here's the senario(sp?) i have the verizion version and they set all but one of the direction buttons(left = browser, down = messages, and right = GIN). i would like to change all of the key bindings, delete the junk that i dont need on the phone other language files and dumpy preset ringtones/pics as well as change the start up sound/boot screen; so basically remove all of the verizon garbage. anyone with info willing to share would be greatly appreciated
first question:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
anyone with a non verizon kx414 willing to email thier firmware(is this the proper term?) to me. if you are worried about giving out ur esn etc... just change it to all zeros. i am guessing anyone who can get thier firmware off thier phone probably knows where to get the software to change thier esn etc.
second question:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
has anyone here ever tried this or something like it with a kx414

I purchased a USCC branded model to use on the VZW network for the exact reasons you've stated.
I have been able to get access to everything, including the built-in games, and even GIN, which I don't use anyway.
If you have a data cable and the PST, I believe you can switch your phone to a generic model and everything will appear in the menu. The only thing that doesn't seem to work anymore is downloading wallpapers or ringtones, because the VZW "Media" menu is no longer in the menu.
I am very curious to see if a VZW branded 414 has these same options as the one I got from USCC. If so, I'd possibly buy a VZW model for another line and just switch it to generic to remove the $$$ features.

well i decided to update this before it dies more so here goes. i figured i'd start with the easiest part first, changing the startup sound. using a hex editor i changed the $sys_rmt file to point to my ringer instead of the startup_generic.mid. only one problem though stupid bit pim wont let me overwrite the $sys file
anyone have any idea how to get around this ?
would it work if i try other fones (bitpim options)?
is there any other program that can write to my fone?

I do know that kx414 supports true tones. I just purchased mine in Feb/2005. I had to return the first one I had due to malfuncntion problems. The 1st one i received byVerizon and i happen to notice that during the time the sales rep. was swaping my phone for the exact same model that the boxes were different. So curious me, i decided to check to see what was differant about the first and second phone. Well the first one I had had the Verizon logo on it the second one had Kyocera. I got the phone home and I did notice that when I went into the get it now menu that there were other applications on this phone that werent on the other and true tones was one of them. So in my search I found out that when verizon had the freeup prepaid plans that the kx414 was designed for this plan and they switched them over to the new Ipuse plan. They also reproduced this phone for the New Impulse plan. In which i ended up getting the new reproduced kx414 for impulse.
