7290 Cingular

A few problems with the new 7290 on Cingular-

1-uses only the original Cingular network, does not use the AT&T network. 7280 will use both, 7290 uses Cingular.

2-when on 7290 trying to go to voicemail, it the unit will not send the end of password character, have to manually put in the # key to get messages.

Any comments?

As far as the network is concerned, that should not be an issue shortly.

I have a 7280 that has been upgraded to 4.0. I can no longer do any type of network selection - it is listed as Cingular only - so it is most likely an OS issue and not a 7290 specific issue.

I guess it is a software issue?

On the 7280 it would search, now with the 7290 there is NO option for other networks. I sort of think there may be more to this.

I use a Cingular 7290 as well. It will use old AT&T towers if a Cingular one is not available. It still displays Cingular but my BB works in areas that previously were only AT&T.

Thanks for the note. I am told that if you bought a 7280 from the original Cingular network, only the 7290 will not work from the AT&T towers. The 7280 worked on both towers.

My 7290 worked great in the Portland, OR area. Previously an AT&T only area.

Network selection has nothing to do with the Blackberry 7290 or any GSM device...it's all in the SIM card you have.

Call Cingular and have them send you an OTA update...that may resolve it but don't blame it on the Blackberry. The Cingular SIM disables network selection on any GSM phone you put it in as well.

Thanks, I will give it a try.

Any news as to if & when Cingular will be competitive with T-Mobile's unlimited plan at $20?

I also have a 7280 upgraded to 4.0. and thought the same thing. if you go into options->network then change "network selection mode" from automatic to manual you will then get a button to scan for available networks. From that point the ability to select & stick to another network seems to work much the same as it did before.

attws sourced 7280 with blue sim

I talked to Cingular, IT CANNOT be done. It will only search as I had said the orginal Cingular network, NOT AT&T.

That option is only for the 7280, not the 7290.

It doesn't work with a 7290 and an old AT&T SIM.

The SIM locks out network selection not the F/W. Or is network selection not possible on a 7290 period?

with Cingular only 7290, NO network selection, only the old Cingular network

Could it be that you are using a new Cingular SIM? I know for a fact that a Cingular branded 7290 will switch to old AT&T towers even using a new 64K SIM. You can't really tell because it still displays Cingular but, like I said before, my 7290 worked great in Portland which had no Cingular towers. An AT&T only market.

i have the 64k sim. your area maybe a tower type which may differ from here in SF.

Here's how it works: With a new Cingular SIM, you can not do a network selection. Period. Unless you can talk them into sending you an OTA to allow it.

It has noting to do with the 7290. Put that SIM in any phone and try it. Same result.

I talked with them, they canNOT send an OTA.

I haven't done this myself, but I've seen it reported on here that they have been sent the OTA.

...and for additional reference, a Cingular 7290 with a T-Mobile SIM can perform network scans without any problem.

I have no explaination for this so I’ll just give you a sequence of events & let the rest of you draw your own conclusions. All of this takes place in the Seattle market. I have 7280 with a blue at&t sim purchased about a year ago. I upgraded it to 4.0 OS last week. The network page was different but it would still allow a network scan & would usually find three networks. At&T Wireless, Cingular Wireless & T-Mobile. I could select & use Cingular or AT&T but even though T-Mobile was listed I could never successfully register on it which is the way it has always worked. There is an “H” by AT&T as the home network. The banner at the top of the screen said AT&T Wireless as it always has. Now, I did not specifically check all of that again this morning but I’m fairly sure all of that was still true.

My Unlocked, Cingular branded 7290 (3.8) arrived this morning so I powered down the 7280 & installed it’s SIM into the 7290. The banner at the top of the screen says “Cingular”. After syncing & doing a data restore the banner still said “Cingular”. The network selection screen looks the same as it did on the 80 with 4.0 however when I do a network scan it only finds two networks; “Cingular” & “Cingular Wireless”. “Cingular has the H beside it. T-Mobile is not listed but I can manually select either “Cingular” or “Cingular Wireless” and successfully register on either.

Out of curiosity I powered down the 7290 & moved the SIM back to the 7280. Now the banner at the top of the 80s screen says Cingular and the manual network scan only lists “Cingular” and “Cingular Wireless”

Then I put a t-mobile SIM in the 7290. Network scan now shows "T-Mobile H", "Cingular Wireless" and "AT&T Wireless"

Experiment ends.

Cingular = Old Cingular
Cingular Wireless = Old AT&T Wireless

or the opposite
