Is the MPx220 worth getting?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

okay, I've gotten kinda bored with using my 6620 for so long now so I've decided it was time for a change.

while I do have my heart set on a S710a, God only knows when it'll be released so I've been thinking about getting a MPx220 just to tide my "bordnomness" over until I can get a S710a.

but I've heard so many mixed reviews about the MPx220 (both good and bad) so I was wondering if they (meaning Motorola) have gotten their problems panned out with the MPx220.

by the way, the ONLY reason why I'm thinking about getting a MPx220 is because I have an inside source that can get me one for $75 with no contract extension. I know I'll easily be able to triple my money on ebay when I'm ready to ditch the MPx220 when the S710a is available.

so what do you guys think? is the MPx220 worth messing with or should I ditch the whole idea altogether?

A little snipping and reorganizing here....

Depends. If you want a good MP3 player, get an iPod, Rio or my favorite, iRiver. If you want a good camera, I love my Nikon Coolpix. If you want a good gaming piece, can't go wrong with the XBox or PS2. If you want a good phone that syncs with Outlook, keeps a myriad of contacts and appointmens with pretty good voice recognition and Bluetooth, then the MPx220 is for you.

no. the audio is crap

id go for it..i was a little skeptical at first also but i just went for it and im pretty happy about my decision. sure i have a mpx-220 with .325 but hopefully ill get that reflashed soon. mp3's sound awesome on this phone...just as good as my standalone mp3 player. camera is VERY decent..id say even better than my old v600, its just picky about lighting conditions. ive found that using the outdoor setting significantly raises earpiece volume even if Normal is set as loud. only gripe with this phone rite now is that i cant have bluetooth on and take nice pics at the same time (.325 firmware issue only)

I've been really happy with my mpx220 since I got it 12/29...audio WAS bad, but I just switch to the outdoor profile if I want it louder. Although, I just discovered that the volume settings for each profile can be modified.

Now if I can only figure out how to take pictures that are as clear as the ones posted here. And take better videos.

But these are user challenges, so I don't think it's the phone's problem, but a matter of me learning to use it better. So far, I love this phone -- I wanted a good phone with some PDA capabilities so I got what I wanted and then some, all for $100.

Really? I usually keep mine on silent mode, and I have to keep the volume about half way down - otherwise it is too loud - and I am half deaf in one ear and don't hear well out of the other! Plays midi and mp3 ringtones well too!

(ATTWS .343 firmware)

for $75 bucks and no contract extention...this is a no-brainer..go for it!

The Mpx220 has its down falls like very other phone. Its not perfect but its worth its price and its worth getting. I have one and when i got mine the audio was really bad but the upgrade for the filmware for it helped alot. There is pretty much nothing you cant do with this phone. I believe that no phone is prefct but its all about what fits the person so everyone is going to have a different answer to this question because your asking their opinion and most of the people that answer dont even have the phone, they go by what they read. So just go to a Best Buy and see if you can test the phone and go by your own judgement. But from me personally, I like it, yeah it could be better but what phone cant be, right?!

P.S: But if your a picture freak then just have to say the cam really does suck though lol. Thats not personal thats fact! U really have to play with the settings to fix it.

thats where having an insider with Cingular comes in VERY handy.

I would like to try the phone but not for 299.00

well, I have no intention(s) on actually keeping the phone.

like I said earlier, I just bought the phone to tide me over until Cingular releases the S710a.

I'll then dump my MPx220 on ebay and hopefully double or even triple my $75 investment.

It's possible to get the mpx220 for a lot less if you buy from those small mobile phone stores that are authorized to sell for various carriers (Cingular, TMobile, etc.). If you're willing to switch carriers, they can easily give you a good price on any phone you want since they make most of their money from signing up new customers with a plan that's (typically) at least $39.99/ mo. I was able to get mine for only $100 by switching from TMobile (which I got sick of anyhow). Now I have a 1 yr contract w/ Cingular and a deal with the store to come back and upgrade my phone after a year if I want (they'll buy my mpx back and add the proceeds to other discounts and rebates so I should get my next phone for relatively cheap as well).
