Hi, Guys:

Are there any differences between IR and wireless modem? Because I'd like to use cell phone as a modem to fax. Can I ? I should choose a cell phone with IR or with wireless modem? Because I only have desktop. If I want to use IR(inside cell phone) , what kind cell phone accessories and computer accessories(e.g. IR device) should buy for my destop to fax? How much is it? If i want to use wireless modem ,what should I buy?
I am in Canada.

Another question is: If I buy a dual-band cell phone(like Nokia 6590) here, can I use in China?

Regards,

Hi ewater, If you plan to use a cell phone as a wireless modem, the good news is it can be done. The bad news is it's mind boggling to many people. If your desktop has an IR port (I don't think many do), you might be able to access the phones GPRS that way (check with the manufacturer!). I would suggest buying a phone that has a data cable that either plugs into your serial port or USB port. Several phones have that ability. You just need to look into it and contact your local service provider (or surf the carrier and manufacturer's website). If you go this route, you will need to install some GPRS manager software to manage the connection. It's usually not that difficult, but you may need to know some carrier settings which you may be able to get from their customer service.

The Nokia 6590 is only 1900 MHz according to Nokia's website. It won't work in China where they operate on 900 and 1800 MHz (like everywhere but the Americas). I suggest looking at either a Motorola P280, Ericsson T66/T68i or Nokia 6310i since all are tri-band. Good luck!
