Price quote on a bumper... anyone can help?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

the story is.... I was in the stupid rental... in a parking lot, i hit into a snow bank and the bumper went in... I told the rental company and they quoted the price for the bumper to be fixed is $538.78.

it is a 2005 Black Cavalier... the front bumper.. the part under the fog light went in.. the paint on top is cracked..

I want to have a price quote reguarding it... or even a new bumper... before I actually pay them for it...

didn't get the insurance? bummer
I would really just call around asking body shops that are local to you.

I have insurance... the deuctible is $1000... =(

but I don't really want to claim them for that... just want check around for the price to see if they over charge me TOO MUCH... I don't mind they over charge me a bit as long as they don't tell my insurance company about that..

a whole new bumper primed is around $300 for that car... (just googled)
paint, $100-300...MAX... i think? (I've heard as low as $60 for a bumper)

so $540 is about right...

But, doesn't the rental company offer you insurance for a small nominal fee before you take the car?

basically is they transferred my policy onto the rental car cause my original car got written off...

It cost me more than that to paint mine. New bumper + paint came to around $1000. It does depend on where you go and what kind of quality you are looking for though.

I damaged a rental mini-van's bumper too, cost me near 1100$ to replace the stupid bumper, it wasn't even serious, just a 0.5cm hole and some scratches on the bumper and they want to replace the whole bumper and it cost me 1100$! The stupiest thing is that the deductible is 1250$ and the repair is 1100$!! That's mean even I totalled the mini-van, I only have to pay 1250$ and now I scrathed the bumper, I paid 1100$!!!

I was still young and stupid at that time, I should just paint the hole and the scratch in a cheap garage and return it as it is which will cost me 300$ at most.

Just paint your Cavalier bumper if it's not too serious, hope they don't see it, hehe

New bumper will cost you about few hundreds for sure with all the compnents inside the bumper (reinforcements, etc) + paint + labour + tax

assuming the actual bumper itself is not cracked- and only the paint is damaged,
you could do a quick "cheese" job.

here's what I mean...I've seen it done 1000s of times- I used to work for a national car rental, and the dude that came in to do repairs did an amazing job.

You can "pop out" the dent from the bumper.
take it to a shop that does "spot" repairs...what they do is sand down the area, "cheese" it (apply body filler, putty, etc.), prime it, and paint it on the spot...throw on a few coats of clear, and voila...it's ready for the auctions.

This dude would charge anywhere from $75-$100 jobber price. He worked out of a van, and would do the repairs in house...painting it right there in the open!

Again, if the bumper is not cracked, and just "dented" in and can be "popped" out, it's a $150 job..tops.

I've seen it done hundreds of times.
It's a crapalier after all...not a viper.

if u work in the auto repair industry, you will know where to find bumpers for $150, and get them painted for $50. trust me. Someone I knew, hooked me up with my rear bumper. $200 for an SVT bumper, painted and installed. Ford charges $600 unpainted, and another $200 for paint, talk about deal.
