P910a slow performance?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Hello all,
I'm on the fence about purchasing the SE P910a... I've read a couple reviews that mentioned the devices slow performance, with respect to the OS speed, etc. My only SE phone was the T616, and i must admit the device was VERY slow... especially after a few months of use, and the memory started to fill up. The device became pretty unstable and slow (even after clearing out the memory). It would wait forever to have menus appear, keystokes to register, etc. After reading the complaints about the P910a, i started to wonder if this is a problem that plagues all SE phones?

If anyone has hands-on experience, please comment. I'd hate to drop $799 on this phone only to find it was just as bad as the T616.

Thanks,

Johnny

Would hate to see you drop $799 on this phone too, considering www.howardforums.com.com has it for $709

Yeah, i know it's not $799, i was just trying to make a dramatic point

I've actually tried three different BUY IT NOW auctions on ebay, and they were all fraud.

anyway, i guess my "slow performance" question is going to be ignored.

Thanks for the reply.

Bought mine 2 weeks ago for .... $799 from SE just for peace of mind (got a HBH-600 for free with it but I consider that a wash -- I don't like it.) Read you question and wanted to see if there was a performance problem before posting anything. In my opinion based on 2 weeks ownership, there is no such slow performance with my unit. It's definitely faster in all aspects than my previous phone the P900 which I guess would be how I'd measure it. I'd like to hear others' experiences though -- specific problems, etc.

Also my wife has a T610 and she seems to have no problems with her unit. Then again, she uses it 99% of the time for phone calls and SMS and takes a picture once a month.

Thanks haritia,
I guess it is just nitpicking. I personally have used many phones, and find the t616 to be one of the slowest and buggy phones i have used.

Regarding the P910a, even in Howard Chui's review, he mentions the device "feels kind of slow"

I guess I'll just suck it up and buy a p910a, how bad can it be? Besides, once a Microsoft smartphone device is released that actually works and is not shaped like a pocket PC, i'll sell the p910a and move on from there.

Hey, good for you. Personally, I thought the P900 was the best choice of "smartphones" out there and when I broke it (fell into the bath) I upgraded to the P910 and I thnk it's even better. Let us know *your* impressions when you get yours.

I was using Nokia 3650 and my wife's using a Nokia 7610 but I upgraded to SE P900 then to P910 and I find that the refresh rate of P910i a tad slower than P900. Don't know if it's just me but I also find that my P910 seems to respond slower than my wife's N7610...especially in games.

Thanks Francis,
This is the exact complaint I had read about (and same thing i see in many SE phones). I also had a similar problem with my Dell Axim x50v (which was surprising, since it was one of the first handhelds with a graphics accelerator).

My next problem is finding a reliable source for this phone... i made the mistake of checking EBAY, and so far, every auction i've won and PAID for has ended up in a Paypal reversal. My fault for trying to win the item for under $600... even though the sellers had good feedback, the price was too good to be true.

I wish Cingular would butch up and start offering some different phones here in the Miami FL area. It seems they've had the same bland lineup for such a long time.

Just purchased my P910a and got it 2 days ago. It is a small bit slower thant the MPx220 I was using and some slower than the Siemens SX66, but not to bad. I got it from Blueheadsets.com and paid $689. Got it USP in 3 days. Good deal . I really like it but have been unsuccesful in getting any help setting up My Wireless internet. Cingular does not support it so they are useless and Sony E cannot send me the setup for some reason. I'm still waiting to here from them.

Glad to hear you got it safe and sound... I've tried a few times on ebay, and i've ended up on scam after scam.

As a long time Cingular customer, i agree with you, their support stinks.

Regarding the settings, I've seen them posted numerous times for the P910a... do a search for p910a and cingular, and you should find all you need.

Good luck

i found out that most of SE are pretty slow...
the T616 you mentioned about...
the T637 my gf using now...
and the k700 my frd using now...
they all have the "slow" issue

and i am not sure rather is the OS problem or not...those smartphone (nokia 3650) and pda phone seem slower than other phones...

I swapped the original memory card to a 256mb now to a 512 mb, I guess its like a computer more RAM more performance up to a limit of course.

Did you notice a performance difference when you did that? Is that what you're saying?

Posted by: dogenia

Yes the bigger the card, the faster the machiine from my perspective.

don

I find this hard to beleive, since the memory stick duo is simply for storage... the OS runs on the phones memory, which can not be upgraded.

I agree, I think the SE phones are all slow... could be an OS problem, because similar devices exist with more complex interfaces that run faster.

By the way, i just purchased the P910a last week, and although the performance is not as bad as i expected it is slow. I tried installing two apps off the SE website, and they are painfully slow.

As a long time Pocket PC user, i hope we'll have a decent Pocket PC based smartphone soon... I'm not impressed with the Symbian based OS.

Anyway, I'll stop complaining now

Other than the two apps you downloaded, is everything else overall kind of slow?

I've used PPC's and PalmOS devices, so my expectations are sort of coming from there.

I installed AGILE MESSENGER and IM+... both are Instant messanging apps. Agile takes about 5-10 seconds to load! Also, the drop down menus in both programs take about ~1 second to appear after being clicked. They seem a bit clunky, kind of like a Java Applet on a website... that type of experience.

Switching between applications has a small delay as well. The most annoying thing i found is opening email... i had hoped to use the phone's email client, but every time i try to open an email i'm presented with a BUSY message for about 1-1.5 seconds before the email opens. This same taks would occur instantly with my Pocket PC devices.

I come from a Pocket PC background as well, this being my first Symbian based device (never used a Nokia series 60 phone). I had hoped to switch to a Pocket PC based smartphone, but the MPX220 had sound problems (even though the OS and speed were great!), and the other smartphones are too PDA-like. I thought the Sony was a better blend of phone and pda. Unfortunately, the software just does not come close to the Micrsoft devices. It's not the end of the world, i just expected more after paying such a high price. It's something you will get used to with time.

|Funny thing is.. the p900 wasnt this slow. When I first got mine I was having issues. I uninstalled some old apps meant for p900 and it sped up significantly. But yeah, theres still some lag. Hopefully an update fixes this

I find the 910a's speed acceptable. It is a tad slower than a PocketPC but then again the processors are not the same either. One way to keep things snappy is to avoid loading it up with tons of programs and use a simple theme not an elaborate, graphically heavy one.
