LG VX8000 and BitPim

This is using BitPim, and pretty much any of the latest versions will work. I’ve been successful using COM 1 and COM5, it just matters how your computer saves the driver. Enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Where can I get BitPim?

BitPim can be found here.

I do not use version 0.7.26 which is the latest. I use 0.7.25 which you can find here.

Personally I couldn't get 0.7.26 to work for me, ON MY LAPTOP but on my PC it works. Weird. Anyway if 0.7.26 doesn't work, uninstall the whole thing and then install .25

Pictures:

*Take a certain picture of whatever

*Save it, then use BitPim.

*Go to the “dload” tree

*Then open the “img” tree

*Then find that picture you just took, and right click on that file.

*Select “overwrite” and replace it with the picture you want.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Music/Ringtones:

*In ringtones, click on “record new” and record whatever.

*Go into BitPim and open up the “dload” tree.

*Then open up the “snd” tree

*Find that voice recording you did, and right click on it.

*Select “Overwrite”

*Find your ringtone and select it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Music/Tunes:

For your mp3 player in the phone this is alittle more difficult than putting ringtones on.

*First go into your BitPim and click on the “dload” tree

*Then the first file you see is “aod.dat” DELETE IT (this refreshes every restart)
*Now close the “dload” tree and open the “brew” tree
*Look near the bottom and you’ll see the “shared” tree, open it.
*Now open the “aod” tree.
*Right click on the “aod” tree and click on “New File”
*Find the Mp3 you want and upload it.
*Now once you finished uploading, restart BitPim and your phone. Then do the whole process over again.
(Now you can upload any mp3 at any quality. All my mp3s are 128, but that is taking up a lot of space, so I’m considering reloading them at 64.)
(Also if you upload something BIG like I have the 7 minute Metallica – One song there, if you upload a large song like this and you noticed your BitPim is probably frozen. Just unplug your phone and restart BitPim and your phone, and you’ll notice the is on there)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Video:

Here are the steps

*record something, for like a second. It doesn't matter.

*Download something in Avi. format (or convert video to avi)

*Now if it’s not Avi. format and you need a program to convert whatever file to Avi. then this is what I recommend.

" STOIK Video Converter 2 "

IT'S FREE!!!!

-How to use:

-Input File - is the video u got that u want in avi format.

-Output file - is where ur new avi. is going to show up on ur comp.

-Output format - is what format u want ur new video to be

-Select " AVI to Small PC " becuz that size fits ur screen the best

-Also press " Crtl P " and at the bottom u need to switch the audio from momo to stero (cuz u got the 8000 might as well use stero right?)

*Use Nokia Multimedia converter 2.0 to convert Avi. to QCIF (You can find here. )

-Open your new Avi. file and then hit “Convert”

-Give it a couple seconds, then save the file!

*Use BitPim 0.7.25 (or any working BitPim)

*Go to Brew/Media/ the video file you recorded

*Right click on the file and select "Overwrite"

*Find ur QCIF file and there u go!

Leave your comments and questions and have fun!

Excellent job Brandondork.

I've cleaned your post up a bit, added a few bells and whistles and changed the title to match the other tutorial theads.

I also stuck it.

Excellent thread! I just ordered the VX8000 phone and should receive it soon.

A couple suggestions I have are to mention that the VX7000 data cable works perfectly for the VX8000 and where one can get them (e.g. EBay). Also, please provide a link to the latest BitPim driver. Thanks!

Posted by: Brandondork

Yes the LG 7000 data cable will work. There is no difference between the two (unlike the 6000)

I've bough my data cables (6000 and 7000) off of ebay. For those of you who are looking for the best deal, with the fastest service. I've shop with " coolwireless " from ebay. That's his profile name, so I recommend him, the packages are never late, the shipping is never overcharged and the products work! The data cable DOES come with the driver for your computer.

Bitpim can be found @ http://bitpim.sourceforge.net/

They often have updates once to twice a month on their software. This is FREE. And very easy to use.

I do not use version 0.7.26 which is the latest. I use 0.7.25 which you can find here http://sourceforge.net/project/show...ckage_id=120233

Personally I couldn't get 0.7.26 to work for me, ON MY LAPTOP but on my PC it works. Weird. Anyway if 0.7.26 doesn't work, uninstall the whole thing and then install .25

Anymore questions?
(Adminitstrator, obviously I was in a rush typing this. If you could take this information and clean it and put it with the first post of mine. So one post has all the answers. That'd be great. Thanx)

Done.

I was just checking out the post and noticed the ringer routine that is posted is kinda the long way of doing it.

I just deleted the sound.dat file and uploaded all my ringers and rebooted the phone and they all appear and work.

Lot easier then doing the overwrite method i think.

Also walmart.com Music section there sound samples are the perfect format and length for great mp3 ringers for those of you who dont know.

You can email yourself ringers too. Rename an mp3 or wav or whatever to .mid and email it to your10digitnumber@vzwpix.com it will cost you 25 cents each for pix usage if you dont have a plan.

VX8000 is by far the best phone out on the market. I am in charge of the Verizon accounts at work and I get to try every model and the 6100 just plain sucks and the 7000 is decent but the 8000 is definitely the best. And for all you people that complain about its size. I think its more confortable that way, you dont fat finger keys and you got a much bigger clearer screen and sound and so on... If you hold it side by side with a 6100 there the same size besides the 6100 being rounded edges and not squared off like the 8000 so it aint much different.

Had to get that out I cant see seeing all these people making the 8000 look out to be a giant brick or something.

Posted by: rutger1413

the way that was stated earlier can save you tons of time actually. If you specify seperate ringers per person and you delete sound.dat. you have to reset most of your contacts ringers.

I'm new & 4 the life of me i can't find the cables i need 4 this phone. I did the ebay thing no luck. I have the Verizon Mobile Office Kit & data cable 4 the vx6000 but that didn't work QPST or Bitpim. Although Bitpim did work when i did the overwrite thing 4 ringtones but it sounded just like the one on my vx6000. What i mean is it wasn't that loud. I tried 2 add a ringtone but got errors. I even set Bitpim 2 think it was a vx7000. Hope u understand what i'm saying. Help & Thankx

you need vx7000 data cable....

Posted by: samsoccerguy

Does anyone know how to send pictures from the phone to a home email address?

Posted by: Brandondork

just like e-mailing a picture from e-mail to e-mail. Just put bob@yahoo.com as the place it goes. But cost $$$

Posted by: samsoccerguy

I have the email address, text comes through but no picture?

Posted by: beowulf7

I don't know if it would be appropriate in this thread, but since the VX8000 is being offered by VZW only, it might be. See if you can include links for free WAP and GAGIN that's mentioned in the VZW forum. Thanks.

How about a Link to the vx8000 Driver we should be using please..

You should put in the create a pix message:

joe@hotmail.com or something like that.

It should work.

If someone is trying to send you a picture message, then they need to put the following (when sending from one phone to another or when sending from a email address to another phone):

5551234567@vzwpix.com

I just received the USB cable and latest software from RPI but cannot download addresses from phone. The charger works fine. What could be the problem?

Thankx but where do i get one. Everyone keeps talking about Furture Dial one at Radio Shack. I have 4 of them (Radio Shacks) & no one at any of them know what i'm talking about.

Posted by: coeftw

anyone have any suggestions on which usb cable to get. the people on ebay are saying you need one thing and someone else says you need this type of plug. any links or names of good cables to buy and i was just gonna order one and download that bitpim software. thanks peece

Posted by: Brandondork

in a way there is NO 8000 data cable. You need the 7000 data cable (it's the same fit, size). You can buy a data cable without drivers, but i recommend u buy the cable from the guy I do, he's on ebay, his ebay name is " coolwireless ". I've used him for other things, also my old 6000 data cable which still works a year later! If you buy a data cable and can't find drivers... sorry I have no info for you, maybe someone knows more about that. I'm about done learning anything else on this phone. Though I'm still working on getting video ringtones, and then having music video ringtones... fo sho!

not sure... but u want it to be the 7000 cable WITH cd

personally, i have a vx7000 but my friend has a vx8000(im pretty jealous i should have waited 2 months). anyway i have my data cable set up on my comp and i hooked it up to his phone and it worked perfectly. so for all of u who are wondering what stuff to use. i have a data cable designed fo rthe vx6000 that is shaved down to fit my 7000. its a futuredial cable i got from radio shack and once i got that i used the futuredail drivers online. i used qpst and it recognized right away. i would suggest joining http://www.s-c-u-m.com/cell/ it got me everything i needed.

I am having some trouble transferring data between my phone & PC.

This is what it says on the first entry for this thread:

"Go into BitPim and open up the “dload” tree. "

I have installed BitPim version 0.7.25. But I do not see how to get to the "dload" tree as it says. What am I doing wrong?

My screen looks like this...

Posted by: Allmondjoy87

you have to go to view/viewfilesystem then a new screen will pop up

Posted by: holla123

Thank you! It worked!

Posted by: beowulf7

I should clarify what Brandondork said in the first post. Stoik Video Converter has 2 versions, where one is free to use a less feature-rich version and the other costs $30 to use the "Pro" version.

I don't know if the free version can convert .3g2 to .avi (or something else) since his videohelp.com link indicates that only the Pro version does so.

Brandon, please clarify. Thanks.

Posted by: beowulf7

FAUguy provided this tip.

This is for everyone that hates it when the external and internal displays go black after 2 minutes. You can fix this by going into the Service Menu. Keep in mind, if after doing this you turn your phone off and on, this will be reset back to factory default.

1) Press "OK"
2) Press "0" (zero)
3) Service Code "000000" (six zeros)
4) Select "2. Field Test"
5) Select "*. Power Save Mode"
6) Select "Off" and OK
7) Clear out of service mode

Now the internal and exteral displays will not turn black after 2 minutes. According to those who've implemented this, it does not seem to drain the battery much faster than the default scenario.

This is what the web site says this program can...

NEW IN SVC 2.1 PRO

* Import QuickTime movies and files supported by QuickTime:*.mov, *.qt, *.3gp, *.3gpp, *.3g2, *.3gp2, *.mp4 and *.mpg4 files.
* Improved operation of clip editing mode

NEW IN SVC 2.0

* Windows Media 9, DivX AVI supported
* Preinstalled profiles for WM9, profile editor
* Merge files
* Convert multiple files at once
* DV file output
* Preserve interlacing when changing frame size, e.g. NTSC-PAL
* Output profiles, WM9 profiles, profile editor

Tool features, Convert:

AVI to AVI, AVI to DivX, AVI to DV, AVI to WMV, AVI to XviD, DivX to AVI, DivX to DivX, DivX to DV, DivX to WMV, DivX to XviD, DV to AVI, DV to DivX, DV to DV, DV to WMV, DV to XviD, WMV to AVI, WMV to DivX, WMV to DV, WMV to WMV, WMV to XviD

there ya go; but i use this program to convert all my NON AVI. videos to AVI. format so i can use my "Nokia Multimedia Converter 2.0" to convert that or any AVI. movie to .3g2 format. Now for going .3g2 to AVI my Free Stoik Video Converter won't convert .3g2 to AVI.

Posted by: beowulf7

That last scenario is what I need. For some reaso my Apple Quick Time ver. 6.5.2 won't play .3g2 files. I upgraded from 6.0.x, I think, but now I know it is def. 6.5.2. So I wanted a tool that can convert .3g2 to something else more mainstream, such as .mpg or .avi.

I guess I'll either have to cough up the $30 or look for another free tool. I don't know if the latest TMPGEnc can convert from .3g2 to .mpg. That program can pretty much convert all other formats to .mpg and as of their latest release, even XVid and DivX. However, they also have freeware and fully functional versions.

What about using the VX8000 as a modem. I know people can do it. I am in the EVDO area but it just connects to 1X 3G DATA rather than 1XEVDO .

Please post how to use your 8000 as a modem.

Thanks a bunch!

Posted by: regenesis

I'm pretty sure you won't be able to access the 1XEVDO network unless you're paying for BroadbandAccess. That was the whole point of converting NationalAccess to MOU...it used to be considered the "high speed" data connection that they made you pay extra for, but now the technology has advanced to the point that they've phased out QNC, made 1XRTT standard and 1XEVDO premium.

just to clarify to all. i have the lg vx6000 cable and i use it with my lg vx8000 and it works perfectly. someone please post up the directions on HOW to make your computer DETECT the lgvx8000. that was my ONLY problem.

it goes something like.
1. Go into your cell and change data settings to 11500 and USB(or maybe RSC..)<--i don't remember.
2. Connect cell phone to computer via vx6000 or vx7000 cable.
3. Open up 'QPST Configuration' Program.
4. Click on Add New Port
5. Type in "COM1" and onward until you get to yours. I had to keep on going until i reached "COM15".
6. Highlight and make sure it's enabled.
7. Go into your other 'QPST' programs and have fun.

Ok I have a qcp file I copied to my pc and I need to convert it to wav. I have wav2pcq program but it doesn't seem to work. It worked on my 4400 but not on the 8000, they must have changed the format. Anyone know how to convert it?

Posted by: preston

i just renamed the .wav file or .mp3 ((i cant remember which one it was)) to the .qcp and put it on my phone and it worked fine.

Posted by: acemilo

No I need to go the other way, qcp to wav. Also it works on your phone because your phone supports them all natively so it doesn't care what its named. They must use a new codec and they don't have a tool for it afaik.

Posted by: preston

Sorry, I misread your post. I haven't found anything of that nature yet

Hi everyone & thankx 4 all ur help. But i got another question. I got the right cables this time & use bitpim. But the ringtone isn't that loud. How do i make it louder? The volume is set 2 max & i tried different bits. This is a ringtone. Help please.

Posted by: acemilo

Just use a sound editor like cool edit or sound forge and they should have an amplify filter.

Can someone post the limit for mp3, ringtones, apps? There was a huge thread that the beta testers had started that had all that info and for the life of me I can not find it now. Spent a couple of hours searching and no luck. Anyone have the link to it???

Re: BitPim, are you using the older software (.25) vs. the newer version (.26)? According to Brandondork, the older .25 works (better).

Posted by: Brandondork

BitPim is weird, cuz when I was using my computer I had the new verison (.6) but when my computer crashed, .6 didn't work, so I downloaded the older (.5) and that works fine for me.

Posted by: beowulf7

Hopefully ver. .27, whenever it's released, will fix these bugs and specifically have a choice for VX8000.

active speakerphone, plug in ur headset, call someone, close the phone, and then unplug the speakerphone.
answering by speaker phone, u already would have it activated, then when someone calls you open the phone

so you cant answer the phone with it closed? you have to have it open to use the speaker phone unless u used the headset and unplug it

I was wondering the same thing. The first time I used speakerphone, I assumed it would work even w/ the flip closed (like using a headset). I wound up hanging up on my friend, LOL. Too bad the phone doesn't have an option for this part.

Any one know when we will be able to get the data cables for the 8000? I'm too chicken to use the one from my 7000

Posted by: Brandondork

if I sold my 7000 cable in an 8000 box, would you pay $50 bucks for it? There is no difference in anyway any form. Cuz thats what your lookin at doing, paying more for the samething.
Think of it this way, they don't make 8000 data cables.

wow you would think a simple no would have done it. My fault for asking.

He's just trying to provide an explanation. Maybe you want a simple "no", but others might appreciate the explanation.

That said, I wonder why the EBay sellers don't put "VX8000" in the title of their auction item along with "VX7000".

Hey, I am computer illiterate so can someone help me? I have the bitpim and the cable. It got the info off the 7000 but it will not do anything with the 8000. I want to transfer my ringers and hopefully my games to my new 8000. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong? I tried changing the settings to "another cdma phone" but that did not work. Anything I try on the 8000 says a fatal error accured. Thanks for any help!!! Oh, I have some video that is important that I would like to transfer too. Thanks again!

Can somone explain how to change the IP address and port # to get free WAP? I read in the VZW forum that IP address 66.119.33.134, Port #8000 is a pretty reliable Web service provider. Thanks.

According to their Web site, the changes in BitPim 0.7.27 vs. 0.7.26 are as follows.
Code:
* Added the capability to import data from vCalendar data files. * Mac Now have the Metal appearance. Will not be getting an 'i' prefix. Download is reduced in size by a third. * Sanyo SCP-7300 Increased wallpaper size from 132x144 to 132x176. * Sanyo MM-7400 Reading and writing of calendar should work * Samsung SPH-A620/VGA1000Work around buggy phone software that caused the apparent number of numbers in phone to increase with repeated writes of phonebook. Preserve birthdays, where possible, when writting phonebook. * LG Phones The length of memos has been increased to what each phone model supports (64 chars on VX4500 and VX6100, 48 on VX4600, 32 on all other models.) * SK6100/SK Music Slider (Pelephone, Israel) Added basic read-only access to the phonebook. * Samsung SCH-A670 Some fixes and enhancements: o Create media directories if they do not exist. o For contact names, if Full name is not specified, will use "First Middle Last" combination. o jpeg is now the default wallpaper format, which will allow these images to be reliably used as contact pix id. o Video clips can now be downloaded with other wallpaper images.

It doesn't mention anything specifically about VX8000.

The thread is a tutorial/guide for using BitPim. You cant use BitPim without the cable. So adding what you've requested wouldnt fit the topic.

Do a search, there are alot of threads on sending the emails. Basically just send whatever you want to "yournumber@vzwpix.com". There are some requirements, so do the search to get all the information you need.

I respectfully disagree. This is a tutorial for the LG VX8000. That transcends just the BitPim stuff. Granted, when Brandondork initially created this thread, it was tailored for BP specifically. But a moderator changed the title to make it clear that all tips and how-to guides related to the VX8000 should be mentioned in this thread. Hopefully, as other good advice is given, a moderator can updated the first post of this thread to mention it.

I'm having some problems with Bitpim and I'm hopeing someone else here has had the same problems and know's what's up.

I also installed QPST and the phone shows up fine, and the directory shows up fine. No problems getting to my files.

In Bitpim settings, my phone is on COM5 and I choose vx7000 (I've tried others and this problem happens with them all).

The phone is showing up because when I go in to the filesystem on Bitpim, everything is there.

However, when I try to "get phone data" I get a popup window error and it says the following:

It happens every single time I try to get phone data. I've trying to grab phonebook, wallpaper and ringers. Any ideas? the help file isn't very helpful other than to report the error if it keeps happening.

I stand corrected. Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Make sure the ringtones end with the .mid extension. As far as I can tell, I have tried to do it with other extensions, and it always fails.

Posted by: dan7u

Does it have to be an auctual midi file, or can it be a mp3 with an extension that was changed?

how do u change an mp3 or wav to mid

No problem at all.

just rename the file from xxx.mp3 to xxx.mid and send it. Once the file is on your phone rename it.

is there a way to compress these files? cause i tried to use a song and just cut it so its was 30 seconds and it said it was like 5 mb

I'm assuming you have a WAV file. To compress it to MP3 before renaming it as MID, use an MP3 encoder, such as GoldWave and Razor LAME. You can get the shareware version to do this. Go to http://www.goldwave.com for details.

Posted by: crash6934

how do u use goldwave and lame to compress the files

By compress, you mean "re-encode", right (i.e. WAV ==> MP3)?

Read the documentation in that link I provided.

Posted by: crash6934

by compress i actually mean make the file smaller, cause the wav files are like 5 mb after i cut them down and the mp3 files are still like 500 kb

Is there any settings 2 make songs louder? Like EQ or something

yeah something around the word "amplify" or if you only have an eq just raise the level of each to the same DB level. while you are at it you might want to lower the bass because you wont really hear it on the phone.

Posted by: Brandondork

I use Cool Edit Pro 2 it does everything that's been mentioned on the thread that people need and about 5,000 other things.

Posted by: jsja

Thankx all but what i meant was on the phone itself.

Posted by: RROMAN

I must be doing something wrong. I only got 7 songs on the phone, and its full. What is the avg size of a MP3 song?

Posted by: Uhprentis

4-7 Megs is typical
7 times say 6 MB per song = 42 Megs.....content area is about 46 MB in size....:-(

Sorry to inform you, thats all she wrote.

What most suggest is lower the bitrate to 64K max from the typical 128K or higher as the phone itself will not output quality above 64K anyway. This woukld reduce the size of the mp3's greatly with no loss in sound quality from the perspective of one listening to them through the LG.

Hi, I got a data cable from cellphoneshop.net, it says on the website that the cable will work with the 8000. So i got it, plugged it in, and my computer automatically used the prolific drivers i had. I tried both QPST and BitPim, neither worked. So then I changed the drivers to the FutureDial drivers, still didnt work... The Computer recognizes that I have a usb cable plugged into COM4 and uses the drivers, and in QPST and BitPim, it shows the cable on COM4, but not the phone itself. Can someone help me? I had the 4400 and a cable with that, and it originally worked, but i made some configuration change on my computer, and i think it kinda screwed it up, and now this one doesnt work, so I'm pretty desperate now.

Posted by: rick0204

Keep trying different com numbers until you find your phone.

Posted by: spurfan15

you mean, go into the device manager and keep changing the COM port till it comes up on QPST?

I got it, FIFO buffer on, and COM 7, thanks alot for the help.

Posted by: Jerseygirl

I finally got the Bitpim to work, and downloaded some mp3's as ringers using soundrecorder.
I have two questions:

1.when I record something on the phone (which I replace with the song) it is downloaded as a file number. how do I change it to the name of the song - once it's on the phone or on Bitpim?

2. The volume on the downloaded ringer is not very loud. Is there another program I can use which allows me to increase the volume substantially? I downloaded the SoundForge, but I really wasn't sure how to edit the song on it, and I don't feel like paying for it after the trial period ends. Any other suggestions?
thanks.

is that software you purchased, or is it available for download?

Posted by: spurfan15

Hmm... this is really strange. After I restarted my computer, I have the same problem I had before. It was fully functioning on COM7, but after restarting, with the same settings, it no longer works. Any suggestions? Btw i went through probably 25 COM ports, none showed it.

Posted by: Brandondork

I downloaded my verison of cool edit pro 2 and you can "amplify" the sound of your mp3s, also change it to 64k.

also about putting music on, like i mentioned, just overwrite the sound file you recorded with the mp3 and then just change the name of the song to whatever you want like normal on the phone.

Posted by: erico30

Is there absolutely no way to get tunes on your 8000 without a data cable? I dont want to wait a week for my data cable to get here if i order one

Posted by: rick0204

There is no way to get mp3's into your phone except with a data cable. Verizon implies that Get It Now offers tunes, but none are available for now. Remember that the 8000 is not a full time mp3 player. There is very limited storage available and your phone will not turn on if the storage is 95% or higher. I have 5 mp3's in the phone and I will not transfer any more then that. Be careful when you get your cable and just add a few.

Posted by: bkw13

I have read the forums from the 1st two pages of this thread about how to add video's pics, tunes, and tones to my phone using qpst and I have done that easily. However, is there a way to transfer ppics, videos, etc from the LG VX8000 to the computer?

I'd appreciate any help,
thanks,

BW

I'm wondering if you use an older verison of bitpim that, maybe that would help. Cuz I use 0.7.25 cuz .26 wouldn't work for me.

I picture messaged a picture and a ringtone (a short call I recorded) to my e-mail address. I received a small .qcp file, which I have no idea how to open. Neither Winamp nor QuickTime recognize it. Can anyone advise on how to play that audio file? Thanks.

Posted by: beowulf7

I made my first (2) custom ringtones.

I first created a sub-30-sec. tune that I liked. I used GoldWave to do the editing. (You also need Razor LAME to save as an MP3 - that GoldWave link will explain this). I then renamed the file to <filename>.mid. Then I e-mailed that file to <my 10-digit-ph-#>@vzwpix.com.

My phone received the text message and I saved the file as a sound. I got an error message saying that only files under 30 KBYTE can be saved, but I think the phone means 30 sec., based on my playing around. To be safe, make sure your clip is under 30 sec., maybe even at or under 29.5 sec. (in case the phone rounds off).

64 kbps sounded horrible on my computer, so I saved the file as 96 kbps, which isn't too bad. I didn't compare 64 vs. 96 on my phone itself since I had already spent a buck or so spamming my phone w/ those .mid files.

Open the phone, press the voice memo button on the side of the phone (has the pic of the mic), record a 1 sec memo, hit ok, and now it will bring up all the ring tones and memos, you can erase, and rename them all.

anyone know of any programs with the ability to compress an MP3 a little so we can fit more on the phone?

Posted by: jayno20

i've been uploading some mp3's and i noticed taking the KBPS down to 80 keeps the quality and makes each mp3 between 1.8-2.2 mb's.. so its a little less memory consuming..

Hi all. I hope someone out there has experience trying to connect the phone to a PC using Windows ME. I am using a data cable for the vx7000 and the LG drivers, connecting to a VX8000

The OS does recognize the phone when I connect it to the cable and machine. Here is a screen shot of the device manager view.

According to various directions out there the actual com port should be listed with the driver name. What I have showing is "VCOMM". You can however see COM3 in the modem details. Both views are in the screen shot. When I run bitpim shows the same information as in the device manager. When i select my phone it automatically sets to com3.

Both Bitpim and Qpst do not access the phone. Qpst claims there is no phone at com3. And Pitpim gives errors when trying to get the filesystem or data, and nothing is in the log tab.

I also have the mobile office kit from Verizon for the 7000. I get the same exact result using their drivers. The quicklink mobile phonebook that comes with the office kit does not find the phone.

Any suggestions and ideas are appreciated. Thanks!

PS..
I have been doing various searches on this site, google, yahoo etc in attempts to find a solution. So far I have not found much help. This is the only post I saw that involved similar info and no one replied to them.

I wasted a buck trying to figure out what the largest MP3 (.mid) file can be accepted and used as a ringtone. So far, I've figured out that 29.800 sec. works. I encoded it at 96 kbps (44.1 kHz), which gives it a file size of about 350 kB. I'll literally be dancing whenever someone calls me.

Posted by: jayno20

i've noticed that adding ringtones at anything above 64 doesnt sound any different... same with full MP3's... i finally got my data cable today and i've uploaded about 22 MP3's to the tunes section at 64kbps and they sound fine, and i uploaded about 6 ringers all at 64 and a few at 96 and one at 128, and i couldnt notice a difference from anything over 64... but u can if its less than 64, so thats the magic number i guess puts ringers that are about 30 seconds long in the 1 to 2 mb range

i made all the kbps 64... it makes all the mp3 files about 1 to 2 megs big.. sounds no different than a 128 kbps file..

Thats what I did, but the songs are still like 4-5 meg each?

Posted by: RROMAN

Also, how come when I try to load a picture using the instructions on the first page, it dont work? Just a blank picture shows up.

Posted by: jayno20

i've never tried loading a picture, but as for ur mp3's how long are they?

Posted by: webmonger

If you are creating the ring tones correctly, 30sec or under at 64kb, the file should be aroud 300kb or under.

The general rule of thumb is 1 meg per 1 minute in an mp3 with higher data rate. A file that is 4 or 5 megs is the entire song!

Maybe this will help. Here is a link to MP3 sound cutter. I have used this to great success as well as many other people.
http://www.download.com/MP3-Sound-C...9-10242376.html

You can cut a song to 30 seconds and reduce the data rate to 64 with it. Basically free ware if you want to make short clips. You only have to get the license if you want to make mp3s a minute long or over.

Good Luck!

Posted by: jayno20

he's actually asking about the mp3 player part of the vx8000 the ringers are a completely seperate thing..

Posted by: beowulf7

Does anyone know what's the largest MP3 one can e-mail to his phone (@vzwpix.com)? For example, if I want to e-mail a 10 MB file over, will my VX8000 accept it, assuming that I have enough space on the flash memory?

Posted by: jayno20

personally i couldnt email any mp3's to my phone, i tried it about a hundred different ways and none worked... just get a data cable.. it will save u money from pix messaging anyway..

However, it also has warning devices:

What's supposed to show up? People mention being able to set the COM port and 115.2kbps, but I don't see those options. I installed the USB driver -- what else am I missing?

What is a safe number of tunes to put on to your vx8000. It holds 46 MB, so how many MB is safe to put on it?

Posted by: jayno20

i've got about 42 on mine and its fine..

Here's what I got in my phone... only the Offspring - Gone Away is in 64k the rest are 128k but Metallica - One is actually 320kbps and yes there is a difference in sound from CD quality to 64k.
I have 9 mp3s. Works for me

i havent noticed a difference.. in ringers or mp3's.. i've put up to 192 kbps and then 64 and didnt notice any difference what so ever other than a huge difference in file size..

Good question - I was wondering the same thing. My gut feeling is that listening via the headset yields much better results than through the little speakers on the phone itself.

I went to RS yesterday looking for something else. While there, I decided to check out data cables for this phone. I know there are no official data cables available yet for this phone, so I looked for the VX7000's. The salesman said that the VX7000 is too new and they don't carry those data cables yet. WTF?

I looked at some other data cables they carried. There was one for LG that was compatible w/ the 4500, 6000, and a couple other models. But it cost $22! RS also sold the Future Dial software for $41! So a data cable + software would've cost $63 + tax!!!! Ouch. Thank God for EBay.

I see ... thanks!

I should've checked out that "Info" button before. I thought maybe the memory stuff would be shown in the "Settings & Tools" menu instead of the "Get It Now" menu.

It looks like the "Info" soft key is the same for all 5 items on the menu. And it doesn't differentiate from pictures and MP3s.

I'm currently at 6.3 MB/46.13 MB, but it shows my "Tunes" count as 0/100. I guess the phone is referring to what was purchased via GIN. (My FLIX gallery is 3/100, which is probably taking up the 6.3 MB.)

That's true. I don't have a data cable yet, but I'll order soon. I'd also then play around w/ BitPim and/or QPST, etc., as described in this thread.

I guess custom ringtones (like the MP3s I renamed as MIDs and e-mailed to my phone) don't show up as a tune.

One thing I noticed while playing around deleting expired applications is that hitting the "3" key doesn't let you go to "3. Erase/Cancel". You have to hit the down arrow twice to get there. I just found it odd, since almost in all other menus, you can hit the # of where you want to go instead of having to hit the up/down arrows.

I am using the VX7000 data cable along with BitPim. Its working fine for me.

I find that its easier to use Nokia Multimedia PLAYER, not converter.

This is how easy it is...

First I record a new clip with the VX8000. Just hit record for 1 second, then save the file.

Open up the Nokia Media Player, click File > Open..
select your file..

Once its loaded, click File > Save as..

it brings up a window that lets you choose the 3gp format AND the size limit and window size.

Takes like 10 seconds to complete.

Then I open up BitPim, open the file system tree..

go to +Brew > media > (filename.3gp)

right click on the clip you just recorded, and go to OVERWRITE. It will ask you what file, just find the .3gp file you just converted with NMP. Highlight your file, and click open. It will overwrite the file, and when its done, it'll say ready at the bottom.

Hope this helps.

You can cut a song to 30 seconds and reduce the data rate to 64 with it. Basically free ware if you want to make short clips. You only have to get the license if you want to make mp3s a minute long or over.

Good Luck!

This software is easy touse, but does it allow you to amplify the sound? I looked at spome other software, and I can't figure it out...

Also, sorry, but I am really computer challenged. What is kbps and how do you change the rate? Thanks.

Far as I know this application just cuts out segments of song files for you, so it does not let you amplify sound or modify any other levels. You will have to use one of the other mirad of song software out there. I do not have a free one to suggest at the moment. Maybe someone else does?

kbps is the bit rate aka data rate i mentioned, which you quoted in the prior message. For a ring tone you should probably start with 64kbps and work from there. It provides good sound quality and a good file size to have a number of custom ringtones. You will get to set that paramater when you have clicked save after having selected the 30 second or under segment of the song you want.

It also has a nice optional feature to fade in and or out at the begining and or end of the song.

That link you provided for the media player is the one. I only use that for videos. I use a different program for doing mp3's. I'll have to find the link for that once I get home from work.

I just received a VX8000 USB cable from a vendor on ebay with included disk of Bitpim, and now want to start playing around with it.

I'd like to think of myself as a good citizen here but I've read a lot about the VX8000 in multple threads and I'm still clueless about the initial setup of things.

First thing is that Bitpim wants me to identify my phone. There is not a selection for the 8000, presumable because it is pretty new. Can I use the 7000 selection or is there a place to find the 8000 "driver". And if it is available somewhere, what do I do to install it so that it will be a choice in the Bitpim pulldown?

Also I see a lot references to COM ports and data rates. I don't get understand that because I haven't had to pay much attention to that serial port stuff since USB became prevalent. The cable I jsut got is a USB cable, not a D9 or D25, so what's all this stuff about COM ports?

Thanks,
\Reg

Posted by: coeftw

i had the same problem and i found out the only way to use bitpim with the vx8000 is to go to the filelog/fileys (something like that) tab and use it like windows explorer. the ebay sellers prob dont know what there selling or how to use it. there are good stickeys/threads here that explain how to fully set it up and how to use it. on my machine it works under com5 and ive heard alot of other people talking about com5.

Posted by: regfman

Thank you for responding but I hate to say, I have no idea what you are talking about????

"go to the filelog/filys tab" --- Where? In bitpim? I don't see anything like that. Then you imply to browse like windows explorer. Browse for what?

And back to the COM port stuff. COM 5? Where/what? What does that have to do with a USB cable?

Unfortunately I don't understand what the heck you are talking about. More reading for me....

Posted by: lisa1

I just started using a data cable also. I didn't get bitpim to recognize my phone so I tried QPST and it worked fine. I uploaded one ringtone as a test. Tonight I am going to see if I can get bitpim to work. Have you loaded the driver and gotten your pc to recognize your phone? It took me awhile to get it right -- XP kept on detecting new hardware over and over again, even though it kept on finding the driver.

Posted by: cross3228

I am still having problems with bitpim (see my earlier posts). Is there anyone here who can help. Is there a more technical forum that I can go to. All I keep seeing here is mp3 and video crap. I just want to manage my phone book.

Posted by: F34R

To use the file system tree for the vx8000 here is what you need to do :

Fire up BitPim.. click on VIEW > File System

This is what I do, and it works everytime for me. There are probably other ways to do it, and maybe faster. I have found if you take it slow, and know what you are doing, it cant go wrong.

ok..

for mp3's as ringtones :

go to Get It Now > Get Tunes & Tones > Record New

record like a 3 second audio clip, and save it. Either leave the name, or change it, doesnt matter.. just remember the name.

Fire up BitPim, and click on the +/ and it will expand the file system.

Click on +dload > +snd
this will expand and you will see the ringtone that you just recorded.
Right-click on the ringtone, and choose OVERWRITE.

The browse window will open up. Navigate to your mp3 you would like as your ringtone, double click on it. Your status will change on the bottom letting you know its writing to the phone.

After its done, it will say READY down at the left bottom corner of BitPim.

Thats it ! Your new mp3 ringtone is ready to be set as the ringtone.

TIPS :

Make sure you have your mp3 files ready to be written before starting BitPim up. It saves time.

Also, make sure you have cut the MP3 down to 30 secs, and 64kbps in quality, stereo.

Hope this helps...

When you are loading MUTIPLE tunes to your phone, is it okay to do this?

-delete aod.dat
-load MUTIPLE tunes
-restart phone

or do you have to use this procedure?

-delete aod.dat
-load a tune
-restart phone/bitpim
-repeat

Posted by: F34R

I add them one at a time. So I am not sure about the multiple tones at a time procedures.

Like I said, I take my time with it, I am in no hurry. Takes a minute or two per tone, so its not killing my time or anything.

Sorry dude, BitPim don't work like that yet. You have to use the tree to change things around.

If an EBay seller is advertising a data cable as "LG VX7000 VX8000 VX6100 USB Data Cable", does it mean that I'd have to shave the cable to make it fit in a VX8000? From what I've read, if a data cable fits in a VX7000, it'll fit in a VX8000. But if the data cable fits in a VX6100, it'll be a tight fit (probably would need to be shaved) to fit in a VX7000 or VX8000. So how can a seller say a data cable is compatible with all 3 phones?

For example, check out this data cable that twosheaenterprises is selling on EBay. It comes w/ a "huge super CD", but I don't really care about its ringtones and wallpaper pictures.

This is basically "the" forum for information cell phones. You have to ask your question. If you have what you feel is a new topic then maybe try starting a new thread on the vx8000 phonebook.

Assuming you already have a datacable. The easiest answer for you is to get the mobile office suite for vx7000 from Verizon which includes a mobile phone book app. It works fine with the vx8000. Once you have it installed just return it.

Unless you are intending to code your own mobile phone app. Or want to try importing into excel or something. I have not attempted that yet but I have to expect it is possible.

My windows XP is recognizing it connected to the usb, but doesn't have a driver.

Can someone please give me a direct link to a downloadable driver for this phone? I tried Futuredial.com and didn't get anything useable yet.

The connector for the 6100 7000 and 8000 are all the same. It will fit perfectly. At least mine did. If you go to a retail store or reseller, and look at the vehicle charger for the 6100 7000 or 8000, its all the same.

Is there any way to download or sync contacts from outlook with BitPim or QPST?

Posted by: JPDVM2014

I see all of this talk about what the phone does if you store too many things on it.
Is this just for things that are added via data cable??
If you are just using the standard features of the vx8000 (camera, video, etc.) and you go over the memory, will it have the same effect?
Or will it just say "memory full" or something like that? I was just wondering.

Go to ebay and look for dwoodsz he has cables and drivers on his site too I got one for my 8000 and it works fine. The 7000 and 8000 are the same but the 6100 is slightly different, it has 3 grooves on the bottom I think and the 7000/8000 have only 2

I just got my data cable on ebay. It included the drivers and they work OK. It also included Bitpim and I spent 3 hours trying to get it to work. FINALLY I got it to work and the only part I can use is the filesystem part. The phonebook part just will not work. I get exceptions everytime and there is no help in the help file! Has any one out there gotten the phone book part to work? If so HOW!!!

Thanks, but I'm kind of getting mixed messages. For example, look at what Thundaar wrote, saying how the 6100 connector is a little different than 7000/8000. Yet you said you had no problems w/ your 8000, so I guess it's a YMMV deal.

Sorry for making it more confusing. Go to the dwoodsz guy at ebay he explains the difference between the cables there and he shows pictures of the different ones too.

I just added 8 songs (at the 64 bit rate) and did it in 2 batches. Add new file then add new file 4 times then reboot phone then start over and it worked fine! Sounds pretty good too! It took about 30 - 40 mins do upload all the songs though...

I couldn't find "dwoodsz" (using that spellling on EBay) as a registered seller. I also tried "dwoodz" that someone else mentioned, but he only has 14 feedbacks.

I wound up bidding on some 6100/7000/8000 data cable. Assuming I win the bid (if not, I'll rebid since I'm in no particular rush), I'll hope that a.) the cable fits the phone and b.) the driver works. Everything else (FutureDial, BitPim, QPST, etc.) I should be able to find from HF.

Thanks.

The cable connector for the 6100 7000 and 8000 are all the same.

Posted by: beowulf7

Thanks, that gives me some nice reassurance.

But some differences I've noticed as I research data cables is that some 6100/7000/8000 data cables can charge your phone via the USB whereas some that don't advertise this feature, I assume can't.

BTW, the EBay seller some of you're referring to is dwoodsz-com.

I received a PM from a nice member here to help sort this out. But I don't see him selling a VX8000 data cable at the moment.

Posted by: F34R

Here is the ebay store I purchased my cable from.

It does charge via USB, and it included the drivers on a mini cd. It worked perfectly out of the box.

http://stores.ebay.com/Coolwireless

As of yesterday evening, I didnt see any 6100, 7000, or 8000 USB data cables. I paid $5 + $5 s/h.

Posted by: Thundaar

Help!!!

I see we all have the cable and drivers sorted out... Now does ANYONE know how to get the contacts from MS Outlook or the Palm desktop into the phone? I know that bitpim is supposed to but I can't get that part to work.

oh btw the data cable was listed as:
LG VX7000 VX-7000 USB Data and Charging Cable + CD

I'm using the OEM leather case, which serves its purpose pretty well.

Instead of triple posting, why dont you search for the leather case.

Verizon Wireless sells one on their website for $20.00

Here is a link to all their VX 8000 accessories. Took about 2 mins on dialup to find them.

I've never heard of BitPim damaging a phone. But I have QPST can.

I read on here that the vx8000 supports .avi format video. I downloaded the converter but having problems showing the videos on the phone. I can get the phone to play 3g2 videos but they are not clear! the 3g2 is much smaller file but not clear as it should be. Also does anyone know how to change the view settings on the phone, i heard that you can watch the screen wide screen as well. Thanks for the help everyone, I am almost there, hahaha.

as long as you dont put too much stuff on the phone, or you dont delete stuff you arent supposed to, then you'll be fine.

You just select the vx7000 as your phone when using BitPim. Make sure the com port is set on auto, or set correctly. I use auto, and it works fine. Also, you can only use the File System view for the vx8000 with bitpim so far.

Every time I save an image file from my phone to my computer, it won't open. Why is this? I'm using a really old bitpim version, and it's working fine for mp3's / ringers, it has accepted mp3's, mid's, mmf's, and any jpg that I overwrite over the pics I have.

I tried renaming the jpgs to gifs and pngs, still they won't open on my computer. What's going on?

I just ordered the USB cable and CD for my 8000 from ebay (listed as 7000, 8000, 6100 compatible).

Am I right in my assumption that this cable/CD will allow using my 8000 for dialing my own ISP like I did with my LG 4400 and cable?

If so, I assume since the CD says it includes drivers for my 8000 that it will be recognized by the system as a modem? Yes?

Thanks everybody for help in locating this cable. I got mine from twosheaenterprises on ebay.

TIA,

-Frank

Hey I just a few days ago upgraded from the 4400 to the 8000, great phone with many fixes from the 4400 but I had a few questions that I cant seem to get answer. First - on the 4400 i kno i was able to search in the phonebook by number not just name, is this possible on this fone? Also, in GIN it says you can disable apps but I can't seem to find any place to disable them, how do you do this? For memory, I've heard many different numbers on the memory break up inside the fone (partitions or w/e). Does anybody KNOW what the actual definite break up is or is it one of those things that varies or nobody is sure of? Last, I've read people saying that they have tried to put ringtones or wallpaper or w/e on the fone and a message came up saying not enough space. I actually broke my old 4400 by loading up to much wit bitpim, so i didn't think bitpim had this option unless its new since i was using an older version. So I was wondering if anybody could tell me which program actually stops you if you don't have enough memory so that you don't break your fone. Ok thanks for the help in advance.

Not sure if this has been covered yet or not (kinda skimmed through the posts, but didn't see anything).

I'm trying to send myself a ringer to my phone#@vzwpix.com. I keep getting a message telling me that I have a message, and to go to vzwpix.com using a computer with the internet, blah blah blah...

Now, I'm in a non EV-DO market, so I don't know if this has anything at all to do with it, as my V710 worked just fine for getting ringers sent via vzwpix.. I'd email them to myself (phone) and it'd show a message with the file attached...

Am I doing something wrong, or is it possible something is missing from my account, either from being setup wrong, or based on the fact I don't have EV-DO here? I know I was having problems using WAP 2.0 when I tried yesterday, called and they told me they had to add national broadband something or another (at no cost) so that WAP 2.0 would work...

While on that, is WAP only unlimited when you're in an EV-DO market *AND* have VCAST? I emailed CS about it, but really didn't get a concise answer (they told me they added the 'Premium Network Feature' (and said that doesnt cost me either).. So I'm basically wondering, will WAP 2.0 be unlimited in a regular 1X market, or only in an EV-DO market, contingent on you having VCAST on your plans as well?

I have the vcast special with 4 phones share plan and I asked if the net was free for the 2 mos and they assured me it was free for all 4 phones. I live in a non vcast area with just the 1x. (No wonder they give vcast for free! It wont be in this area for another year lol)

There's a new version of bitpim today which supports the VX8000 now.

The table says that it supports phonebook, ringers and wallpaper.

I'm expecting my VX8000 tomorrow, so I've never used it with bitpim, but does that mean that we wouldn't have to go through all those crazy steps on page 1 of this thread just to load ringers and wallpaper?

Can we now just select the file and upload it with bitpim (like I can do with my VX4400 now)?

What about mp3s for music (not ringtones)? Can you upload those with bitpim now?

Anyone tried it yet?

Thanks.

Thanks for the heads up! It's about time BitPim was supported.

I did a quick search and found this link that describe the changes in this latest version - 0.7.29.

Quote:
Changes in 0.7.29

* BitFling now works with SPH-A620 and probably other Samsung phones.
* Added the Task Todo tab to the main BitPim display.
* Added the SMS tab to the main BitPim display.
* Cosmetic and usability tweaks from Adit Panchal
* There is now a table in the online help that lists which BitPim features are supported by which phones. The page also points to what features will be supported and when.
* LG VX8000 Initial support for this phone added
* Samsung SCH-A650/A670Added Task Todo and SMS support.
* Samsung SPH-A620/VGA1000 Camera picture filenames now use caption name instead of timestamp based filename.

Wahooooo! 7.29!!! I've been waiting forever it seems (like 2 weeks) I can't wait to try it out.

Posted by: efski

Hmmmm ver 7.29 phone book still not working for me. The Only thing working is the filesystem like 7.25.

Posted by: yanksrock

Ya my phonebook won't transfer either, very annoying. However, the ringtones and wallpaper does work but its slow. Personally, I've come to like QPST because it has a faster transfer rate. Anyway, with the fone overall, I was watching the memory and it seems that the BREW memory includes pics and ringtones and overall is just video and tunes. The only thing is that I added a bunch of ringtones using Bitpim (not the filesystem method) and I was able to watch the percent of the memory increase, but then when I restarted the fone the ringers were still there while the memory was back to the 25% memory from before I added the ringtones. Anybody know why this is or how to fix it???

Posted by: efski

well at least your getting ringtones and wall paper to work. Although I am used to just using the filesystem to load those so its not that big of a deal that they dont work for me. I just wish the phone book part was.

I tried the phonebook and it works OK. Some of the column names are different than the phones and the number titles aren't the same so transfer doesn't know what to do. But it did put all 200 names in for me!

^^^Did you un install the older version before loading the newer one? I get an exception error every time I try the phone book upload or down load option.
