Curious about the Cingular branded Treo 650? So was I.

I tried the phone over the weekend and to be honest it was a nightmare. First and foremost let me start by giving it it's accolades for email and pda functionality. Simply put this portion of the device was stellar. BUT, as a phone this thing was atrocious. I could place outgoing calls fine, but the unit did not search the phone book when entering the first few characters of the name. I had to manually find the contact each time. Maybe this is user error but it was certainly not an intuitive process. Secondly, Blazer is not ready to compete against IE in any mode. True, there are better browsers for the Palm but why should I have to pay. Finally, and this was the killer: Each time I received an incoming call and selected answer call from the home screen the phone spontaneously rebooted. After resetting the phone the problem still occurred. As a result of my much less than ideal introduction to PalmOne and their Treo 650 the phone is boxed and ready to go back. I simply await the RMA number. In the meantime I am now very happy to return to my MPx220.

This recounts one man's encounter and your mileage may vary.

Edit: Corrected several typos

There is a menu option to enable "find by name" as one enters the number from the phone screen.

I have the Sprint version, and do not have the issue with the unit resetting. I wonder if your was defective. I'm leaning toward it being defective, as they couldn't possibly sell these things if that happened consistently across every unit.

I have the MPx220 (and SMT5600). I do like the Smartphone OS as well. But when it comes to composing email, etc., the Treo (as you noted) is top-notch.
