Video Editing Anyone??

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: mikewchandler

I do alot of home video editing and burning dvd's. I have virtually no one I talk to about this stuff and get on a few forums occassionally (pinnacle studio 8 and windows movie maker). Any other video editing/burning pocket pc phone users out there???

Posted by: whtrbt7

ooh hehehehe, one of my favorite topics =). Virtualdub rulez!!!!

I need to have stuff perform on my Archos AV480 so I have to edit videos to run well on the device.

Posted by: BigDaddy5

I video edit and DJ on my PC. Video editing is painful on it (it's a 2.8, but celeron). I literally, and I think I took pictures if you want, had to take ice in bags, and put them under the machine during the conversions in order to keep it cool enough from turning off. It turned off twice before while doing the same freakin clip, so that was the only way to do it.

But my pop's 2.2 p4 had the same issue, and was even a different brand.

Used to do it all on a mac back in 01 for a TV Station, it was a lot of fun. I think my next video editing machine will be a dual processor, either P4 or HT, I'm not sure yet.

What do you guys use to edit? I use a combination of window's movie maker (b/c of it's credits mostly), showbiz (almost never) and mostly pinnacle (great transitions but pretty buggy). It has been very painful with lots of hangups (even with a new laptop with a 1G RAM and 3Ghz P4) UNTIL... I got a little tool called Enditall!!!

That little sucker stops all running processes (that I didn't even know about) and most all of my hangups are gone bye-bye!

Anyway, do you guys do more home video's or what??

whtrbt7, What is a "Archos AV480"? Not familiar with that? And, what does your handle stand for?

It seems like I've read that Celeron is tough to video edit on? B/C of the control on the processor speed? I understand the ice-bag thing. I put my laptop on my bed in front of a big fan...LOL!!

Is that Adobe Premiere? That is pretty expensive isn't it?

Okie dokie, I'm an official insomniac. Do I never sleep? I feel like a vampire. Maybe I am . Regarding editing software, I use a combination depending on what I am doing. I use Adobe Premier, Adobe Aftereffects, Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Fireworks, Adobe Photoshop, Kai's Power Tools, AVIMUX, Virtualdub, Sound Forge, Matroska, and K-lite codecs. Wow, try saying that 5 times fast. That's about USD$5k worth of stuff I think. I also have a few other tools that I didn't mention. Most of it is to clean up old videos from the early days of American Swing dancing whatnot and also for commercial purposes. For those of you interested in video editing, one of my favorite companies is putting out what they call NO2 for PCs. You need a supply of liquid nitrogen to process high speed video editing on these new boards. It's pretty cool (no pun intended) and it allows fast rendering and graphics processing.

@Mikewchandler
The Archos AV480 is an 80GB PVP. I use it for recording and playback of video and MP3s when I am on the go. It also acts as my personal 80GB storage while I am traveling. Oh BTW, my handle is from the old days (it's a secret). So PM me if you want to know more. It stands for the White Rabbit. Regarding Celeron processor video editing: don't do it. You could cause some serious damage to your processor if you try to render a decent amount of video using that thing.

Posted by: Smahatma2

I use Adobe Premiere and especially Adobe After Effects (the videos I create tend to be very fast paced and special effects-ridden) (plus the usual graphics tools like photoshop and illustrator, and audio tools like sound forge)

For web distrobution: encoded in windows media 9 with windows media encoder (free); or xvid using virtualdub or gordian knot

For DVD: video encoded to mpeg2 with CinemaCraft Encoder, audio encoded to DTS with Minnetonka Surcode, and authored to DVD with Sonic Scenarist

Thanks guys. I was curious what everyone else is using to do your editing. Now my head is swimming with all those tools.

I use Pinnacle to edit (mostly home videos of my sons). I have a 3 y/o, 2 y/o and one on the way.

Anyway, how do you guys save a copy of your videos (a digital copy). I don't have room to save the original .avi...lol...like anyone does.

I've been converting them to divx and saving that. If needed in the future (like if my boys use the dvd as a coster or something), I can just burn the divx straight to dvd. The quality is almost as good as the original without having to store hundreds of gigs of movies on my hard drive.

Anybody have any better ways of storing your movies digitally??

@ whtrbt7. Sorry, not trying to be nosy I was just trying to figure it out.

Posted by: BigDaddy5

My dad just discovered a program that he uses for amateur editing. It really does it all for you, but unfortionatly I can't remember what it's called. It's very very simple, you pick the song, pick the length, import the clips, pick the type of transitions, and it does it automatically.

AHH, found it, it's called muvee. It's not professional quality editing, but it's great for home movies and stuff.

Personaly, I use Adobe Premiere. I think it's the best program I've used since I was editing for a TV station using a full Mac/AVID set-up.

Posted by: whtrbt7

@mikewchandler
np lots of people ask where I'm from (mentally)

DivX or Xvid is excellent storage format for video. Although it misses on some quality from the original, it is negligible in today's resolutions. You may also want to consider Matroska since it is the same size but isolated the video and audio tracks for multiplexing. Matroskas are a pain in the arse to encode properly but once they are done, you have an excellent product. Also either keep videos on hard drives with RAID or use optical storage (DVD rack) with lots of empty space for recovery.

For those of you yanking video from sources, make sure you use good cables and high resolution capture equipment. You want your first shots to be extremely high in quality since over editing time, the video quality can degrade.

Posted by: mikewchandler

I would love to try Adobe Premiere but can't spend 500 on it Pinnacle wasn't that much. I also use Window's Movie Maker some and then some other stuff for minor rendering, burning "issues".

Posted by: whtrbt7

Try getting into a class for video editing. They normally give the class and the software for a fraction of what it is worth since they have a bulk license.

Good suggestion. I might try to do that sometime. B/T my kids and work, it would be hard but I would love to.

I just received my new Plextor PX-716A which replaced my Plextor 708A...The new 716A burns DVD+R at 16X and will also burn Double Layer D9 media. It came bundled with a new 16X DVD+R. I am using Pinnacle along with Hollywood FX and Roxio Media Maker 7. I have also made up my mind to start using the Nero Media Maker Software, which won the Softy award with Maximum PC.... When using this hardware with my ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 Pro card, I can capture and record analog video, TV shows, and HDTV as well.

Current software for DVD burning is as follows..

#1 DVD Ripper: Great for ripping commercial DVDs and saing them for streaming or encoding for use on my various devices...be it Pocket PC, Smartphone, Symbian or my normal OS phones like the SE K700/S700. Be sure to download the Divx Codec as well as the ASPI driver...

Get it here.....

http://www.dvdtox.com/download.htm

DVD-Cloner: This is an absolutely outstanding piece of software for a DVD-DVD clone of your favorite movie. It strips the encryption and then burns the .vob files to your DVD. It supports D9 and as soon as I get some double layer media...I should be able to make absolute perfect copies of my commercial DVD movies.. Otherwise, it will allow you to burn just the movie without the movies and subtitles or split the movie into two discs...

Get it here.....

http://www.dvd-cloner.com/

Windows Media Encoder: A free application, it encodes movies in .wva for playback on Windows Media Player. Use it in conjunction with #1 DVD Ripper above to put your favorite movie on a Pocket PC......

Get it here.....

See my tutorial for encoding movies here....

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=261926

PvAuthor for Encoding Movie into Mpeg4.3gpp extention.... Use this for super compressed movies to be played back on devices supporting the popular .3gpp extention. This is commonly found on Symbian Devices and regular cell phones, but is also used on Smartphones and Pocket PCs such as the MpX. It will compress a movie to less than 128mb with pretty good quality.. Use it with #1 DVD Ripper above.

Get it here....

http://www.packetvideo.com/shop/authordownload.asp

See my tutorial on how to use it here.....

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=231900

There are also other applications for encoding movies for playback on mobile devices, streaming your library of movies to your Pocket PC, etc.......

SmartMovie.......You need both the player and the encoding software, but the results are better and more flexible for .3gpp files....

Get it here.....

Poket TV for streaming your movies to your device....information here.....

Some examples of the movies on different devices.....

Sony Ericsson P900 in Mpeg4.3gpp format......

iMate and P900 comparison.....

iMate Pocket PC....

iMate JAM.....

Those are just some of the software programs I use with my DVD collection as well as the mobile devices I have. Basically, you can take those tools and do just about what ever you want to and can afford. I really love

Sweet DVD writer Bengalboy!!!!!!!

I've been slacking off on burning stuff since I am continually capturing and/or processing. How is the double layer burn working? I used the Sony one when the double layer burner first came out. I had major problems burning correctly since the hardware wasn't tuned right. Ended up with lots of double layer coasters .

@Evans
I don't think you mean "uber". I think it's more like "deranged" .

Thanks Mark.

Yes, I'm having a few issues as well with some of my apps and the Plexy locking up.....I believe its the PlexPro Tools app...Gotta fool around with some...but boy, when it is working properly...talk about buring 4.7gb fast!! I remember just about 3 years ago getting my "Bleeding Edge" TDK 12X burner.....it would eat up a 700mb CDR in about 8 minutes give or take a few seconds...thougt that was fast????

Don't have any Double Layer media you would like to spare do you Whtrbt?? Can't find any around here. Hell, I'm trying to decide what Movie gets the privilege of being burned on my 16X Verbatim DVD??? Fastest thing in my area is the 8X media....Where did you get the D9 media at??

Mike, hope some of that is helpful.... Seems that you are enjoying the power of your PC and video card as well??? I love mine and all the possibilities it opens for TV, Video and Movie Archiving... With a streamer in your home, you can stream movies from room to room via WiFi...really fun accumulating a movie library as well.

Posted by: mikewchandler

Mark, all I'm really doing with my video editing is home videos. I enjoy making some creative movies of my boys. Every year, I take the best of my home videos and make a 5 minute music video containing about 60 of my fav clips with transitions and a song. It's usually a tear jerker when I'm finished.

It's amazing how much time I spend working on the video stuff. It seems like I spend hours trying to find ways to save myself time.

I also use DVD shrink, DVD santa, video cleaner, #1 DVD ripper, dvd to avi, Canopus DV file converter (when converting avi type 1 to type 2 for editing with Pinnacle from WMM), sonic my dvd. I think that's about it.

I think I'm going to save my movies on 2 dvd's and delete all digital copies. I can't stand to give up the quality with divx and don't have the room to store avi's. If I have a problem with one of my dvd's, I'll just use dvd shrink to burn a hardcopy and burn with dvd santa.

Posted by: mikewchandler

I didn't know this but dvdsanta will actually burn an exact copy of dvd straight to dvd as well as change to .avi, .mpeg, etc...

I just made a backup of all my dvds and deleted all digital copies to create room on my hard drive.

have you tried editing using the muvee software? i heard they have the same software on nokia phones too...have you seen it?

I played with their automatic video editor. It's decent, but it's not something I'd use. My pops uses it because he doesn't have time to sit down and edit a film. He is pleased with his movies though, so I guess it's not bad.

Posted by: toothieblue

i haven't tried the muvee software for PC but i do have the muvee software on my 6630 and so far i'm really enjoying it. If you really think of it, people records video on their cellphones but that's it, they look at it twice and their done. At least now they can spice up their videos with this muvee

Posted by: mikewchandler

I'm getting ready to start up my yearly video editing again (Christmas presents) I'm also trying to burn a copy of a few scratched DVD's. I'm having a little trouble since their commercial (ie Monsters Inc., Nemo, etc...). I usually just burn copies of my home videos. Any suggestions?

Posted by: zaec

i'm a n00b in video editing. i tried windows movie maker. it's easy. and also i've found presentavid (http://www.presentavid.com) and it's simple and nice too. and the main advantage of presentavid is that it can publish outputs in various formats such as avi, swf, flv, wmv, mpeg, gif and even can burn dvd automatically to view on a dvd player. exactly for those who start with all of these i guess.

Posted by: mikewchandler

I'll have to take a look at presentavid. Sounds interesting.

How did I not see this thread until now?!! Let me help, I know a little bit.

I would recommend AVID products. Basically, they are the "Photoshop" of video editing. Yeah, there are other programs out there, but they are all based off AVID's user interface.

Also, they offer a free version just to get people interested in their product. Here's the link:
http://www.avid.com/freedv/index.asp

As for the hardware, you want as powerfull as you can get for obvious reasons. At work here I'm running an HP workstation xw8000. But we also have the "Adrenaline" hardware accelerator, which I doubt any of you all would need. But it does allow up to like, 5 streams of uncompressed video, which makes rendering transitions and simple effects unnecessary.

We also have Sorenson's Squeeze. It's just a basic compression software, but I like it for it's ease of use & you can compess any format & control all the settings you want, from low-stream QT to high-bandwidth RealPlayer or WMV's.

ps-here's some links to some YouTube's of some stuff I've done at work.

What an interesting thread indeed, I'm going through a 3-year job training program to become a video editor (cutter) at RTL Television here in Cologne, Germany which is the largest private TV network in Europe (they're owned by Bertelsmann which is known for Random House and Sony BMG). RTL has two locations in Cologne (its German headquarters, the RTL Group is headquartered in Luxemburg).

I tried AVID Free myself but it didn't work out for me at home. I prefer trying things out at work. RTL still does a lot of linear editing from Digital Betacam source material to edited DigiBeta materials that end up being what people watch on RTL in Germany. We also have several AVID XPress edit suites, Final Cut Pro and DigiDesign ProTools (sound editing/mixing) setups at the RTL location in Cologne-Ossendorf where the subsidiary networks VOX, Super RTL and n-tv (CNN Germany) are located. RTL's main location also uses a combination of traditional linear editing and non-linear editing (i.e. AVID or Final Cut Pro).

Anyway sorry to get carried away, a lot of video editing in Germany is shifting to AVID-based non-linear editing. I haven't done anything with AVID yet myself but when the time comes, I'll gladly join in on the thread .

I've done a few film courses at University, as well as a couple of Computer Animation courses which touched on editing and compositing. During the film courses, we used a solely Mac platform, using new G5 iMacs running Final Cut Pro and GarageBand etc. During the animation courses we used PC's Adobe Premiere Pro. I'll have to say I found the Macs nicer and easier to work on. The platform seemed more intuitive and with a decent >1 button mouse (we brought our own MS mice to plug in ) editing was very quick and painless. Premiere on the other hand, was clunky and slow, crashed often, especially on rendering, and was generally painful. Admittedly, the Macs were set aside for video editing only, whereas the PCs had to run heaps of other multimedia software on them, which could have contributed to their stability. Mind you if you had a PC designed and dedicated to editing, it would probably be as stable as the Mac.

I'd say that if I had to do video editing for a living, I'd probably spend the cash and purchase a Mac, because frankly I've found that they are better at it than PC's.

Just my 2c :P

Posted by: TriBand81

Macs especially the G5 series are preferred by most German television networks since the CPU and the computer as a whole unit are able to process more data at the same time. All of the AVID Xpress edit suites, Final Cut Pro and the DigiDesign ProTools-equipped sound mixing suites have G5s. OS 9.2. stills works ok with the G5s but the IT guys at work upgraded a couple of the G5s in the sound mixing suites to OS X which copes much better with the input that ProTools throws at it.

It's a great sector to work in and hopefully, RTL will invest in better technology once they move to one central location here in Cologne (currently RTL has its own location and the subsidiary RTL channels VOX, Super RTL and n-tv have their own location) in 2008.

Try SmartMovie; it's really cool and simple to use! You can convert and edit as you go, before transfering it onto your PPC SD card! I have the FULL version here: www.cellpda.tk

So is that freeware ?? because if its not , you really need to take a look at This , specially number 4 !!

But judging by this : Welcome to Forum CELLPDA where cracking is not a NEED, but a PASSION!

Stryker,

what's the deal with batch capturing with an AVID setup in the US, do you see more BetaSP or DigiBeta source material? Or has it gone as far as HDCAM players/recorders being used for the newer HDTV-based source material?

But why did you switch to Final Cut? I know a lot of people are using it now, especially more "Hollywood" movies, but it still seems like a system that just doesn't have the hardware to allow many streams of uncompressed media. Or do you take your online edit to a different post house? Plus, with Apple being so proprietary & not allowing any developers to get their hands on any machines before the public, there's such a wait time before any third party stuff can come out on it. But I'm very interested in it because of the cost effective-ness of it.

Hi Mike,

I used to do some video post in the past. Now I've been focusing on my 3D modeling and animation for some local architectural firms and a few TV commercials, but I do some video editing from time to time. Mainly for personal DVDs.

I purchased a Mac just for this reason and I love it (Final Cut Pro).

I also use Windows for basic video editing and post production (After Effects, Premiere, and Movie Maker).

I've seen your video reviews and I love them! I have based my purchase decisions based on your videos.

Thanks and keep up the good work!

Regards,
RayanMX

Hi Mike,

Nice to meet you, your're such a celebrity...

I've seen all your video reviews which I think are a must for us gadget freaks!

Yeah, I can't wait for the TyTN to arrive. Hopefully by tomorrow. I'll let you know as soon as I get my hands on it. I'll PM in a bit so we don't get off-topic here...

Cheers!
