What about the CDM-8940?

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

If you look at the thread for the VX8000, you see a huge FAQ with a ton of details on how to do things already. Yet as far as I can tell this is the First post even mentioning the 8940.

I'm no phone genius or anything, and I've been coming to this board to get the smart/interesting people's tricks. So where are they?

By the way, a short review of this phone:

I went with it over the 8000 because of the size factor.

Pros:
Size is comfortable.
The menu is great. (I'd say just as intuitive and nice as the 8000, which everyone seems to rave about).
I don't understand why people are calling the build quality weak or crappy - i think it's really fine. I don't feel like i'm going to crush it or anything (not that i could if i tried?)
The pictures have been good so far - the video too

Cons:
From what i hear the mini SD is crippled (also it shows some of this within the manual itself). Looks like you can save photos, vid, etc. to the card, but it doesn't look like you'll be able to move much from the card to the phone (especially in instances of wallpaper, ringtones).
The camera position isn't in the most desirable place, but it's quick to get used to nonetheless.

The 8000 i tested had a volume at least twice as loud as this phone on speaker and rings.

I *still* might take it back and get the 8000 because it seems like there are more hacks available to do the things you want, and i don't know if i can live with my ringers/speakerphone being this quiet.

I like the size, i like the style. Wish i could pump up the volume.

Anyway - let me know about YOUR thoughts and any tricks you might have for A) putting mid or mp3 as ringtones from websites or something, B) How to get wallpapers from the web and put it as the phone C) how to set shortcuts (or favorites) using Mobile Web, D) how to make it so the picture caller ID comes on the outside of the phone rather than just only the inside.

Bye!

So far not sure...one day.

Size is a 'tweener--not as small as I would like but not huge like 8000.

Speakerphone starts buzzing at level 4 and awful at level 5.

Wallpaper and graphics suck. I don't want cutesy crap on a phone I use for business...galactic swirls and pastel colors (puke).

Camera? Eh, don't care about....

Phonebook better than Samsung's

Screens nice.

Backlight on keypad is adequate but why isn't the red "End" key lit? Or is mine defective?

so far in the 1 full day i have had it been able to

1) use the sd card to upload mp3s and play them (not as ring tones, but using the phone as an mp3 player)
2) sent an edited mp3 to myself vix pixmail and can use it as a ringer

i havent messed w/ the cam much, i was having tons of problems w/ the sd card no wanting to work, just a little note, you cant transfer files to the sd card via a mac, it just wont work.

im waiting for someone to confirm that you can use the data part of the phone (via a usb cable)as a modem for my laptop. it has to happen, its running the same network as the cards, you just have to know what to dial.

I have an edited mp3 (midi) on my phone, but I don't know how to assign it as a ringtone. I see no option for this anywhere. Can you explain in detail how you were able to do this? Thanks in advance for your help.

I had the same problem too, then I figured it out. When you save the ringer to your phone, it should appear in your Tones section of Media Gallery.

Now go to: Settings. Sounds. Ringer Type. Ringer. Now you will be in the default section called Music Bells. Use the left and right keys (on either side of the OK button) to go to different ringer categories. There is : Music Bells, Ring Tones, and Downloads. Your saved ringtone which you downloaded should be under the Downloads section. Now all you have to do is highlight the ringer you want and hit OK to apply it is your ringtone. Good luck

got it ,thanks. now i also sent a wallpaper and it worked as well.i hate paying for midi or cheap mp3 ringtones so sending them is so much better.now what about sending videos? can it be done? and how long can they be? has anyone hacked any farther into this phone yet?like changeing the led patterens on the outside that change color when it rings?

I'm curious if anyone knows if it will be possible by either Verizon or some sort of hack in the future to get the photo ID to appear on the front screen. Would that be a firware update, or actually the phone hardware unable to do it? Also being able to change the wallpaper on the front screen would be nice.
I've read that we will be able to update firmware over the airwaves and not actually have to take it to a tech support center and hand it over to them. That would be nice, when they get a newer version available.
