MPx220: Email n Sms ringer won't go off

Hi,
I'm having this problem where I receive a text message or email and my ringer kept ringing. For normal call I would just press the side button for the ringer to shut off. However, it was not the case for text. It gets annoying when I have my phone lock after 10min and I have to punch in the password to turn the sound off. Imagine in lecture and it kept going off. I do not like to put it on vibrate though but if there is no other way I will have to. It just seem to me there got to be a way.
f/w 1.3 with sound software that allow mp3/wav to be set for text and email. Thx for your help
