Danger's Hiptop makes it easy to stay connected!
Review by Rizwan Malik on Sunday October 13, 2002.

Danger's Hiptop (aka T-Mobile Sidekick) was recently released by T-Mobile - a device that everyone has anxiously been waiting for a long time. It one of the most exciting gadgets ever released and just might change the whole 'wireless' term from now on. This is the first device I've so far used which gives the feeling of 'being wireless'. This modern device combines wireless data applications and a phone in an innovative swivel form factor targeted at mass-market consumers. The device's operating system provides a stylish, user-friendly interface. The unit includes a large grayscale display, GPRS high-speed data, a full e-mail client, built-in USB, and a full web browser. Hiptop is the least expensive device in the market for all the functions it offers. It costs only $200 with $40 monthly plan, which gives unlimited data usage for one year. I tried the hip-top (sidekick) for a while and I liked it. However, the reason I did not keep it was the way all your information must be on Danger's server someplace. Where is it? In Malaysia or Las Vegas? While I thought it was cool the way you could go to a website and set up your HipTop, view your mail, sync your contacts, etc. It also bothered me that all this information was in the hands of a third party that I did not know. This includes: every email message you send and receive, every web search you do, and all the phone numbers and addresses of everyone in your contact list. That was too much trust for me, and that was the reason I did not go with HipTop. In addition, the closed OS, and very closed network was another negative. I ended up with a P800 and I love the way you can download tons of applications, and the phone is unlocked so I can put in a SIM from any network.
