Curitel PST can do it but you need the (new) firmware file that you want to upload to the phone.

I have the Curitel PST. I also can get the firmware file, but I don't know if it will be a newer one than the one you already got. I'll let you know the version as soon as I get it.

I believe the firmware must match your phone providers version, or else it wont work either .... i.e. cricket phones need a firmware from cricket ...

That's false in most cases. The original firmware is fully functional and has every feature that the phone has. The CSPs (like Verizon, Cricket, etc) disable or "cut" some features (ie: a non BREW enabled CSP, disables BREW on the phone so the customers don't make questions about it, another example is Verizon that disabled EMS on the 8600, etc). This is why some people (like me) wants the original firmware and not the CSP firmware on the phone. AFAIK the only CSP which needs a different firmware is Sprint, if you use the original firmware, the WAP browser won't work (the other features will work) but I have never confirmed this.

I haven't seen the original firmware for the 8610, the phone is still too new, you should wait some time or get an 8600

Yes. If you flash a java enabled firmware onto it, you'll have Java on your phone. That's what people use to do with the Moto T720 (it's very easy to find their firmwares).
