types of questions! Thanks!

Posted by: sax65

when i did this it made the song weird and made it all slow and slurred, how do i fix this?

Posted by: sam711

On the cu500 it will not let u convert mp3 to ringtones unless you shorten them.
I think it is a bit silly but I www.audacity.com works pretty good.

Posted by: javierislame

I just wanted to give a quick shout to 3dmac for this thread. Very quick and easy steps!

Thanks!

Posted by: JunBug

i must be doing something wrong
i changed the format to midi and tried texting the song to myself through verizonwireless but it comes up as invalid format.

Posted by: sivab

Don't know if this helps anyone, but I have an LG VX8500, sent myself a mp3 through Pix message and it gave me the option to use it as a ringtone.

This may be a feature of the mp3 phones, but it might be worth a try.

Also, thanks to 3dmac for posting this very helpful guide to making mp3s into ringtones.

Posted by: adams828

What cable do I need to transfer to vx8600? I would love to use bluetooth, but my computer doesn't have bluetooth (i don't think.. how do i check?). Does BitPM support bluetooth transfer?

Posted by: 3dmac

The cable kit from verizon (Music essentials Kit $29.95) Has the cable (straight usb) and For PC only Windows Media Player 11 so you can load mp3 music.
Bitpim support this straight USB connection and BlueTooth. Only the newest Laptops and some Table top PC's have blue tooth. Otherwise you can get a Bluetooth USB adapter from most computer stores (CompUSA _ iOGear $29.99)
But bluetooth tranfser is slower than the cable connection. But on my MAC it connects better with bitpim.

thanks for the update.. if I just want to load mp3s, am i better off not loading bitpm and just using the music pack cable?

Posted by: 3dmac

Yes, The Syncing and Play lists are easier using WMP 11 on a PC.
3dmac

Posted by: adams828

If I load mp3s onto a microSD card, can i set those to be ringtones? or do they have to be transferred via cable?

Posted by: tbo147

everytime i try getting it in it says that i need to convert it to mp3 but i dont want to, what do i do?

Posted by: 3dmac

you can load them to the card following the direction with bitpim and the cable.

Posted by: ryanm1058123

Anybody have TI - What You Know about that?

Posted by: adams828

So with just the phone and microSD card, no cable, no bluetooth: I can get mp3s on the phone, but not set them as ringtones?

Posted by: 3dmac

That is correct.

Posted by: Goodfella790

I'm still very confused on how to do this process. I get the file rate set, i switch it to mono, i quick mix it, i encode it back to mp3 and the 30 sec file is still like 3 megs and it wont let me apply it to ring tone.

Posted by: Goodfella790

Ok i got it down to about 300 kb but i'm still confused on how to have my chocolate use it as a ringtone

try this... from your email program be it yahoo.mail , hotmail. gmail. send the ringtone to your10digitnumber@vzwpix.com example. I would send my ringtone to 9284075678@vzwpix.com . once you receive the message you should have the option to "save as ringtone"

I'm using an LG AX490 (definitely the black sheep of the LG family, I know) I have managed to transfer songs to it using bluetooth, and it will play them in the ring selection screen, but when I try to select it for my ringtone, it simply selects another, seemingly random, ringtone from the preloaded tones section.

Posted by: soltari

I opened up a 30 second clip in audacity and then changed the project rate to 16000. When i export it as a .mp3 and then change it to a .mid, the project is still about 190kb. When i try to send it to my VX9800, it says file size must be below 350kb. Anyone know why its doing this?

Posted by: soltari

Edit: I dont know why i wrote 9800, I've got a vx5300, sorry.

Posted by: danesh03

That guide is hard to use, anything else easier?

Posted by: danesh03

how do i lower the thing down to 16000?

I too have a LG AX490 and have the same issue. I can transfer my MP3 ringtones to the phone and they play on the phone when I click on them but when I try to set them as a ringtone the phone picks one of its own ringtones.

Anyone have a fix for this?

can someone help? I"m making ringtones for the LG 8300 and occassionally they will come out mp3 quality but then I always get the ones that sound distorted in my speakers. Not only will i get mp3 quality but its not the full 30 secs that trimmed. It would only be like 10 or 15. What am I doing wrong in Audacity? Please help.

Here is the 30 seconds of music I would like someone to turn it into a ring tone and send it back to me with instructions on how to get it on my LG AX 8600 Thanks in advance for the help

My email is SL1771@msn.com

Posted by: SL1771

Looks like I brought a 2 year old thread to a screeching halt... Sorry

Posted by: busybeaver

Is there a limit to how many ringtones you can have?

Can some of the preloaded ones be removed?

I've been able to load 4 tones onto my enV using Audacity and BitPim, but when I made a fifth tone and went to load it, it shows up in BitPim, but not on my phone (even after a power down/up).

Any thoughts? I have approx 25 MB of free memory on the phone, so that is not an issue IMO.

Thanks.

BB

Posted by: 3dmac

Ringtones are stored in system memory. This is not whats available for the mp3 and pics and Flix.

Your ringtone still need to be 30sec mono or stereo. 32bit @ 22k htz.
Make sure the sizes area around 200k or so.

OE ringers are in rom and can't be deleted (sorry !)

Posted by: Tpma4life

IS it normal that when I go: Set Rate> 16000, my audio sounds extremely slow and distorted? Also, I cannot seem to figure out how to only delete one channel. Can anybody help? I've tried using the search feature, nothing came up on this particular issue.

Posted by: Tpma4life

About using audacity to make the ringtones, I was reading the help file in audacity to look where you can select and edit individual channels. I don't see it. I'll include an attachment, and link it to photobucket, if anyoen can point out how to do this..I already know how to make ringtones without this method, but they're 350-something k each, and I'd much rather get the 100-200 he's getting so I can fit more.

Here's a link to a screenshot from my audacity, it doesn't show anything about individual channels.

http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v...nt=audacity.jpg

If anyone can help me from the selecting the channels, changing one to mono, and deleting the right one, any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, for some reason it won't let me select 16000, anything else is fair game though..anyway to fix this?

My AIM is Taukzerro if anyone wishes to contact me.

With Razorlame you can make the file size 50 kB if you wanted to:

All you would have to do is adjust the bitrate and make the ringtone mono.

Okay, I've got ringtones that are the correct size. I've got them in both MP3 and .mid formats. I'm trying to figure out how to get them onto my phone and then how to set them as actual ringtones. I have a VX5300. Thanks in advance!

I tried doing this 3 times and I'm not receiving the e-mail messages on my phone.

I have a brand new 8300 with no SD card, no USB cables, nothing. I have a 30 KB mp3 that I want to use as a ringtone. I've tried e-mailing it to myself in 3 different formats (wav, mid, and mp3) and I don't even receive the messages much less the files themselves.

I have the basic 300 min/month plan and no texting plan. Is there something special I need to do? I really don't wanna shell out any extra money for this. I just have one stupid small mp3 I wanna use for a ringtone and it's not worth the price of a music kit and/or an SD card just to do this.

Is there anything at all that can be done? Do I need to manually check my message box or set up that part of my account again? It seems like I should at least be receiving the messages even if I can't use the files.

Sorry for the dumb question but I can't figure this out....

Using Audacity, whenever I import audio, it plays the track in like two seconds, I can't edit it at all because I don't know what it sounds like. Does anyone else have this problem? It's happened since I JUST freshly installed it, so I don't think I could have changed any settings

I am confused about the instructions for converting my mp3 file. Can someone please guide me step by step through every specific instruction to get my mp3 snippet emailed to my phone as a ringtone? I really don't want to do a trial and error because I get charged for every email sent to my phone.

I'm feeling really stupid when it comes to this but,

When I open a file and I click on the Effect tab everything is grayed out

Is there a version you have to buy to get those options

All I want to do is make my ringers quiter and all the same volume if possible

Just use Phonezoo.com -- no editing or translating or converting needed! And you can use Skreemr.com if you don't already have a sound file to use.

Tried it but it either gives me a time out message or just does nothing.

I have gotten a 30 sec clip of a song done using Audacity, it ends up being 119kb. I tired e-mailing it to my phone (LG Chocolate 2 VX8550) and the message just never shows up..... using Verizon. I have ready every post in this thread.... seems the only hope I have is to use a cable and bitpim? Still no way to do it with my miniSD card, huh?

Ummm, i was just wondering...
I have a Telus LG8500 phone and I'm a bit confused as to what is happening. I have some ringtones that I have shortened to 30 secs that are in mp3 format. Will these still play as ringtones on my phone? Also, i have the memory card reader that sticks into the usb slot in my laptop. Also, if I do change my mp3 format ringtones into midis, what folder would I put it in?

the phone won't read ringers from the sd card. you need to use bitpim to do this following it's howto. otherwise send them as a pix message to the phone and save as a ringtone.

How could i send them as a pix message to my phone???

Posted by: 3dmac

first you need to know your phones email address which is usually 10digitphone#@xyz!@#.!@#. To get it email yourself from your phone. You can set a new contact with this info.

Then when you have this send the ringer aas an attachment to the phones address from you PC.

i was wondering when you say "now you are ready to download to your phone" are you meaning it can be sent to your phone by a site or you have to have a usb cord?

Posted by: carolinachik

and if sending as an attachment does not work then what?

I've successfully put some mp3 ring tones on my phone. I put the mp3s on my sd card and then I use bit pim. Are the ring tones being read from my sd card or does bit pim move them to my phone. Just wondering because I have a 1gb sd card and if the ring tones are on my sd card I won't bother editing them with audacity.

still need to use audacity to edit them down to size. Follow bitpims directions for loading to the phone. look under the online help for your phone.

any way I can do this (or something similar) using my LG Rumor that just came out for Bell Mobility? Also, what is bitpim? if its an app, I don't have the usb cable for my phone, i have to use my microSD card and a SD card adapter in my comp to put things on the phones memory card.

I haven't had time to read all of the pages in this thread so I apologise if this has been covered before. Has it been mentioned that there is an Audacity Wiki? I was having some problems and the page 1 instructions were not clear to me so I posted at Audacity's Forum and they directed me to the Wiki. All of my tones have been a breeze to make.

I just wanted to share this info. with y'all. Keep up the good work!

i doubt this has anything to do with it but i use Adobe Audition 3.0

i just cant seem to get the volume on my homemade ringtones to compare with the pre-loaded ones. and when i do raise it, after a certain point (usually when i get to +10db) it gets all distorted

just for reference, here are the settings i use...
Rate: 16000
Channels: 1 (mono)
Resolution: 32-bit (float)

Posted by: 3dmac

try raising the bit rate to +22k to 44.1k and also if there is an eq setting for loudness.
Purchased real ringtones are usually at 44100 sample rate.
