Mpx220 Mp3 ringtone

(Click here to view the original thread with full colors/images)

Posted by: VBprograM

I tried making one ofmy ring tones a mp3 but it wasnt successful. I put it in the sound directory in storage, it showed up on rings but gave me a beep. Do I need toconvert it to .wav or shorten the ring tremendously?

Posted by: jim138

no you shouldnt have to shorten it but if you want it loud and sounding well i would convert it to wma, they sound waaaay better and louder

Posted by: mag300

What program do you use to create your own mp3 ringtones? I see a couple of programs available online and I don't mind purchasing one. I have had my MPx 220 for a couple of days now and I see there is a learning curve about using it. I'm at the bottom right now.
Thanks.

You don't need any special software to make your MP3's ringtones. Just copy the MP3s to your cellphone memory and that's it. As far as the lenght of the MP3, don't worry about it because the phone will play it for the duration of the ring setting. (I believe it's 20 seconds. You can change it to 30 though).
Also, if you set a MP3 file as a ring tone, the sound will be low. You need to convert the MP3 file to WAV and it will sound way louder. There is free software that will convert the files for you. I use "Windows Media Encoder".
Hope this helps.

Posted by: Omega2008

My mp3 ringtones sound loud, could this be because I incode them from midi files to mp3, i did this to save space on my v600 but i left them midi's on my old MPx 200 because it wouldn't play mp3 ringtones.

If you do it like this, you will always get the first 20-30 seconds of a song.

I dunno about you, but thats not always the part of the song that I want to be my ringer.

Also, if you take a 192kbs mp3, thats around 5 megs. Why would you need to waste that much space?

Cut it down to what you want, and save it as 32kbs/22-44khz.

Posted by: SmarthPhoneGuy

Hey DOHCrasy is there a software to cut the song so it plays the part you want? If there is one, would you mind telling me where to find it because that would be perfect. Doing it the way I explained above, the phone will play the first 30 seconds of the song, and that's not usually the best part.

Yes, there is. For me, I've been using "Sonic Foundry Sound Forge 6.0" for a while and it is so simple to use.

I don't know where to d/l it though.

Free converter (MP3,WAV,WMA)
http://www.dbpoweramp.com/dmc.htm

Free MP3 Editor
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

I would encode them for your phone with WMA9Pro @ 64kbps or 32kbps.

Posted by: mag300

Thanks for the discussion. I will experiment a little now.

Posted by: mag300

I ended up using Goldwave to create the file, then I saved it to a WMA file with dBpowerAMP. I chose the wma format because from what I have read, the the wma file may produce a louder ring. I don't know for sure if this is right or not. I was able to play the file in windows media player and it sounds fine. Then I copied it over to the MPx220 windows file, but the phone doesn't recognize it as a ringtone nor does it show up in the audio file. It is listed when I expand the windows listing.

I used a file that I had originally copied from a CD and had converted to an mp3. I only saved about a minute of the music under a new file name in the mp3 format.

I converted the file using using the dbpowerAMP to the WMA 9.1 codec. Should I have used the WMA9 codec instead or does that even matter? The file extension is .wma. The compression is: 64 kbps, 48kHz, stereo 1-pass CBR. The file size is 556KB.

I'm sure I have done something wrong. Could someone please give me a suggestion.

Both Goldwave and dBpowerAMP are interesting programs, by the way.

Thanks in advance.

Posted by: DOHCrazy

Your converting it to to high of a compression.

Try 9.1, 32kbs, 44khz, Mono, WMA

Also, in goldwave, there is a button (hover over them to find it), that controls volume. Click that, and set it to 200%. The mpx wont have any trouble with the added volume. The speaker is a great speaker, its the software that makes it suck.

Posted by: jleecong

Just for reference and testing here are some of my ringtones.

http://wap.x2-hosting.com/downloads/Ringtones

Posted by: mag300

First, I appreciate the help I have received so far.

I was able to get the MPx220 to recognize the wma files as a ringtone, but not each time. If I modified a file, I sometimes get a message there is a problem with the ringtone. The larger hurdle now appears to be the ringtones are not loud enough for me to hear in most environments. I have the profile set to "outdoor" and I doubled the volume to 200% as suggested.

I will keep working on it, but again I am somewhat stymied. I loaded a couple of JLee's files and they are too quiet as well. I also notice the "dog barking" wav included with the phone is a little quiet. Other midi files resident on the phone are loud enough to be heard.

If you have any more suggestions, I will appreciate your help. If you are tired of working on this problem, no problem.

Thanks.

Those ringtones are for my 5600. They have NO increased volume as the SMT5600 doesn't have the volume issue that the MPx220 has.

I will try one of my tones on my girls MPx220 to see how it sounds. Have you done the volume hack?

Posted by: mag300

I wasn't aware of a volume hack, but it sounds like what I may need. Is there a good place to find this? I will search later when I get a little time. Does this program get involved with earpiece volume also? I notice the volume through the earpiece doesn't go as high as I am used to. Part of the problem is I have tinnitus and everything has to be louder than what I hear 24 hours a day. The volume on the Nokia I just got rid of was fine in all areas.

Thanks again.

Posted by: medenblik

I didn't think anyone has found a volume hack yet

If so Please post here

Posted by: jleecong

I pulled the hack from these forums. They were more complete but I only set the following values.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InC all]
"AttenuationCategory"=dword:00000002
"InitVol"=dword:00000005

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Rin g]
"AttenuationCategory"=dword:00000002
"InitVol"=dword:00000005

Finding the right volume balance, then converting it to the propper speed of wma, then converting it to my phone is like way too complicated. Exactly which volume setting in goldwave are you supposed to change. When I crank either of them to 200%, I get some distortion, and unfavorable quality loss. Then sometimes, converting it to a phone compatible wma speed is just a hassle.

For the mpx220 I did 3 things.

1) Download sample song from Walmart Music.

2) Convert using dbpoweramp (Just right click the MP3 and convert)

3) Copy to phone

With the volume on LOUD some songs distort, simple songs play very loud. I'm using the volume hack.

Posted by: mag300

It sounds like you have it figured out jleecong. I, however, am unsure about editing the registry.

I contacted Motorola by email and asked customer support if they plan to fix the volume issue or if they expected people to edit the registry themselves.

While the phone has a lot of potential, failure of Motorola to respond to an important issue like this may cause me to return it within the 30 days I have from Cingular. I told them this.

Even so, I intend to try to figure out how to do the registry editing.

Thanks.

Posted by: mag300

I heard back from Motorola customer support. They neither confirmed nor denied a problem with the volume. They did say they are unaware of anything that can be done to the registry to improve the volume of the handset. So I sent them back JLee's fix.

I think is may be worthwhile for as many people as possible to email Motorola to suggest there may be a problem with the volume. Maybe it would even be a good idea to include the volume hack so one of the brighter technicians can actually try it.

They suggested I take the phone to a Motorola authorized service center so a technician can tell me if there is a problem with the volume. There is one about 50 miles from here.

Posted by: mag300

jleecong,

I was able to open the registry on the MPx220 with a program named Mobile Registry Editor. My values on (Ring) for Attenuation Category =2 and InitVol=5. The (InCall) values are 2 and 3 respectively. The lead in zeros as you posted are not listed on my device. Are these necessary? I tried to change the 3 to a 5 but the program would not let me edit. Could it be a read-only file?

The program is designed to run from your computer so it doesn't have to be loaded on the phone.

Thanks in adance.

Posted by: jleecong

This is a installer to fix the volume problem. (Ringer and InCall)

http://wap.x2-hosting.com/downloads/VolumeFix.CAB

This isn't a program like most cab files. This CAB edits the 4 registry keys I posted above to the values I posted above.

It will create a new entry in the Add/Remove Programs menu called "Volume Fix" you can uninstall the fix if you don't like it.

It also creates a directory called volume fix in the program files directory with a txt file that describes the cab file.

I tested this on my MPx220.

Posted by: mag300

jleecong,

That's great! Now how do I install that program? Does it install from the computer or do I save it over to a folder on the phone?

Thanks again.

Cab File works great

Posted by: mag300

I downloaded the file to my desktop. I tried to save them straight to the phone but was unable to. I got two files, 1 named _setup and the other VOLUME~1. I copied them over as suggested. When I click on the files they don't open, I just get information. This is pretty much the same thing that happened when I tried to run the registry editor before.

I am wondering if my phone settings are such that I can't access those files. In another example, I tried to delete a couple of jpg's that came with the phone that I have no interest in. I was unable to delete them. However, if I add a jpg, I can delete it. Did everyone else run the recent update? I did and so I am wondering if that somehow hard-coded some files.

I have been looking through the settings but haven't figured anything out yet. My guess is the real culprit is my ineptitude. I am probably overthinking this problem because there's so much I am not familiar with when it comes to programming, windows, etc.

I'm glad to see others are able to benefit from all the help that has been posted here.

Thanks.

Don't unpack the CAB file.

Download the file and transfer the cab to your phone (Storage for example) then using the phones file manager browse to the CAB file, highlight, hit the blue action button and you will be prompted to install the volume fix.

Some registry keys are locked and can only be changed by application unlocking your phone. I didn't want to do this so I learned how to create CABs to make the changes for me.

Posted by: mag300

Finally! Thanks a lot! I opened the registry editor and I can see the changes have been made just as you said.

I appreciate the guidance and patience.

Posted by: jim138

Did it help you with your volume issue?

Posted by: mag300

The cab file changed my InCall volume to 5 but my ring volume was already on 5 so it is the same.

I think the InCall volume is better and I appreciate that. I would still like to see some increased ringtone volume for files which are not midi files.

I notice in the registry there is a value for the speaker set to 1. I wonder what that means.

Posted by: VBprograM

Okay I installed the .cab file, everything is loud when i goto to setup the phone and my profile is set to be loud for my ring, but when it rings it is still very very low. any ideas?

Posted by: VBprograM

This is really pissing me off, I have done mp3 to wav and wma and he incoming call ring is super low. Anyone have any ideas tog et this thing louder? Do i need to convert it at a lower bit rate or soemthing? Let me know.

Posted by: kherm1

Please (DO NOT INSTALL THIS CAB FILE). I make this cab file

before and I remove it back out because it make your ringtone

more lower then before. If you want your ringtone back to normal

please read this post.

http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...15&pagenumber=1

PS Your ringtone will still low, If you uninstall VolumeFix .cab file.

So read the link,It will help you back to your own ringtone.

Posted by: VBprograM

even when i do this to get my stuff back to normal how can I fix the low volume for incoming calls from .wav or .wma or .mp3?

Posted by: VBprograM

Kherm the mpx220.zip and the regeditor smartione fixed the volume issue but u might want to fix that **** beep to level 2 so people wont start *****ing aboutt he beep. Works great for low volume ringtone.

Posted by: kherm1

I'm happy it worked for you.

Sometime people need to learn how to fix it themselves, It's for

there own goods.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\ InCall]
InitVol=Value date:5 . Turn it down to number 2 or something.

Or if you dont want to hear annoying loud beep at all go here.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\Dialing and rename

Dialing folder to Dialing1.

Posted by: mag300

kherm1,

Does this mean you can increase the volume on ringtones in the wma format to be as loud as a midi file?

I installed the cab file above and there is no difference in my ring volume because it didn't change the value (5) for ring in my registry. It was already at 5. I think it may have increased the InCall volume, however because mine was originally set at (2) and now it is at (5).

Would you mind posting what values in the registry you change with your file? I learned how to update the registry today with a program named MobileRegistryEditor.

EDIT..Nevermind kherm, I was able to open it up and take a look. I'll try it.

Thanks.

Posted by: killah21

I wouldnt recommend renaming the dialing folder to dialing1 cuz next time you turn your phone off then back on you get another dialing folder and so on.

Posted by: kherm1

[QUOTE]Originally posted by killah21

MY BAD>>>>>>>

Then! just turn it down.

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\ InCall]
InitVol=Value date:5 . Turn it down to number 2 or something.

Posted by: VBprograM

Yeah, that is DEF. the fix for low ringtone problems, and people can just goto there profile and turn down the sytem sound to like 2 and it is like its normal agian! I know a lot of people are having that problem and there is no need for people to have major problems, because it really was simple with the sreg file and the pc reg edit program!

kherm1 is the person to listen to. His MPx220.zip file is where I got the registry setting for I posted before. Glad he finally stepped in to answer your questions and hopefully with his experiance everything will be fixed.

I'm confused.. per your previous posts and your own exported reg file you list to change the value to 5.

My girlfriend couldn't hear crap on the phone till I did your changes now are you saying that the changes were wrong and it shouldn't have affected the InCall volume?

Posted by: mag300

I'm confused as well. I left (5) in on InitVol for InCall. The earpiece volume seems to work fine now. I am assuming this setting controls that function.
That is the only setting on my phone that got changed by the cab file.

Now in kherm's fix there are a couple of added values not included in the recent posted cab file. The one that may have helped me seems to be:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Att enuation]
"2"=dword:00000005

I just did the edit myself without running Kherm's mpx 220. The only other value that was different from my settings was "Reminder" and I left it alone.

I guess my question is this; How did the cab file make ringtone volume softer for some people if it only changed values to what is being suggested by Kherm anyway? (except for a couple of values like the one posted above)

My latest problem is my phone is saying something is wrong with my wma files. I haven't figured that one out yet, but I'm still working on it.

Thanks for all the help.

Posted by: mag300

I'm not nearly as clever as I thought!!

I changed the registry settings manually and the sounds were plenty loud and much better than before. I, however, didn't try them with an actual call. My wife could hear they were louder and to show off, I called my phone with her phone. The sound is extremely lower just like kherm said.

So now, how do I import the mpx 220 file to my phone. I have smartione installed and have copied the mpx 220 zip file to my temp folder. What do I do from there.

I've messed up my phone pretty good so far. Right now I think I could set the Guinness World Record for "cell phone toss" if there is one, but I really know the problem is me (with some credit to whomever decided to put this phone out with the low ringtone volume.)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Posted by: VBprograM

Heh MAG. the mpx220.zip doesnt need to be on the phone, just on your computers HD. Unzip the mpx220.zip file and there is a file called mpx220.sreg. Once you have unzipped that file on your computer make sure our phone is syscned with your computer and goto smartione then goto Tools. After that you will see your registry on your phone (Make sure its sysnced) then on the top far right there is a disk that is to Export a Sreg file, you want to Import a sreg file, so click the one just to the left of the disk to Import a sreg file. After that a progess bar will appear after its been imported and it will say something that the process was terminated or something, but that is normal. Now your incall volume ringtone is fixed. Also you are going to have an annoying BEEP sound, so go into your PROFILE and fix the system volume which i bealive it is at the bottom and put that on level 2. That is all! Enjoy

Posted by: mag300

O.K. Thanks,

That fixed it.

Thanks to the moderators for this forum.

OK!!! Let"s me start over.

1.[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\ InCall]
InitVol=Value date:5

2.[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Sounds\ Dialing]
You need to add Scrpt String Folder. In Dialing folder hit Values, hit Menu, Select New Value (String). Value name: (Script) and Value data: (0). So you should have 3 Sting Folder.
.................................................. ....

-Category
-Script
-Sounds

.................................................. ......

The InCall Volume set to the Top and No more beeping sound at all. Done!

Posted by: VBprograM

kherm works great the string registry file, what u need to do is make a new and improved mpx220.sreg file for this volume problem and make a freaking sticky so otehrs can fix there **** phone.

Here the new ( VolSetup.sreg ) file that you ask for. Also thanks to (jleecong) for helping me put my self together.

Posted by: VBprograM

Awsome, that will be def good for some of the new guys having this problem. I am sure a lot of people will benefit from this file.

Posted by: mag300

What does this file do? I installed the other fix and while the ringtone volume is better, I still can't hear it most of the time. I have the phone on vibrate and ring and I usually feel it, but I don't hear it in crowds or other somewhat noisy environments. I'm missing a lot of calls on this phone.

I'm really intrigued by the phone but I can't get past the frustration of the low ringtone volume.

I haven't had time to experiment with fixing the camera picture quality yet, but it appears to be inferior to other previous Motorola phones.

I am still within the 30 day return period and it may go back yet, but I hope I don't have to.

Thanks

If you install this (Volumefix.cab) file 1 or 2 day ago, than you need to install this (Volsetup.sreg) for better Ringtone volume and InCall volume setup.

PS After you install this (Volsetup.sreg) file. Check your Ringtone ,If still low than return it for a better one.

Posted by: mag300

O.K. I've updated the file.

Hopefully this will solve the problem. I'm starting to get used to the phone and it obviously has a lot of potential.

It sounds plenty loud in my current controlled environment, so maybe it will work out in the real world.

I appreciate everyone's willingness to help on this forum. Without your assistance there would be quite a few miserable people. Motorola should appreciate your efforts as well.

Thanks, again.

Posted by: VBprograM

NP MAG! That file works well and everything should work on it make sure you unistall the cab file it should be in your add remove programs section on your phone then install that .reg file!

okay, im an idiot. i have looked over this thread many times and can seem to put it all together. i have never edited a phone before dont have any programs for it but want my volume on ear/speaker to be better without changing every ringtone. can someone please put this thread in an order for me, what programs i need to install and where to get them, what changes i need to make and how to make them. it would be best if someone could talk to me like im 3 . thanks for your patience

Smartione is a must have, for remote editing the phone Registry via ActiveSync (Smartione runs on your laptop/PC host). It is well covered here http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...threadid=556878 and elsewhere in HoFo. Note that in Reg backups, the French developers' popup message saying "...Terminated" is their poor translation of FR. 'terminee', meaning "ended" not "aborted".

Since PHM Registry Editor crashes uncontrollably on my MPx220, I have Just installed ChrisON.net's Regedit., from http://chrison.net/CategoryView,cat...20Download.aspx Currently at v0.8.2, dated 12/20/04. I had to install it manually, though. The procedures in his PDF and batch file only gave me errors. My successful installation method was to:
1. Descending sort the pkg. by Type in WinZip and copy the three ARMv4-specific CABS to my Storage Card via ActveSync.
2. Run the OpenNETCF... CAB using (SP) File Manager and install to the [Phone] location.
3. Run the netcf.phone... CAB (I installed this to [Storage Card]).
4. Run the RegEdit.ARMv4... CAB (as in 3., above).
So far no crashes .

the first thing i did was run through 4muzr posted and it worked, then when i synced it to copy more mp3's it went quite again, so then i removed the open net cf file and the net cf phone file and the ChrisON.net's Regedit and then ran the PHM Registry Editor and installed the mpx220 sreg and changed the default values to 5 like earlier in the post then installed mpx220volumesetup.sreg
and it still all seems as quit. now it doesnt change when i try to do it again.

what are the registry hacks to increase the volume on the earpiece and for the media player as well as the speaker?? i think this will help if anyone know!!! thanks for the help!!!!

1) If i just manually change the registry values to above will it have all the hacks covered u discussed here so far?

2) Alternately, If i were to use your sreg file then do i need to use both ur sreg files or only the sreg files?

3) Do i need to back up my registry before modifuying it? If yes, the how?

i am unable to copy an mp3 file to the windows folder to set as ring tone, but it says access denied, how do i do this?

Posted by: cellchamp

Also i have about 200 contacts saved on my Sony Ericsson T610 phone memory, how do i move them to MPx220?

I tried to send via bluetooh, it took five minutes and upon completion only the contacts were not added to my MPx220 contacts menu. Is there a hack/wordaround to this? I believe the SEt610 and MPx220 contact stucture may not be directly compatible, is there a converter.

Copy your mp3 to your Storage Card but don't put in the folder.

Or You can put in Storage/Aplication Data/Sounds.

Ps Need to go to bed it 1:15am here.

Hey Kherm, I cannot remember where I found it, but there is a way you can modify the phone so that you can put your mp3's in a folder inside the member card and the phone will know to look in there when you go to change your ring tone. Have you heard of this thread????

ejb5oh is your sound any better after the registry hack?

Also, i just pulled off the cellophane plastic protective skin from the front and now my sound is 200% better then before, lol i feel so stupid. But i feel if the sound can go up further my phone would rock so tell me if the hack helped.

How can i set the phone to vibrate as well as ring?

To make your phone vibrate as well as ring you need to go to Settings/profiles/normal (or whatever profile you want it to ring and vibrate on)/ring. It will give you a few variations on how to funtion. I have mine set up to vibrate and then ring.

I believe Kherm's hack on the mpxvolume.sreg did work. I actually have turned my ear piece volume down now. Cant say that for before the sreg file was installed. The external speaker is loud if you are in a quiet setting but not in my case, as I am in a car or outside a lot.

I try to say If you put your MP3 in the Storage card and Don't put them in the folder inside your Storage card. If you do put your mp3 in the folder of Your SD card Than your phone will not look in there, Only in your Storage Card.
.................................................. ...............................................
Also, how u unlock windows folder for copying?

Some folder or file you can copy them from Windows folder and Some you can"t.

No need to backup you registry .

i applied these changes, but now I am getting a weird result, but could be because of something I already had installed on the phone. If I make a call, and get a busy signal, I will repeatedly hear a quiet busy sound, and a loud busy sound immediately after(Kind of of like an echoing effect, but the second busy sound is way louder than the first). Any thoughts on which setting could be causing this, and how to reset the sound.

thanks,
mh
