Siemens' Mobile division is looking for a buyer, or it will face closure. Struggling to make a profit last year, the company lost 140 million euros fourth quarter of 2004.

The final decision will be announced at a general meeting on January 27th.

I guess that explains the lack of new mobile devices from Siemens at CES this year.

Siemens never present phones on CES do they?

Siemens will present new phones on CeBIT (Hannover, March) and maybe also one or two at 3GSM (Cannes, February).

FRANKFURT (AFP) - German electronics giant Siemens is reportedly in talks to sell its loss-making mobile phones business to South Korean firm LG Electronics.

The business weekly WirtschaftsWoche did not reveal its sources, but it quoted a study by management consultancy Accenture as saying that Siemens' activities in the area of mobile phone handsets were not in a position to survive current fierce global competition.

"The market is looking more and more like the consumer electronics market, which is characterized by increased competition and falling prices," Accenture expert Nikolaus Mohr was quoted as saying.

"Siemens can't keep up," Mohr added.

WirtschaftsWoche said a sale of the business was looking increasingly likely.

Siemens was scheduled to unveil its plan for the business at the upcoming shareholders meeting on January 27.

Chairman Heinrich von Pierer has said several times that the options included a restructuring, sale, cooperation or complete shutdown.

Chinese firm Ningbo Bird and Japanese group NEC have been mooted in the press as possible joint venture partners.

Perhaps this explains the reason the SX66 is impossible to find. If I was Cingular, I'm not sure I would be selling a product that may become obsolete within 3 days...Too bad, the SX66 looks great. I only wish it had a camera.
