what do you use to make homescreens.. i downloaded some homescreen designer and it only let me open it like 9 times it was a demo..ive searched and i cant find one im happy with...

A lot of folks are using Microsoft's Theme Generator, available on the MS site. It was made for Smartphone 2002 but it works for 2003 as well. Only it doesn't transfer the themes automatically -- you have to do that.

Hahaha i need some of those, apps these day are just too **** expensive. Buying like 5 quality apps could run you anywhere between $125 - $150 these days.

if you travel, Fizz Traveler is a must! I live by it now, with the awesome alarms, weather forcasts in 6 different cities, currency converter and even a place to put your Itenary!!

Also, if you want a GREAT remote viewing tool, look at Soti Pocket Controller http://www.soti.net/default.asp?Cmd...ts&SubCmd=PCPro

Way better then the remote access that comes with the power tools.

If you want free you should xml. All you have to do is make your own homescreen but writing some codes. Search HF for treads about homescreens and you'll find all the links you need to learn xml codes.

I use an html/xml text editor (NOT a WYSIWYG editor) and directly edit the .home.xml file. There are a couple of web pages that describe the format of the homescreen XML. Not everything is documented but by examining existing homescreens as well as the homescreen XML that Ruttensoft's HomeScreen Designer generates, I've managed to get my screens pretty much they way I want them... just not enough hours in the day.

can u post a better image of those mushrooms... so that the height of the image is 220 pixels or more... otherwise... if i stretch the image... it will not be as clear!

You only need extra SW if the homescreen uses a special plugin (like the Battery & Memory percent on Speed Racer's). Otherwise, it's just the background image and the XML file that you need to put into "\Storage\Application Data\Home". You can find some homescreens that you can download on the website in my signature.

I would just PM him to ask what he used. The plugin text looks to be pretty close to the Windows Default, but his color scheme looks to be one he made.

Having been born and raised in NYC, and witnessing the OPENING of the Twin Towers and having plenty of family still in NYC, I can understand wanting a 9/11 tribute.

I can tweak it a bit to have the color scheme match. I design my homescreens so that all that is needed is the .home.xml and the .jpg background image. You would take these two files and place them in the appropriate directory on your phone.

I use two non-standard plug-ins... RJShortcuts and SmartMonitor.

Do you want a version of the homescreen without those? (maybe replace RJShortcuts with the standard MRU plug-in?)

ok, i tried to do a search for rjshortcus and smartmonitor, but couldnt find out to much info on them...would you be able to tell me what they are, and how i would go about getting them....I dont want to pay a fortune on a plugin, so if they are expensive just drop them all together...

and honestly thank you soooo much, i really do apreciate it...

ok,i just installed rjshortcuts directly to my phone, as i dont have a mini sd card yet (freekin expensive for the 512mb one i want). now when i click it on my phone my homescreen tuns red, and there is the normal top row of big icons, and then there is a row of little icons as well. have i dont anything wrong or is that the way it normally looks before it gets the xml code

- two slightly different h2g2 hme files (theme only)

- one h2g2 xml homescreen file with many plugins (u have to edit and remove the ones u dont want or add more)

- three internal homescreen backgrounds

- one external lcd background

Well, here it is with the optional plug-ins. I suggest getting them because they really add functionality to it.



FDNY homescreen ZIP

To install this homescreen, download the ZIP file. Unzip it to your desktop PC. Then with the phone attached to your PC and ActiveSync connected, drag-n-drop the fdny.home.xml and fdny.jpg files into the \Storage\Application Data\Home directory on your phone.

Then go into Start -> Settings -> Homescreen and select FDNY. Make sure that both background and color scheme are set to "Default". (this will ensure that the image and colors defined within the fdny.home.xml are used).

Enjoy!

ok, well i just installed it. Vmail has some long *** number that completly overlaps the word email. Also alot of the icons that i have, have question marks, is that because i dont have smart monitor yet...

ah. Those question marks are for apps that you don't have installed on your phone.

I've made an update for you to try. Download fdny2.home.xml and place it in the same directory as the other files.
I've updated the links to only include standard apps. I've also removed the email indicator.

When I copy the XML file to "storage\Application Data\Home" and choose it from the home screen menu (yes, it shows up), I get the following error on the acutal homescreen ..

"No home screen layouts can be found. Install a valid home screen layout and then select it using the Home Screen item in settings"

This is what I did ... Any Ideas???

i have NO idea!!

unless u want to actually change your homescreen to include all the plugins and the same format that i have, you dont need the full xml file. just use the theme installer (the hme file).

the xml is only for people who want to use the same layout i have.

the hme changes the colors and the background without messing with your homescreen layout.

I dont mean to ask you anymore questions about it, because you have already done so much for me, but i have one more question for you. remember beforee when i said there was numbers overshooting the email. well i think it was because i had a voicemail. but there was literally like 10 numbers. I am running the phone with an ATTWS firmware, so that could be the problem. And i also now have one icon with a question mark, is there anyway that i can assign something to that question mark, like connected bits weather, or agile messanger, etc... also do you know where i can get smart monitor from, because i really like the way the homescreen looks with the battery, and memory meeters...

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you like it! I'm running with the ATTWS firmware as well, but my phone is the Audiovox SMT-5600, so there may be a difference in that.

As for the shortcuts, you can change those yourself with a little work. Load the fdny2.home.xml file in a plain text editor (like NotePad) and go to the "shortcuts" section....

That was what I really wanted to do ... have my screen look like yours. I installed the plugins that you had in the XML file (except Fizz) ... but now I am stuck.

Sracer-Thanks, best 9-11 tribute screen I have seen. One question, did this download include the shortcut plug in? When I installed only the Smartmonitor plug seems to be working. (and yes I do have the rjshortcut plugin installed )

wow, thanks! Yes that homescreen requires both SmartMonitor and RJShortcuts.

Ok, I have installed both and still no icons, all I seem to have is the monitor, profile, mail indicator and appointment showing. No shortcuts at all. I will retry and see what happens.

Does the sample RJShortcuts homescreen work on your phone? If so, I wonder if there is a slight variation in how it is defined on your phone.

Compare the plug-in clsid entry for RJShortcut defined in my FDNY homescreen with the one that is in the sample RJShortcut xml. Maybe that is the difference.

Fixed it. On my phone the setting had to be FDNY for home screen layout and FDNY in the background image for the shortcut to work. Both in the Homescreen option menu incase someone else runs into the same issue.

Ok thanks to everyones input i finally done it
But now i have problems with the battery going dead alot faster!!
Before i didnt then i installed RJ and SM now i do and as im messing with the phone within 5mins it went from 93% to 81% WOW.. IS this happeing to anyone else.. Or just me!!!

Ok, i did what you said and i wanted to mess around with it a bit, but when i save the file it gets saved as a txt, not xml and it is not listed on my phone as a home screen layout... how do i save the file as an xml file. BTW i used notepad to try and edit it.

Yep, that worked. Just need to do a little more tweaking after work and I should be all set. One more thing though, I don't like ClearType, can I just remove the Cleartype line for Font Quality and it will be fine, or do I need to put some other augment in there?

if u dont mind spending a little money, or if you have the time to search this forum thoroughly... you should try and get a software called batterypack pro. it is like a combination of of RJ monitor and RJ shortcut. it also comes with a homescreen plugin for system monitor. im not sure if rj shortcut and monitor are better then bp pro but i personally use bp pro and i like it.

Thanks, but that's not what I meant. It's an entry in the XML file, not the one in the registry which makes everything cleartype. All set now however. Just took out the line about cleartype in the XML file and it worked fine.

Heres all i do.. Take the file your going to Edit.. put it on your desktop Right click on File go to Edit.. Do what ever you have to do then just press SAVE.. thats it .. File is Edited...Hope that helps..

P.S Do not Save As!!! Just Save..!!!

in Notepad go to File, Save As: nameofthefile.home.xml Make sure you add the .home.xml extention to the file name and it will save it as a XML file.

your file name should look like yourfilename.home.xml

Yea usally its that easy.. But like myself i didnt have the extension in my notebook .. so i just pressed save and it worked.. Things so simple but Yet so hard to undertand

First and foremost going forward, always make a backup copy before making any edits, that way if you mess up you can always go back and start from scratch! Why do you have the extra "<shortcut" after the "target" line? All I did is take the original FDNY XML file and erase the things that I didn't have on my phone and input the ones I did. Worked just fine. Yeah, you can put 9 shortcuts the way it's setup now. That's what I have. Remove that extra >shortcut and you should be fine.

Actually, just took a closer look at your post. The Calculator program is in the Accessories folder, so your syntax should be:

target="\Storage\Windows\Start Menu\Accessories\Calculator.lnk"/>

Try that and I bet it works!

You have to look in the \Storage\Windows\Start Menu\ and find the link you want to include in the XML file and then type the link exactly as it is in there.

Ok, I just tried switching the Hitchhiker wallpaper and things aren't being displayed correctly. So do I take it that I need to edit the xml file to match the new wallpaper? Also, where do you copy the external pictures to display on the outside LCD?

Engine i understand your pain;.. My Vmail also has a ten Digit read out when a voice mail comes in but

The way to figure out the spacing is where it says <text x="120">SMS:</text> the #120 represents where the space is.. so if you look back at the original settings i think there spaced as vmail 30 email 60 and Sms 120 thats the spacing.. so you can work from there.. so maybe just email and sms would maybe be like Email 40 SMS 80

Hope this helps as im still trying to figure out why the vmail comes up 10 #'s :doh

thanks, i dont know maybe i need to mess around with it some more, but i dont understand why i cant get a number next to the Email after messin with it, grrrrrrr maybe i will just deleate the origional Vmail icon and change the spacing of the origional email....

Yes, it will give you that error if the XML file has the code for a plugin that you don't have on the phone, in my case smartmoniter, so I deleted the plugin code and it worked fine, I also change the colors as well and used a custom .scheme.xml file I made.

This is the result:

Eyeless: to change the start up and shut down logos you need to edit the registry.

This is the key you need to edit.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Splash Screen
Change: CarrierBitmap, CarrierShutdownBitmap, and/or MSBitmap to any 176x220 GIF or JPG file of your choice, or leave it blank for nothing at all.

ok i pretty much have this FDNY Homescreen how i want it. but i think that i would like to take it to the next leval, in two ways and i need your guys help. ok now where i have MMS, Email, and SMS, when you go to highlight it, it highlights the whole line. and then when you click on it, brings you up to another page to click on what you want. is there a way to change the homescreen so it will highlight each individual item and when you click on it, it will bring you to that exact item. now the second thing that i would like to know is once i have this xml file the way that i want how can i use it to make a new homescreen, and how would i go about making new pics for the backround and changing the color scheme

make a .scheme.xml file to make a custom scheme that you can use with any home.xml file....meaning if you have the FDY.home.xml file and you don't like the colors but you want to make a custom color scheme that you can use with any future .home.xml file you make then you need to make a .scheme.xml file

have fun and this will take time. Its very involved but not hard to understand. You can do alot with XML, there is even a section where you can make your own apps for the phone, which is what I am going to start doing next.

anyways it looks very very complicated to actually make the xml file. to me it looks very very involved, but after work tommorow i am going to sit down and try to understand it fully. i started to read through that first guide on dchesters site and started to get into the colors with the hexadecimal's and i have to say i didnt really understand it. this is what he says about finding the color that you want in paint:

Colour Codes
The next section sets the colours used by the phone- not just for the Homescreen, but also for the Programs menu, the softkeys at the bottom of the phone, and the colours used by most applications. (You may find that some applications use colour codes that aren’t immediately obvious- for example, when looking at the Monthly view in the Calendar, the colours are set by the colours of the softkeys.)

The colours are coded in hexadecimal. That is, a numbering system that has 16 digits from 1 to F, instead of just 1 to 9 (ie; 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, C, D, E, F, 10,11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 1A, 1B, 1C etc.) Having extra numbers coming between 9 and 10 take a little bit of getting used to (as does the pronounciation- is 1A "A-teen?"), but is really quite simple to deal with once you've got your head round the concept. You might find it useful to create a list or spreadsheet with the "normal" decimal and hexadecimal numbers for converting between the two.

There are 6 digits in the hexadecimal colour codes used by the phone, which work in pairs and correspond to the Red, Green and Blue values (as any colour can be made up of a combination of the three primary colours.) The first two digits refer to the Red component, the second two to the Green, and last two to the Blue. And because the two digits are hexadecimal, that means there are 255 possible values (if they were in boring old decimal, you’d only have 100…) So, for example, #FF0000 would be pure red, #0000FF would be pure blue, #FFFFFF would be white, #000000 would be black.

You’ll probably find that the "pure" colours look slightly unnatural- for example, if you find #FF0000 (for example) to be too bright for whatever you're after, then bring the code a bit closer to black. As black is #000000, just bring down the "FF" part of the code- for example, you could try dropping it to "A0", so the code would be #A00000. If it's too dark, then bring the other values up to bring it closer to white- for example, #FFA0A0 would be a light pink.

(It's worth noting that these colours don't mix in the way you are probably used to- that is, the way paint mixes- this is because the colour of a paint is determined by the light it absorbs, whereas with these colours, you're effectively mixing the actual light itself.)

If you’re trying to find the code for a specific colour- for example, if you're trying to make your colour scheme match with a colour from your background image- but you don't want to spend hours tweaking colour codes, then it’s no problem;

2) Zoom in (so that you can be sure you’re going for the exact pixel you want to match the colour of), select the "dropper" tool, and click on the colour you’re after.
3) Then go into the "Colors" menu, and select "Edit Colors", and click on "define custom colours." The colour you’ve selected will be the one that comes up, and the Red, Green and Blue component values will be displayed on the bottom right hand side- just convert these values to a hexadecimal number (explained above) and put them into your colour code.

One final colouring tip- if you want your colour scheme to be used by other people, then avoid using Red and Green on each other (eg. red text on a green background) as that is the most common pair of colours that colourblind people (like me...) have in distinguishing from each other.

as you can see he doesnt go into great detail about it. i mean i like the fact that he is saying if you are lookin for an exact color like from a picture that you are working with, that you can just use the paint program that is on every windows pc. but i really dont understand how he expects one to convert those number to a hexadecimal...

Dont worry bout that, just use standard color codes, you can find a list of them on the internet somewere. You only need to worry about that if you want to make a custom color but chances are someone has already made it.

yda h have found a bunch of great hex color swatches on the net and i have been going nuts and expermentinh with them. the next thing after this that i want to mess around with is the layout. that part just seems like it is going to be a big pain in the you know what

Or you could use homescreen designer by ruttensoft to layout the colors you want and where you want your plug ins and then take that XML file it generates it and tweak it to your likeing. That will save you alot of time.

Go download the free Microsoft Smartphone Theme Generator. Design your color scheme (you can even include the background image of your choice). Then "BUILD".

Don't install the.hme to your phone, but Right-Mouse-Button click on the .hme and select "Extract". It will create a new folder on your PC and in that folder will be the .jpg for the background and the .xml for the color scheme. Load the scheme.xml in Notepad (or your favorite editor) and swipe-and-copy the < scheme > ... < /scheme > section and paste it into your home.xml (overwriting the existing < scheme > section.

This method is by far the easiest and fastest way to get the colors you want.

ok, well that was much easier to pic the color theme that i wanted, but when i click on my theme it gives me no option to extract the files... what am i doing wrong... all i have is an icon that looks like a phone and when i right click on it, all i have is the standard options

and after i do all of this, i know that i am definatly going to want to tweak it a lil more... now that i know how to change the xml for that section myself

Ok, i did what Sracer said to do by using windows theme generator to make a new theme for the phone. and i saved it to my computer. It is a .hme file. Sracer told me to take that file, right click on it and hit extract to get the .xml file. the only problem is when i right click on it, extract is not an option, and i can not find it is a menu option either. so i dont know how to get the .xml file from it.

any clues???

i dont have about 1/4 of those options available to me, and i am using windows xp.

if i knew how to freeze from like you and post it, i would, but this is what i have available:

Open
Send theme to device
open with >
scan with norton anti virus
send to >
cut
copy
create shortcut
delete
rename
properties

and thats it

You need to have winRAR installed on your computer. Do a google search for it and you will see those options.

BTW I am running Windows XP as well...just hacked and modded like crazy!

grrrrrr i am getting frustrated. i downloaded winrar the freeware version, cuz i am not droping 30 bucks on it. and now the it has added the following options:

add to archive
add to fire.rar
compress and email...
compress to fire.rar and email

i still dont have the extract hme

what exactally am i doing wrong

I don't know why you don't have those options, do you have WinZip installed as well? If you don't you can try WinZip and see if that gives you that option.

well i think that i am about to start to agree with you on this one. that theme generator thing was just such a pain in the butt to figure everything out, and then when i finally did figure it out, the color scheme was slightly different than what i had chosen to begin with. like i had set the start key to yellow, and the contacts key to red. and when i finally had transfered them to my phone, both of them were yellow.

So in conclusion i think that i am just going to go nuts and mess with the code, that way i can get everything just the way that i want, because i am anal about that kinda stuff.

Yes! That's it! Just right-click and select Extract to...\. It will extract the 3 files and put them in their own folder. Now follow the instructions that I beleive were posted earlier in the thread on how to put them in the right place on the phone.

yea i did that and transfered it to my existing fdny.home.xml file. but the strange thing is that the color scheme was a little off here and there... i think i just like doing the code better that way i get it just the way that i want

Yes, you can put the .hme file on your phone and open it via File Manger or extract the .home.xml and .scheme.xml files and put them in Storage\Windows\Application Data\Home

ok it seems a bunch of people are having trouble getting the colors they like... so i thought this software might be of help... its called kamware thememaker sp... and it has auto-color feature... u give it the background image and it will automatically generate the best color scheme for that picture. neat ah?? its not free though. but check it out.
