Can a Sidekick I or II be used on prepay tmobile?

I have heard conflicting answers as to whether or not it can be used as a prepay phone. I was first told yes but no real sidekick functionality ( web browsing or aim). Then I was told no not all. Can someone help me out? I have been a nextel man for almost 4 years and I'm lost with tmobile.

You should be able to use the phone part of the SK2 on a prepaid plan, but the data plan needed in order for the SK2 to be fully functional would not be available.

This is my Pro opinion on this.

Yes it is possible HOWEVER, if you eventually get a screen called "waiting for activation" & are unable to bypass it by pressing Shift + Menu + L, then you are toast.

The device was designed to be used as a Data device with a Data plan and not on prepaid or voice only so try it at your own risk.

Other than SMS youc an forget about data or wap access with the device.

Yes, you can use it with prepaid, only calling and texting, makes the sidekick useless pretty much.

Thanks guys it did work as expected no data but cellular and text messg. I have also been able to recieve picture mssgs too.

just to warn you, all the info you put on your phone (numbers etc) won't be able to be relayed to the Danger servers, so the moment that puppy turns off for ANY reason, all your stuff is gone. so there is no point in using it without data.

Good Point Actually. Nothing is saved on the sim bro. NOTHING. That thing needs to have power all the time or you can kiss your info good bye

yeah you're right. only after a hard reset. but still. hiptops sporadically hard reset sometimes anyways, so either way, all your stuff is gone.

I hope you guys aren't right. I have it as a back up to my nextel and it's kinda a toy for me. I have turned it off a couple of times for class and ×××× and the info is still on there so I hope it stays that way.

I think what you thought u did was actually a soft reset. That is done by poking the reset hold or pressing @+1+0 on the keypad. A hard reset is when you hold the power button down and poke the reset hole at the same time. Please don't try it! You will be sorry.

I hope your SK II has the firnware OTA update in it. Cause if you take a picture with you camera in the device and it freezes you only choice will be a hard reset.

Letting the Battery run totallly dry does th same thing

Thanks for the info. I hope it never happens though. I have a sidekick 1 anyway so I won't be taking any pictures anytime soon.
