How to Configure Unlocked 650 on Cingular

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

My unlocked 650 is scheduled to arrive via FedEx on Monday. I'm currently on Cingular (with Media Works) and plan to drop my current SIM directly into the unlocked 650.

I understand that it will configure the phone fuctions automatically.

However, what about data (internet, WAP, SMS, etc.)--> do I need to know any settings for the phone in order to configure it? Will it automatically configure? Is there a web-site to configure it if I need to do so?

Just trying to hit the ground running on Monday. Any tips?

Thank you.

When you put your SIM in, the 650 will automatically configure your text messaging, MMS, and Web for you.

you sure about that? hmmmmm interesting.. anybody else can vouch for it? sorry ijitsu dont want to imply anything but my unlock 600 i had to get settings for it.. and assume the 650 would be too...

my experience with the unlocked 600 and my provider, t-mobile, was that t-mobile sent the information to the phone. I didn't have to make any settings on the phone. Cingular might just have to send the info to your phone if it's not configured automatically. I too am awaiting my 650 and presume it will be the same.

My experience with my unlocked T616 was painful when I switched to Cingular (from AT&T) SIM. I had to call Cingular and spend over an hour on the phone on hold and typing in commands. I'm hoping that won't happen again.

I'm hoping that the Treo 650 experience won't be the same.

Can anyone confirm (without purely speculating) how it will work? After putting in the SIM is everything data-wise automatic? (i.e., Cingular just sends the instructions automatically?) Or do I have to call them? Or something else?

Not to cast doubt on folks, but my guess is that configuring the 600 and the 650 may be different. Does anyone have actual experience with an unlocked 650 on cingular?

The provider does not need to send anything. The Treo is configured with the data settings for the various providers and applies the one that corresponds to the SIM you insert.

Fantastic. Thank you.

Curious: Is there a name for that type of phone? (i.e., EIN capable or something similar?)

Thanks again.

Not sure. The treo is the only phone I've used that automatically filled in that info. Any other phone unlocked phone I've had to do it myself. Kudos to Handspring/Palmone.

Also expecting an unlocked Treo 650 from Palmone, using my Cingular sim card. Will there be Cingular welcome screens, or some sort of palm one?

I received my unlocked Treo 650 today from palmOne -- turned it on, inserted the SIM, it searched for, found Cingular's network within about 15 seconds, and, WALA, everything was configured 100% correctly. Perfect, couldn't have been easier.

Have you tested all the data features as well?

You have to go to Cingular web site and register for your own user id and password.

This isn't technically correct. You only have to do this if you want to access the Cingular ME site using the Treo. My wife and I both have the Treo 650 GSM (unlocked using Cingular). I registered, she did not. There's absolutely no difference in functionality.

Thanks for the info. Hopefully I'll be testing mine today =)
