Can I Load Games On My 8910?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: plut

I have a Audiovox CDM-8910 with Verizon service and I bought one of those Super CD's from ebay.

I have been able to load midi's and mp3's as ringers through bitpim.

I have like a hundred games that came on the Super CD but there were no instructions for loading them

So my quetions are.
1. Can I load games on my Audiovox 8910?

2. What folder do I put the games in on the phone?

3. How much storage space do these phones have? The mp3's seem pretty big even when I chop them down to like 20-25 seconds

4. Can I get free wap on this phone?

I'm sure I'll have more questions later but those should do for now.

1) With Bell phones you can, so it shouldn't be too different with Verizon phones. A guide will be put up shortly for Bell phones by mau108 and yours truly.

2) Not sure for Verizon, sorry.

3) About 5.25mb. Re-encode your mp3s to 48kbps at 20500. They come out around 175KB at this, and still sound pretty good.

4) Free WAP usuall uses your minutes. There are several threads on this. Try using the search feature of the board.

I thought bell was the same as telsus, which runs j2me. If your phone runs java apps its easly done with bitpim or the qualacomm software. Version uses Brew which is diffrent, and lots of people are still workin on how to transfer games to a brew system.

I made some progress with the VM 8910 and i overwritten jar and jad files and seen the game work, but the game was really big on the screen but i was using motorola v300 games, but the game has to be the same as you downloaded from vm. So can someone try to figure out how to get games on this phone.

Anybody, Know why I can't play .mid files ? Do I need a special plugin? Just get noise when I play them.

Is there a utility which will allow me to play phone java games on my.computer.
(to preveiw them and then decide if I want to install)

what about verizon, if u were to save the game and .mif file, could u put it on another verizon phone, itd be a small step towards maybe putting your own games on thtere since theres no MA directory or contentinfo file

this interests me greatly.

then we could all swap games....however, it is good to support the people developing the games....

it would be nice to do this to try a game out, but then go and purchase it if you like it.

Posted by: criddled456

i got sumo wrestling and chess. PM me with your e-mail we can trade some games to see if it works, i dont see why it wouldnt, unless the signature file has specific info in it that only works with the phone its on

Posted by: Cthecoolfrog

so verizion phoned do not run the same type of game file as virgin. i know that virgin runs jave. i would i be able to load verizion games onto my virgin mobile 8910.

On the guide you posted, it says the phone must be a bell. Then after the Setup section, it says:
Bell users click here
Alltel Users click here
Verizon users click here
My question is. If I have a Verizon phone, should I follow the setup procedures first, then click the Verizon Users link next, or will this setup procedure not work for my phone? I guess the first thing I need to do is buy the data cable. Do I need to buy one with software or does it not matter? Thanks for any help.

Posted by: blueadept

Yes, the setup would apply for you as well. No you do not need any software with the data cable. The website provides everything.

Posted by: kelpike

I am following the setup procedures, but my phone is not turning itself on automatically. Also, the Curitel packet is not showing up in my modem folder in the Device Manager. Just for the record, I am running Windows 98, and the phone is the 8910. Should I just turn the phone on and try acessing that way?

Posted by: blueadept

Turn on your phone, yes.

Posted by: kelpike

I tried adding an mp3 track and then a wallpaper and I got a an error message: An unexpected exception has occurred.
BrewNoSuchFileException: No such file Should I copy and paste the whole message or is anyone familiar with this problem?

Posted by: kelpike

Somehow I got a ringer on my phone but it won't play and I get a message on the phone saying that it can't be assigned. There is also a little red x across the name of the tone. Any Suggestions?

Posted by: blueadept

Were you both following instructions for verizon phones, not bell phones?

Posted by: kelpike

I was on the verizon link.

Posted by: criddled456

kelpike,

Posted by: criddled456

kelpike,

to put ringers on the verizon 8910, look here
http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=534753
Assign ringtones in the phone's settings! everyone seems to be asking why they cant assign ringtones, u do it just like u were assigning a regular ringtone.

Posted by: plut

I still can't figure out what folder load games into for a verizon phone. There is no "MA" directory or a "get it now" directory. I was gonna try downloading a free trial game from get it now to see where it puts them, but I somehow screwed up get it now on my phone and all I get is "network unavailable" when I try to access gin. Maybe somebody could try this and see what folder to put the games in. I got all kinds of games from this super cd and they have both the .jar and the .jad files, so all I have to do is find out where they go.

Just follow the steps in the Verizon link, ignoring everything else
I started this site for Bell users of the 8910, and from its popular demand and users requesting I post other provider methods, I have slowly started to integrate Alltel and Verizon methods

BUT NONE OF THOSE PROCEDURES HAVE BEEN TESTED BY ME, MOST OF THEM HAVE BEEN TESTED BY OTHERS BUT NOT BY ME, SO DONT ASK ME QUESTIONS ABOUT VERIZON AND ALTEL METHODS. :d POST EM HERE AND IM SURE SOMEONE WILL HELP YOU

Thanks

Posted by: plut

Thanks for that guide, I clicked on the verizon user part and it tells me how to load ring tones. but I already know how to do that. It makes no mention of where to put games. maybe I didn't look in the right place. let me know, thanks

Posted by: kelpike

I tried the Walmart/ Supermp3recorder method with no luck. And the Winamp method is way to confusing, I can't figure out how to get anything in that to start with. Can someone explain this step by step from start to finish in English. I can get the finished product onto the phone, but they always have the red x and the phone says it can't be assigned. I think my problem is somewhere in the beginning of the process.

Posted by: nhsoccerdude89

I know where to put the game files, contact me and i'll be happy to walk you through it. I have bitpim and an LG VX8000. I have put mp3's, pictures, and games on my phone. my AIM sn is Nhsoccerdude89. IM me and i'll help you. I DO NOT know WHERE to get the free games so please dont IM me if thats what you need. If you ALREADY have the game file, contact me and i'll help you put the games on your phone

Posted by: kelpike

I think my problem is in the converting of the file. When I take it off Walmart, I think its an MP3. But then somehow, when I put it on my phone, it is a wav file. I've tried to convert it and I can't figure out how to do that. Also, I've heard mention of renaming the file. How do you do that and how would that affect the transfer of the file?

Posted by: plut

kelpike , when you load a ringtone it has to be in .mp3 .mid or .qcp format. I also tried .wma and .wav I know they don't work. In order to convert the files from one format to the other you need sound editing software, ---> http://audacity.sourceforge.net

it's free I found it in another post hope it works

Posted by: kelpike

O.K., I was able to get the ringtone on the phone, however, it still cannot be assigned according to the phone. It also still has the little red x through it. Does anyone know why the phone will not let me assign the tone?

Posted by: hawaiian kine

already posted on other thread, but no response.

this message is mostly for plut.

wanted to find out if you had any leads on putting games on audiovox 8910 verizon.

where do the jar and jad files go (folder?).
using bitpim.

and where do you find the game on the phone itself.

if you have any clue, it probably will help a lot of people.

thank you,

hawaiian kine

Posted by: blueadept

I believe Verizon is BREW, meaning that it does not accept java games (jad and jars). I believe that nobody has yet to get games on a Verizon 8910 because of BREW.

Posted by: plut

hawiian, I haven't had any luck so far putting games on. One thing I'm going to try when I get my "get it now" fixed is to use bitpim and look at everything in my filesystem see whats there, then download a free trial game to my phone through "get it now" and then look at the filesystem again to whats changed and see where verizon puts it and also to see what type of files they are. I havn't been able to try this because every time I go to "get it now" I get network unavaliable (522). so I gotta take the phone to verizon and have them fix it.
If anyone wants to try this and let me know what the results were I have all kinds of games to try to load, I'll send you whatever you want. they are the .jar .jad kind.

Posted by: hawaiian kine

thank you for your reply!

verizon made it seem that we could download games to our phone.

BUMMER!

hawaiian kine

Posted by: hawaiian kine

everybody says that we can't download games to our phone!

verizon makes it seem so easy!

seems like only if you use verizon's get it now then we can get games on our phone.

thanks again for the shout out!

I hope this helps, here is a screen shot of my phones filesystem before and after I downloaded a game called "mindgames" it is a free trial so I'm sure one of the files is to deactivate the game when time expires. As you can see games are put in the brew directory, this one was labeled 13088 with three sub directorys being mindgames.bar, mindgames.mod and mindgames.sig then another directory named 13088.mif there was one other change to my filesystem was under the download directory a file named dlacks.bin was no longer present after I downloaded the game. maybe this will get us closer to being able to load games on this phone, or maybe we can download free trial games and take out the file that deactivates them.

Posted by: 69MakkeR

can you upload one of the games' jad/ jar files

or tell me a place where i can get them for free?

i want to try it out on my phone

Posted by: hawaiian kine

plut,

jad and jar (java) files do not apply to the software brew, we know that definitely now. so is there a way of finding these types of games around (the game that you downloaded) or is it possible to change something in the way the jad and jar files are written?

thanks for the info,

hawaiian kine

I have copied a game to my MA/Dir on my phone using BitPim and I renamed the game to 10.jar/10.jad
the question is where is the game on my phone or im I out in left field that is what the form sayes to do ~RIGHT~

Posted by: Naberius

Alright, since I see the same thing getting posted over and over, I wanna go through and condense as much as I've learned from all the forums I've seen, and from playing with my Vox 8910 (Cricket) myself. My Cricket has CricketClicks which is just their version of BREW, and I know Verizon has a version, and so on, so I'm pretty sure all the 8910's are similar, though my friend with an 8900 on Cricket doesn't have BREW, so it may be completely different.

As far as games go, the 8910, because it has BREW for downloading games, it supports BREW games, but not Jar/Jad games. Everyone who's going on about copying over their Jar/Jad files and trying to run a game, stop hurting yourself. Your phone won't recognize it, and prolly wouldn't know what to do with it if it did.

I've tried downloading free apps, looking at the file system with my data cable and QPTS, and reading other people's posts. What I've learned is that when you download an app/game from BREW, your phone creates a new directory for it under +/BREW on your phone, it's a numerically named dir, (no idea how it chooses the name) containing 3 files: *.BAR *.SIG *.MOD

Some apps also make another file for themselves for saving user-dependant data (aka, the Bible was the free app that I was using, had a *.txt file for saving favorite verses) (and yes, I know I'm going to hell for this).

Under the +/BREW directory, there's a *.MIF file that should have the same number as the directory that your app is in, I can only ASSUME this file contains the instructions that your BREW menu sees for listing the app on your BREW menu including app name, the little icon that it puts next to it, how long until it expires, and location of the app itself and initialization settings.

What I want to find out is if someone with an 8910 downloads an app (unlimited use) and uses BitPim or QPTS to save the *.MIF and the files in its corresponding directory, can someone else using the same software make an exact copy to their phone and get it to recognize, or is there some step I'm forgetting? Such as BREW having it's own file that needs to list the app to put it on the menu. I notice I have an app saved on my phone that doesn't seem to load up when I am on BREW. Also, it's very possible, if the writers of BREW gave us any credit on our ingenuity that downloading the game personalizes a file to the phone (by ESN or whatever) so it won't work on any other phone. I guess we need to experiment with this and find out.

If I'm wrong about any of this, let me know, and any input is appreciated, I've got rings and graphics on my phone no sweat and taught a friend to do it on his. Now it's just games and animations I'm worried about. But please if you respond to me, don't let it quote back my whole message, it bogs down the whole thread.

i bought tetris then used bitpm to save it off my fone along with the mif file so if anyone wants to try and put it on there phone just ask ps verzion user

Posted by: cdevlpr

I have 2 CDM-8910 phones...so I was able to do a little experimenting. Using BitPim...I backed up one of the game directories from the /Brew tree and I also made a copy of the .mif file that was in the /Brew tree.

The Game Directory was named 15800 and the single file was 15800.mif

Once these were transferred to the second phone, I went into the Apps section (menu-4-1). The app that i transferred did not appear in the list. I suspected this...because there is another file in the /Brew directory called config.txt That file appears to contain the menu information but...it will take more examining to understand its structure. Anyways...I turned off the phone...and then turned it back on to see if that would have any effect on the menu. It didnt...however...the surprising thing was that once i started BitPm back up and examined the /Brew directory...The directory and the single file that I had placed in it had been removed.

Thats as far as I have made it so far...Would sure be interested in knowing if someone else has figured this all out.

I have a Bell Mobility 8910.

I am scared to even TRY getting games loaded on to this baby.

Has anyone ever uploaded games to a Bell Mobility 8910?

Question of the year? I think not

I had followed those directions but to no avail.

Maybe it was just the particular game?

I am trying to find a 100% known working game for the 8910 on Bell... I have a CD from Ebay that came with my USB Cable... Has TONS of games, I just dont want to make a mistake...

Have you considered copying the .MIF, the directory for the app, and then opening the config.txt, taking out the line with the app's name and the hex codes that come before it and copying it, then opening the config.txt on the new phone, putting it in, and then saving it back to the phone? Then when you restart, the config.txt is correct with all the .MIF files there. I got this idea from trying to mess with ringtones on the 8900 in which you have to edit a file that links to the used files.

First off, make sure that you are with Bell, and your phone has a java file system. You can tell this if it has the same directories on the phone as outlined in the tutorial. No, you do NOT unjar the file before you put it on the phone. Just put the jad and jar directly on the phone. The rest is up to the phone.

For real?

Is there any way to know if a game will or will not work before hand?

Yesterday I had tried tetris. I uploaded the .jar, .jad (11.x) and my phone made a directory called 11 and all!

But, it did not show up as an avalible game.

I was so confused, and still am

Posted by: blueadept

Perhaps the information in the JAD was incorrect. Try opening it in notepad and comparing it to the 10.jad that you have. As well, some games are made for different incompatible phones. They vary in operating system, and screen size, so games will tend to screw up.

Posted by: zootzee

OK
I loaded a jar file the a jad file onto the phone ereased the content info
turned off the phone
and nothing there
I pugged it back in and expanded the ma directory and the content info was the same as the one I deleted and the jad and jar files were not in the directory any more
Try it again you say?
I did same thing, what's up with this?
Maybe the games are no good for my 8910?
If that is the case where can I get aleast one game I know will work?

Thank you

SWEET the block buster game from the site worked!!!

Where do I find these games at??

Posted by: mcfz

Here is a question.

What should a TYPICAL .JAD file contain? Are there certain "MIDlet*" lines that will have purpose while others don't?

What should a be within a TYPICAL .JAR? Only .class files?

Posted by: zootzee

Thats a good question because I have one of those famous super cd's. But every game I've tried doesn't seem to work. I get"I loaded a jar file the a jad file onto the phone ereased the content info
turned off the phone
and nothing there
I pugged it back in and expanded the ma directory and the content info was the same as the one I deleted and the jad and jar files were not in the directory any more"

Posted by: blueadept

The important things in the JAD file are: the name, the file size, and the type. The rest are not required as far as I can see. Thus far I know that there are 3 "types" that are within the JAD files: Ringtones, wallpapers, and games.

In the JAR, I don't believe this is a relevant question, because any game built for a cell phone has the required files. The only reason that it would not work would relate to the game being too big and the 8910 not being able to run it because it takes too much memory or processor time. Secondly, the screen size would be wrong. If you visit http://java.sun.com, there is more information on making cell phone games (I do not know the exact link).

Notice that the tutorial says BELL MOBILITY, and my provider says BELL MOBILITY. These are JAVA games. Verizon uses BREW games. These will not work for verizon users. The games that I tested so far are:

Amaio Ice Hockey [works]
1944 [doesn't work]
blackjack [works]
bomberman [works]
playmate [works]

You need to EDIT the .JAD

This is what I keep doing. The 10.JAD I got from vox8910.ca.tt I use as a "template"

Then I load the .JAD that come with the games

Edit them so they are "similar" to that of the one I had and upload...

No worries, When I get a full working load of games, I will make a zip

Posted by: zootzee

Simular?

I'll just wait to see your zip.

This thread originally started with someone trying to put games on their VERIZON 8910.
Then a bunch of people started talking about bell phones and java. But has the verizon question been answered? Has anyone been able to put games on their verizon 8910's yet? Can games be copied from one phone to another?
Has anyone made progress understanding config.txt?
Thanks

Well it looks like us Verizon users are out of luck. This tread is pretty old and so far we haven't gotten anyware when it comes to getting games on these phones. I think next time I get a new phone one of the factors will be the "hackabillity' of it.

I take it verizon people cant put games on there 8910? That link to that site that i saw about 5 million times on this thread does not work for me. Has anyone figured anything out for us verizon people????

I just downloaded a pack of about 200 games for my phone but i guess its a waste cause i cant use them...
