Hey all

To the point:

What are the different options for using Yahoo IM and the charges associated with those options. So is there one way to use it so it charges airtime and then another way to use it where it charges per KB?

Long Version of the same question:

My brother is out of state for a little while and has an OGO thru Cingular which allows for IMing (over GPRS) and text messaging. My dad has never used TXT Messaging or IM but is now interested in it to easily communicate with his son. My brother uses Yahoo IM thru his OGO so I already got my dad setup with a Yahoo IM account on his computer.

Now he's asking about using IM from his phone. Because my brothers OGO receives TXT messages, as well as IM's, I think the easiest thing to do is to explain to my dad the charges for SMS and how to use it. Then he can IM while on the computer and TXT from his phone if he feels the need.

However, I would like to give him his options so I'm hoping somebody can explain the choices of using Yahoo IM with Verizon Wireless on the 7135 and how the different charges. I already found IM software thru Handango but I'm not sure what you have to do on the VZW side of things to use that software. I'm also not sure if there's other options.

From Handango I found the Causerie Unified Messenger for MSN, Yahoo, Sametime and Jabber - Standard Edition software which would give him Yahoo on the phone.

Thanks for your time!

For some dumb reason, (or maybe they were'nt making any money) Yahoo discontinued messenger for Palm devices. You could pay for a program that logs you into Yahoo, Aim, and Msn at the same time through the Quick2Net connection feature. (14.4 kbs air time charges only, free weekend and after 9:00, you can't get phone calls while connected) or you can use the wap browser version of yahoo (instructions on their site) but you'll have to pay $5 per month to verizon to enable wap on the 7135. (plus air time charges) Either way, you'll be eating up minutes the whole time you're connected. You're better off having friends who want to send you a messege, using the computer, and clicking on the mobile icon on top of the messege window. (instructions on yahoo), and replying to their email address, which will alert thier messenger that they have mail. If you must use messenger, then go to palmone.com and search for a program that lets you IM normally. Unfortunately they're not free.

You can download a free version of AOL Instant Messager for Palm from AOL's UK web site or you can purchase the same program from Handigo for $20.
The PC version of AIM is free from either site.

I tried a Yahoo Messenger prc I downloaded from YahooUK. It doesn't work. Crashed my 7135. I just stick with text based messaging. Just set ur messenger to Go Mobile and have someone send u a text. Then save that message and you can reply to them anytime you like without having to log into anything or even be online. It goes out as a text message.

Google VeriChat and download demo.

It allows you to aim, yahoo, and msn im, and its just like your using the real programs. (Text only) You can have up to 20 open windows between the 3. YOu can use the program under QNC mode (#777) so it wont use minutes, at least thats how I used on Alltel.

The program demo only lasts 30 days, but all you have to do is reset the date on your palm if you dont want to pay for it.
