So what is the verdict on this latest version (.29) of BitPim? If it's working better than .25, can Brandondork or a moderator update the first post of this thread accordingly? Thanks.

(I'm still waiting for my data cable to arrive.)

Posted by: Brandondork

the new bitpim.... ehh. I've updated my phonebook onto BitPim and I've sent a picture to my phone using Bitpim but that's about it. Everything else on bitpim I use just like .25 with using the tree and saving stuff that way. There is no Video or mp3 upload like there is for wallpaper or ringtone, so it's an improvement, I support it but it doesn't do it all like it did for the 6000.

Posted by: beowulf7

I just got my data cable in the mail today! I will try to install the driver and get the latest BitPim and see how it goes. Wish me luck.

Posted by: thesupe87

Oh cool about the new version.

I actually started messing with this phone with an OLLLLD like 5.something version of bitpim, it Worked! I had it like 2 yrs ago, since I had my t720. Then I installed the newest one, and only diff was that it allowed me to actually OPEN the picture files that I saved from my phone, whereas in the old bitpim version I could never open them.

Posted by: beowulf7

Holy crap, BitPim is almost 8 MB in size! I was thinking it would only be a couple MB. No biggie, though, since it only took me all of one minute to download it.

I will now try to install the driver for my data cable and hope that the COM port recognizes my phone.

Posted by: beowulf7

I was able to install the driver from the CD, connect the data cable to my phone, and then install BitPim 0.7.29 and selected "LG-VX8000 (Verizon Wireless)". (I left "Com Port" as "auto", which is the default setting.)

It took me about 8 min. to back up my phone book, wallpaper, and ringtone - about 5 MB of stuff (which were the only 3 choices that were selectable from the "Get Data from Phone" option). I then selected "View filesystem" from the "View" menu and expanded every single directory - there must be dozens.

Now how can I retrieve the video files I already have on my phone that I downloaded via VCast? I found out that they're located in the "/brew/verizonmediaplayer/downloads" directory. When I right clicked on a .wmv file, and selected "Save...", I received the following "Exception":
"An unexpected exception has occurred.
Please see the help for details on what to do."
And there are a bunch of error messages for various line #s. How can I save these files?

Thanks!

Posted by: beowulf7

I was able to copy my first MP3 song over to my phone. Man, you guys weren't kidding - it does take forever! I think the 2.6 MB file took about 15 min. to transfer over to the phone due to the slow COM port. I'm about to send another MP3 over right now (about 2.7 MB in size), but I'll grab a bite to eat and maybe read a mag. as BitPim does its thing.

BTW, I've encoded my MP3s at 128 kbps, but maybe I should save them as 96 kbps. I'm debating this. Ideally, I should send over the same song and encode each one at various quality settings and see if I can hear the difference in quality via the speakers and headset.

I also was able to transfer over a ringtone. No more paying VZW 25 cents per ringtone for that "privilege" anymore! Thank you, HF!

Posted by: yanksrock

The max sound quality that the speaker can will play is 64 so there is no point in trying higher. And if you want a faster solution try QPST as long as you don't mind using the filesystem method. QPST works much faster so if your ok wit it then use it.

Thanks. Have you confirmed with your ears that the speakers can't play anything higher quality than 64 kbps encoding? What about when played with the stock headset?

I've heard QPST is a little riskier to use, so I don't mind the wait with BitPim. But if/when I transfer movies, I guess 10-20 MB files via BitPim will literally take all day or night, so I'd then have to use QPST.

Posted by: yanksrock

No I havent confirmed wit my ears & ive heard that headphones can be better quality but 64 sounds fine for me.

QPST is only really risky wen u use things other than the filesystem but its up to u

That's what I did, and I concluded that you can tell a Teeny diff with the higher kps but it's not really worth the extra space you can save with 64 quality. The headphones you can tell more of a diff, but it's not like theres much room to be fussy, if you want anything near 15-20 full songs.

I'm downloading the new bitpim version, just so I can backup my address book, but I still also have to install QPST and see what else I can mod :P

I see it as a classic quality vs. quantity trade off and we're all trying to find the best compromise. If I get the time, I'll take a certain song that has a variety of instruments and male and female vocalists and encode the files at 160, 128, 96, and 64 kbps and then send them over to my phone to see if I can hear the difference via the speakers and the headset.

Everything works great w/ the new version of BitPim (.29) - ringers, images, filesystem, etc..
except for the phonebook.

Every time I try to send the phonebook from bitpim to the phone, I get an Exception. I look at the pbook on my phone and it only has a small percentage of the numbers from bitpim in it.

Any ideas why?

I bought a data cable that was labeled for "VX6100/VX7000", but everyone said it would work fine for the VX8000. As far as transferring the phone book, ringtones, wallpaper pictures, and .mp3 and .3gp files go, it does work fine.

However, the data cable does not seem to recharge my phone. Whenever it's connected, the phone indicates that it's done charging, even though I know the battery level was less than 4. This is no big deal for me since I can use the normal charger, but I just thought it was odd.

Other than that minor issue, the data cable + driver + BitPim 0.7.29 are working nicely.

i have that same problem with my cable i can transfer everything but it just wont charge, who did you buy your cable from ebay from? i bought mines from "accessoryexport".... maybe VX7000 cables can fit but it wont charge the phone, who knows??? but like you said i have the regular charger so im fine...

My cable charges fine! I got it on ebay from dwoodsz. He has a www.dwoodsz.com too. The software he sends with it is old and outdated though. But easy to find on the web. He does include about 20,000 ringtones and wallpaper though.

I bought my phone from "eforcity". In his defense, he did not mention "VX8000" in that auction. I bought this data cable based on a recommendation from someone in this thread, whose name currently escapes me.

No multimedia files - such as ringtones and wallpapers - were included, but they weren't mentioned in the auction. I make my own ringtones since I know best what music and which 30-sec piece of a certain track I want. And I can make them higher quality (96 kbps) than what most "realtone ringtones" come with. Having the properly sized wallpapers is nice, but I can easily find images from Google and crop/size them as 176 x 144.

Posted by: Frank S

Simple question I have not seen specifically addressed here:

Can BitPim with the USB cable be used to transfer pics from the phone to your computer?

-Frank

Posted by: yanksrock

Ya Frank, the easiest was is to go into the filesystem so u can just get the one pic u want by right clicking and pressing backup or you can simply "Get Phone Data" for the wallpaper and it should show up there. However, the Get Phone Data way may be a pain because the files are so large and Bitpim is slow but hey if your patient then go ahead and wait. My recomendation would be to get QPST and ues the filesystem on it which is much faster. As long as you only use EFS Explorer in QPST and not mess with the other things in there its no less complicated than Bitpim

Also, question to everyone else, I kno everyone seems to be saying the best size for wallaper is 176 x 144 or 176 x 184 but it seems to be ehhh. For example, when you view it in the gallery it doesnt cover the entire screen like a pic from the fone does. So i transfered over a pic that was about 300 x 200 or somethin like dat, nothin too speicifc and it seemed to fit the screen much better with better quality so im thinkin its not worth it to cut it down so percisely and instead leave it about 100 pixels larger and just transfer it with the filesystem. Any other ideas on this?

Posted by: Sqube

yanksrock, did it crop your picture any or did it just compress it so that it fit properly?

Posted by: yanksrock

idk, I was using the new version of bitpim which makes you go through all that stuff wit tryin to crop it so i made it as big as possible and it said it was still that size but idk. I'm pretty sure it was stil 176 x 184 but w/e once I set it to wallpaper its fine, its just in the gallery its not full screen.

I also tried 176 (width) x 184 (length). I don't think that would work. I'm going to try a 1.22:1 ratio (wide) for some other pics.

Also walmart.com Music section there sound samples are the perfect format and length for great mp3 ringers for those of you who dont know.

You can email yourself ringers too. Rename an mp3 or wav or whatever to .mid and email it to your10digitnumber@vzwpix.com it will cost you 25 cents each for pix usage if you dont have a plan.

VX8000 is by far the best phone out on the market. I am in charge of the Verizon accounts at work and I get to try every model and the 6100 just plain sucks and the 7000 is decent but the 8000 is definitely the best. And for all you people that complain about its size. I think its more confortable that way, you dont fat finger keys and you got a much bigger clearer screen and sound and so on... If you hold it side by side with a 6100 there the same size besides the 6100 being rounded edges and not squared off like the 8000 so it aint much different.

Had to get that out I cant see seeing all these people making the 8000 look out to be a giant brick or something.

when I email the mp3 to your10digitnumber@vzwpix.com does this go right to my phone or do I have to go somewhere to get it?? Help!

Posted by: skchan

you have to view the email and save the mp3s

It said something about invalid file

it has to be named as a .mid not .mp3 so just if the file was blah.mp3 just rename it on ur computer as blah.mid and then email it

Well, FWIW, I have my phone set to "PC Connection", not R232. Maybe it depends on your cable, I dunno. But mine works fine for BitPim and as a modem. I've not tried it with QPST yet.

I can use the file system method of saving *.jpg and *.3g2 movies to my computer. Unfortunately, so far, I have not been able to get my computer to play the 3g2 movies. But the pics are fine.

Are you able to send/receive picture messages? Make sure you have this service enabled (call VZW) to allow you to be able to receive attachments when you e-mail your phone.

The latest Apple QuickTime 6.5.2 didn't work for you to play .3gp/.3g2 files? Even if you have ver. 6.5.2, make sure you update it.

No, it didn't. I have updated to 6.5.2. Someone suggested un-installing and reinstalling. Maybe I'll try that next. Question, is there any particular file name extension that I have to use?

Anyway, if I open the player and chose to open the 3g2 file, it just says "could not open <filename.3g2> because this isn't a file that Quicktime understands".

I called LG and asked them this (as verizon doesn't sell them for any phone that can use vcast). They said one will be coming out in about a month or so ($70.00). I asked if the 7000 kit will work and they said it won't. I haven't tried the 7000 kit because LG said it won't work and I didn't want to spend the $ if it didn't.

All of the .mp3s i'm uploading with Bitpim 7.29 end up going into my ringtones folder, is there anyway for them to go into the tunes folder?

Thanks

ya with the filesystem, follow the tutorial at the beginning of this thread, it works really well.

to be in the tune folder, you would have to upload your songs in the /brew/shared/aod folder.

It may not exist so you have to create it in some cases.

I had Apple QT 6.0.x and when I first upgraded to 6.5.2 (I didn't uninstall; instead, I did the upgrade option via QT), it still didn't work. Then I upgraded a few weeks later, then I was finally able to watch .3gp/.3g2 files. So you should try to update again and see if you can play those files. Are you sure the files you have are legitimate .3g2 files vs. someone just renaming the extension?

You're welcome. Glad to hear that it worked! It's kind of silly that Apple didn't update the version # for QuickTime when getting that latest .3gp/.3g2 update.

Posted by: bjafari

Is there anyway to make the songs loop when using the mp3 player? It plays one song and then stops until you press a key.

Posted by: yanksrock

hey I changed the setting in the hidden menu to allow video clips up to 25 seconds but when i try to record them like this they oddly over and over again stop at 15. any ideas for reasons why or how to fix this?

Posted by: dahrailsin

Yo bjafari, for the mp3 player option, you have to select "Play All" then select the repeat option. For the 25 sec. video hack yanksrock, it only works if you focus on a still moving object and it's rare that it goes past the 15 minute mark.

Posted by: yanksrock

ok thx

Posted by: twodogsfaqn

What is the hidden menu for the 25 sec video?? Where is it on the phone?

Posted by: dahrailsin

Bong! There it is. They spelled recording wrong.

Posted by: davecarr01

OK, The new Bitpim is nice. I like how I can drag and drop the MP3 clips I downloaded fraom Walmart.com and it converts them for me.

I have not seen this addressed here, so I will ask:

How do I transfer games from my old 4400?

I uploaded the .mif files from the 4400, and downloaded them in BITPIM into the BREW directory, where the MIF files are for the couple of games I downloaded on the 8000. But even after rebooting the phone, when I got to GIN, they are not there. I remember in the 4400 all I had to do was add the MIF file, and it would go out and download the game.

Anyone know the proper steps? I have 11 paid for games that are wasting away on a phone I no longer use

Posted by: flyinw

hey i just tried it too and the ticker says 0/25 secs but when u record it only goes to 14 secs. mmmmmmm

it would be nice to be able to take 25 secs

Posted by: yanksrock

Sux for your 11 games then, no you can't transfer them the 4400 was a Brew 1 fone, the 8000 is a Brew 2 or 3 fone and in addition to that in order for the 8k to display a game it needs to show the game as being downloaded in its history so even if you got a 8000 game online from somebody else it wont do you any good because of the history thing and because the games are encrypted with info bout ur fone so until this version of brew is cracked it wont work. They are acutaly pretty close I've heard to crackin it but w/e for now the only possible thing you can do is try to trick vzw on the fone to lettin u dl them again and then get a refund. I was able to get a bunch of free ringtone credits that i had left on my 4400 onto the 8000 just by callin them up and tellin them that they werent used so ya gl wit dat but other than that no luck sry

For dat 25 sec thing ya i agree, I'm guessing there is somehow a way to change the max file size of videos through the filesystem since that is actually what is limiting it but until then I don't think there is much you can do. Ill prob look through the filesystem and try to figure this out but idk im sure some1 will figure it out eventually.

Also, anybody know the official rule on whether the 8k can be used as a modem? When i bought the fone the representive said i def. could and that it wuld be no prob but ive heard that they are starting to monitor and suspend people who do so idk, any ideas?

Posted by: spook45

I just set my 8K up as a modem this weekend. Works good except it will sometimes not come out of "Dormant" mode. (See my earlier post in this thread). Other than that it chugs right along using the 1X setting at about 70 to 90 Kbps.

New version of bitpim today.
Changlog:
http://www.bitpim.org/testhelp/

Looks like we might be able to upload wallpapers to the phone without bitpim forcing a resize/crop.

Will have to test that and see how it works.

If that works, that's a nice addition.

Yes, it works. Hold shift down when you click add and you don't have to re-size your wallpapers. It'll just load it up to the filesystem exactly as it is on your PC. That's helpful especially since I don't think bitpim is set to crop it to the right size.

Can someone update the first post now that bitpim supports the VX8000?

Posted by: flyinw

Nice find on Bitpim Lex!! That makes things much better.

Just an FYI on data cables...I have Verizons data cable from their mobile office kit that supports the 6100 and 7000. The cable has two grooves and fits perfectly(like it was made for the 8k) I'm not sure if they are all like that but a 15 day trial might prove to be worth it. Also the drivers they give on the disk worked well also once i got bitpim 7.29

Also i have animated gif's on my phone now , but has anyone been able to figure out why it stops moving and how to prevent this. I have turned the power save mode off and nothing different with the animation. One thing i did notice though is that when the phone is charging the animation is flawless.

Did your cable have two slots or three?
(If it had three, did you have to shave it down?)

My data cable has two notches, which fits my phone perfectly. The only shaving I do is in the morning before I brush my teeth. OK, that was lame.

Looks like we might be able to upload wallpapers to the phone without bitpim forcing a resize/crop.

Will have to test that and see how it works.

If that works, that's a nice addition.

Great call! If you or someone can verify that this works flawlessly w/ our phones, please report back. Also, let us know if you upgraded via BitPim (i.e. Help ==> Check for Update) itself or uninstalled .7.29 and installed .7.30. Thanks.

BTW, here is the version history.

Posted by: beowulf7

Man, it was a bugger trying to d/l ver. 0.7.30. OK, so I went to my current ver. 0.7.29 and checked for an update. It found it and immediately took me to their Web site. I had to try a couple different mirrors before I was finally able to d/l it. This ver. is 19 kB larger than the previous one.

Below is a list of changes in ver. 0.7.30, in case you can't/don't want to check out the link I provided above.

Changes in 0.7.30

* Added speed dial, wallpaper, and ringtone info to vCard Import/Export.
* Added Contacts CSV Export.
* Added Phone Info Dialog feature. Supported phones include the Samsung SCh-A310/SCH-A650/A670.
* Added a feature that allows users to add raw/unprocessed image files. This feature is invoked by pressing a shift key while clicking on the 'Add' button. On the Samsung SCH-A670, this feature can be used to add GIF or animated GIF files, which are not directly supported by BitPim.
* LG Phones When corrupt data is detected on the phone you will be given a detailed help page about it rather than just an exception.
* Samsung SPH-A460 Can read/write phonebook and calendar. See the Samsung model notes for information about oddities when writing the phonebook to the phone.
* Samsung SPH-A460 Read todolist from phone
* LG VX6100 Set maximum filename length for ringers and wallpaper to 20 characters. (John O'Shaughnessy)
* LG VX6100 Increased wallpaper size from 128x148 to 132x148 (and 132x160 for fullscreen) (John O'Shaughnessy)
* LG TM520/VX10 Support for these phones will be removed in 0.7.31 unless someone steps forward to maintain them.

Regarding the suggested "make a complete backup of the phone before starting",

Can the phone be backed up with BitPem?
Or does one need QPST?

You can back up wallpapers/photos, ringers, contacts and I think the calendar with bitpim without even going into the filesystem.

Mp3s you'd have to use the filesystem.

I don't think you could do any of that any easier with qpst.

Most recent VX8000 driver directly from LG:

USB Driver is on the right.

Works fine with my cable.

Can someone edit this into the first post?

Did you use the USB driver it shipped with? Or did you download a driver?

I used the USB driver that came in the CD, which is kind of hidden in the packaging and there's a note that tells you that.

The instructions on the package itself conflicts w/ the instructions in the text files of the CD. The latter worked for me. Go in the LG directory and run that executable file, which will load the necessary driver(s).

I'm tempted to install ver. 0.7.30 but am not sure if I should uninstall 0.7.29 or if I can simply install this new ver. "on top" of the old version, which would ideally overwrite the old files.

Posted by: lexluthor

I installed 7.30 over 7.29, no problems. That should work fine.

I also used the drivers that came with my cable.

I updated to the drivers on the LG site. Changed someone of the naming around in my device manger, but all works fine. I'm a tinkerer though. I like to use the newest drivers, but if an older driver is working fine, probably no need to change.

Thanks for sharing that. I'll upgrade to .7.30 w/o uninstalling .7.29 sometime this weekend.

Since the driver seems to be working fine, I don't think I'll mess around w/ that unless the new driver offers something new, such as a more efficent (read: faster) trasnfer. But I don't think the new LG driver allows for that, right?

Also, if anyone has figured out how to get VCast .wmv files from the phone to a computer hard drive, please let us know. When I tried w/ BitPim .7.29, it couldn't do it; I'm assuming it won't work w/ .7.30 either.

With the driver on my CD, there were a couple of times where an upload or download "stalled" and I had to close bitpim and reopen in.

That hasn't happened yet with the new driver (I did use the old one a lot more though).

Speed is about the same.

I see. Knock on wood, I never had any transfer problems w/ the "old" driver, so I think I'll stay w/ it for now. But I also have a laptop that I can try to play around w/ and maybe install the new LG driver on it.

Posted by: beowulf7

I just installed BitPim ver. 0.7.30 on top of ver. 0.7.29. In other words, I didn't bother uninstalling the older version. It seemed to have installed just fine.

The GUI and functions appear to be the same. But it's nice being able to save the phone book to a .csv, which can be then opened via MS Excel.

My brother has had his LG VX6000 for almost 2 years now. I told him about all the wonderful things one can do w/ the phone and BitPim. He doesn't really like reading/replying to threads, so I did some legwork for him, got him to buy a data cable from EBay (he didn't even have an EBay account until a couple weeks ago), and gave him this latest BitPim.

So far, so good for him. He was able to transfer his pics over, but we're trying to find out how he can play his .qcp (Qualcomm's PureVoice) files. I don't know how to play them from this phone, but I never bothered looking into it. Does anyone know? Thanks.

PRL stands for Preferred Roaming List. You can find out what version you have on your LG VX8000 by doing the following.

- Turn on the phone.
- Hit "OK" to access the MENU.
- Hit the right arror twice to access the SETTINGS & TOOLS menu.
- Select option 4 for System.
- Select option 2 for Device Info.
- Select option 2 for SW Version.
- Look for "PRL Version".

In my location, I just did the *228-2 update and now am at PRL 50266.

I don't know how the numbering system works. I always see a PRL sticky in the VZW forum, such as this thread.

i noticed with some of the phones there are ways to get free internet. is there a way to do this with the 8000?

thanks

Posted by: Spooksmcgee

Can anyone explain to me how to activate the speakerphone on it? I searched through the index in the user manual and there is nothing for speakerphone.

Also, when I push the side button to activate voice dialing, it says "there are no voice dials," even though I have recorded several in my contacts and they show up when I view the editing option for my contacts. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

To use the LG 7000/8000 for VZW network 3G 1x DATA connection:

1) Buy USB data cable and install drivers for it.

2) Create a dialup connection per the following.

Init String: AT$QCMDR=3
Dial: #777
userID: <10digitCellNumber>@vzw3g.com (i.e. 1234567890@vzw3g.com)
Password: vzw

i'm not sure what doing that does, but this is what i mean, except for the 8000 instead of the 6100. the settings there didn't seem to work for me...

You basically want free WAP. What Frank explained is how to use your VZW service and phone as an ISP w/ your computer.

i guess, not exactly sure what wap is. i want to be able to access the internet on my phone for free once my 2 month free deal is over with. anyone know how to do it?

thanks

I haven't set up free WAP yet, so I'm not sure how to do it. (I haven't bothered searching for it, either.)

This instruction should definitely be placed on p. 1. I haven't seen a moderator in this thread - ever - and Brandondork (thread starter) hasn't updated his first post in a while. I guess he got really busy.

I haven't tried this out, but I assume that the phone's camera can detect if what it's recording is in motion or not. So if you record something that's not moving, it maxes out at 15 sec. But w/ the "hack" if you record something that's moving, it can go for up to 25 sec. That's the way I interpret dahrailsin's statement.

Posted by: JohnDaddyo

well that is simple enough to test/try but nahh, that
didn't keep the recording going.
I need to find out what thread that post was in and ask him.

It doesnt make a difference if there is something moving in the background or not, regardless of if the phone is set to 15 or 25 sec. The 25sec "hack" doesnt do squat except to display 25 on the screen instead of 15. The phone still stops after 15 seconds...try it out and you will see.

Posted by: JohnDaddyo

what he said

Posted by: Thundaar

In fact when you go back to the screen where you pick the seconds length, it is always back on 15. Doesn't matter how I exit or end or back up it is always on 15 when I go back. I think it is only gonna let 15 sec vids record no matter what.

I see. So the "25" just changes how it looks on the time meter, but in actuality, it's only 15 sec. Then why would someone even bother changing it?

I haven't even shot 1 video clip yet (don't really care about that feature right now), so I'm pretty clueless when it comes to video on the VX8000.

Hey Spliff, is the software by SmithMicro? If it is I e-mailed them and asked the same question. The responce is below. By the way go to lg website and download the drivers for the 8000 first. here is the driver site:

http://us.lgservice.com/index_b2c.jsp

Here is the response from SmithMicro:

The LG VX8000 is a supported phone.

NOTE: You will need to make sure that the Disk 1 CD is labeled as VLG1002 or VLGPB03.

Let us know if you need any additional information.

Thank you,

the latest version 7.30

once in the program, with your phone connected of course, go to the File System tab/Brew/Media you'll see an existing 3g2 file. Right click on it to Save or Overwrite (add something of your own).
I copied and pasted this info below from someone else.

good luck.

Video:

Here are the steps

*record something, for like a second. It doesn't matter.

*Download something in Avi. format (or convert video to avi)

*Now if it’s not Avi. format and you need a program to convert whatever file to Avi. then this is what I recommend.

" STOIK Video Converter 2 "

Pictures:

*Take a certain picture of whatever

*Save it, then use BitPim.

*Go to the “dload” tree

*Then open the “img” tree

*Then find that picture you just took, and right click on that file.

*Select “overwrite” and replace it with the picture you want.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Music/Ringtones:

*In ringtones, click on “record new” and record whatever.

*Go into BitPim and open up the “dload” tree.

*Then open up the “snd” tree

*Find that voice recording you did, and right click on it.

*Select “Overwrite”

*Find your ringtone and select it.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Music/Tunes:

For your mp3 player in the phone this is a little more difficult than putting ringtones on.

*First go into your BitPim and click on the “dload” tree

*Then the first file you see is “aod.dat” DELETE IT (this refreshes every restart)
*Now close the “dload” tree and open the “brew” tree
*Look near the bottom and you’ll see the “shared” tree, open it.
*Now open the “aod” tree.
*Right click on the “aod” tree and click on “New File”
*Find the Mp3 you want and upload it.
*Now once you finished uploading, restart BitPim and your phone. Then do the whole process over again.
(Now you can upload any mp3 at any quality. All my mp3s are 128, but that is taking up a lot of space, so I’m considering reloading them at 64.)
(Also if you upload something BIG like I have the 7 minute Metallica – One song there, if you upload a large song like this and you noticed your BitPim is probably frozen. Just unplug your phone and restart BitPim and your phone, and you’ll notice the is on there)

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Posted by: Thundaar

There is also a real good site to download and put into your phone 3gp movies here:

http://www.nemadroldocs.com/vx8000movies/

Posted by: majesty1900

I am able to receive large 3gp videos (130kb and greater) on my VX7000 that I send to it by email from my computer. My friend that has a VX8000 can't receive the same files when I email them to his phone. His account is set up for PIX/Flix and he can receive videos I send to him from my phone. Is the VX8000 limited to the size of a video it can receive from email, while my vx7000 is not limited? Has anybody else tried this? what size files are you emailing to your phone? Anyone have similiar problems?

hey guys,

I need some urgent help w/ my 8k, it fell in a puddle of water..and it hasnt been turning on, all that happens is a white screen comes up, and the verizon sign, and thats it...any suggestions on how to fix this? I also tried getting a new phone from Verizon, but unfortunately, the warranty doesn't cover what happened to my phone. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

thanks,

Put it to dry .. remove backing and battery ... leave open as if you were talking on the phone .. best place is on top of a towel over the heater ... Also I wouldn't have told verizon a thing and just said phone doesnt work .. Thast what insurance is for .. its in case shyt happens . And quite frankly ... Shyt just happened ...

You don't'/can't.

Have to pony up the GIN fee to Verizon to get games on the phone.

Nahhhhh .. This is the age of technology . There has to be a way of uploading games to phone with out giving verizon my money.

I successfully added my first MP3 tune following the insructions on the first page of this thread:

==========
*First go into your BitPim and click on the “dload” tree

*Right click on the “aod” tree and click on “New File”
*Find the Mp3 you want and upload it.
*Now once you finished uploading, restart BitPim and your phone. Then do the whole process over again.
==========

But, I cannot seem to add any more songs.

Every time I try to add the second song, I get an error. The error message looks like:

thats right there confuses me and i have use the program several times with various phones .... What version are you using ? I'm using BitPim Version 0.7.29 - official ..... when i open it i click ringers which shows me mp3's i already moved or altered . But lets say it empty . i then click ADD and browse thru my machine to where i have my ringtones located. I then click Data => a small window pops up i click the option i want to use which for this task would be Ringtone checked box ADD .. Its that simple .. Now if your ring tone is too big it wont send ... try a smaller 1 ..

Posted by: Thundaar

I use ver .30 and it works perfectly. Are you trying to add a ringtone or a mp3 tune that you play from the outside screen?

Posted by: holla123

I am using BitPim version .30

I am trying to add a MP3 song so that I can play it from the front/outside of the phone (with the flip closed).

On the outside playlist, I am able to play the one song I downloaded successfully. But that is it. I am unable to add anymore songs.

I figure, if my phone <--> PC connection was wrong, I would not have been able to download the first song. But I was able to. But why can't I add more songs?

Posted by: Thundaar

What I would try is delete the mp3 you up-loaded already. re-bood phone/computer/bitpim. Then try to upload another (different song) file. If that doesn't upload then try the original one that worked already. If that does than something is corrupt with the other mp3 files. Is the size waaaaay to large. 3 megs per file (or less)is about what you want because there is only like 46 megs available. That includes your pix and flix too. You can check avail memory by:
press OK
press left twice to get to GIN
press right soft key (info)
press 2
see if you have any room left!

Posted by: holla123

Okay, I think I have figured out the problem. It seems if the name of the mp3 file is too long, the transfer craps out.

I just shortened the names of additional songs and it worked out fine.

Plus, I was able to transfer multiple songs at once without having to restart phone and BitPim after each song.

Posted by: Thundaar

Yaaaaay!
.

.
Remember... don't go over the total mb limit on the phone in that area. Everyone says it will make the phone not even turn on!!

Thundar ... There is no such word as cant. Now maybe not with that program but with which program can we send games to this phone.

Posted by: Thundaar

No, really, you can't put games into the 8000. If you were to go to GIn and purchase a game. You would not be able to find all the file info you need to transfer it to another phone. I looked into this as I had to get my phone replaced about 1 month after I bought it. I called tech support on this, I called LG on this. I asked them if I had a 7000 phone and upgraded to an 8000 phone how would I transfer the games as well as any other apps and they said "sorry you'll just have to contact the vendor and/or purchase them again. I searched this forum on this subject too and EVERYONE has said "it can't be done, sorry".

Soooooo if you find a way to do this PLEASE tell me!!

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Well I know 1 thing tech support sucks . Most there dont know didley . But I wont stop in my search until I get the solution and I will gladly share what I learn with all.

Posted by: firebush

Well i'm having a few problems.. I've gone through all the steps, downloaded all the stuff.

My phone will absolutely not get recognized. It gets recognized by the computer, but BitPim will not auto detect it.

It says COM 1 port is open. But the data cable i have, just like one that has been posted in this thread a few times is a USB not a communications port cable. So when i check for open ports all i get is the COM 1 port, and obviously, thats not the type of cable i have.

This is really frustrating because i just went to VZW and bought a data cable for 42 fricken dollars.

NVM - Seems i solved my own problem.

Got this from another thread:

Have any of you been working on cracking brew 2? The only possible way to do it, is to setup a GIN server on your computer, reassign the ip that your phone connects to.

Us over at brewbackups, with various programmers in #phonephreakz on us.wondernet.nu, had been working on it with high hopes for three months. Someone began coding a server... various people were comparing files... various people were attempting to edit maps and such...

People, in fact, figured out that there are two different encryption keys placed onto the programs. You phone has an encryption key on it that the gin programs get encrypted against, which uses your esn.
You can download a gin app on your phone, copy it to your computer, then copy it back to your phone; but you can't edit the various files at all while they're on your computer, or they will get auto-deleted.

They beat us with brew 2, i gave up hope a long time ago. The only possible way, would be to emulate the GIN server. which someone was working on (from the irc channel). He was attempting to capture IP packets by using his computer as the middle man; but verizon intelligently blocks IPs that aren't from one of their phones. so he couldn't do it.
the thing that sucks about this, is i know they used to not do this (I pinged the GIN server a long time ago); but then they must've figured out that this was pretty much the only way that people could defeat the BREW security. When I tried to ping it again, it wasn't accepting my packets. whores.

So... long story short. You can't defeat the BREW security juggernaut.
only viable options ever:
1) create you own gin server (failed)
2) mod chip your phone (this would work, but it would require a severe amount of reverse engineering, and i don't think there are enough programmers out there that actually care; i know i wouldn't)
3) brew 3 is gonna come out, and have totally different security
4) it's my phone, if i really really really really really want to use games or programs on it, i'll pay for it... all this crap just so i can play some "two towers"? no thanks
5) I'm buying that motorola v710 when it comes out shortly, as will a lot of other people.....

feel free to work your ××× off trying to figure this ×××× out... but i'm telling you, i've spoken to some of the hardest working "phreaks" out there, and they all gave up.

Peace,
Matt

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Well I wont give up as long as I have boredom time ... So it may take a week a month a year or longer but 1 day me or sum1 else will find a loop hole ... and the security they use has quiet a few loop holes we need to just find them .

Im gonna keep knocking my head til i figure it out.

I have an LG XV8000 and I just bought the DataPilot LG Kit which comes with the cable and the software. I installed the software, installed all the updates, installed all the drivers, did everything but the software just will not find my phone.

I've gone into settings and selected the make as LG and model as VX8000 and it just does not detect the phone. An error message keeps coming up saying "Phone was not found. Please make sure that phone is connected properly and is supported for this feature."

How can I get DataPilot to recognize my phone?

Please help.

Thanks!

I asked the same question a while back and then emailed SmithMicro who supplies the software for the kit (around here anyway) and this is thier response:

The LG VX8000 is a supported phone.

NOTE: You will need to make sure that the Disk 1 CD is labeled as VLG1002 or VLGPB03.

Let us know if you need any additional information.

I am well aware that the LG VX8000 is a supported phone, that's why I bought it.

Does anyone know why my PC/DataPilot isn't detecting that the phone is connected to the cable? I even have LG VX8000 selected on the scroll menu in DataPilot and it still doesn't detect it. I also downloaded BitPim and BitPim doesn't detect it either.

Thanks

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Send me a copy of data pilot and ill test it out for you .. But I have gotten that phone to work quiet well with bitpim tho ...

Also make sure you are using a cable thats a straight cable with no additins to it ...

Ya does any body know the official rules of using the phone as a modem cuz i've heard so many different stories. When I bought the fone I was told I could use it as a modem same way i had wit my old 4400, then I called vzw and they said it couldnt me done, morons. So anyway I was in a place with EVDO access and tried it out for like an hour each night for 3 nights (so i t would use nights and weekends) but the min. didnt even show up on my bill. when I got back home I was talkin on some yahoo 8k forum and I was told that the reason the time didn't show up on the min. is becuz it was using it like a broadband plan. Soo, what i think is that we are allowed to use it as a modem for normal 1x speeds and u have to disable evdo and if you get caught using the evdo and broadband which they scan for then they will discontinue ur service immediately. This correct?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

To the best of my knowledge ... Its your phone your contract your service . You arent or rather you cant use the cell with out them knowing so I dont see the worry . As far as I can tell and this is my opinion is that once you connect to your cell you using your cell's service wheter its as a dial-up modem or its own internet connection and all is legal .. That i if you are paying a bill ...

Posted by: yanksrock

hmm well i guess idk they r dum and dont kno wut is goin on so i dont see how they can really screw me over but idk bout u but i dont wanna get billed the $80 month broadband fee or get suspended

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

None of us want to be billed but if they bring it up say u didnt know .. Tats honest I dont no that you dont know .... LOL ...

Well, the problem isn't with DataPilot, because I downloaded BitPim and it wouldn't recognize that my phone was connected as well.

What cable are you using ... is it 1 straight continuous wire or is there a bulb in the middle of cable ... ?

It's the cable that comes with the DataPilot LG kit. There's a "bubble" thing in the middle of the cable.

Thanks!

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Thats main problem . In my quest of learning as many phones as possible I have found out that those cables are the hardest to use . The cable has a driver for it self not a driver for the phone .. Then the software reconizes that cable only and the cable reconzes the phone ... Thats your problem .. I brought a few of those cables in the begining whne I first started and quickly learned they are pretty useless . That cable specifically is labeled will only work with datapilot and with a specific phone and you will stiill have issues .. Best cable for the 8000 is sold at verizon ... I have no issues with the cabkles from them with the 4400 / 6000 / 8000 phones .... So get that cabel and bitpim will work easy enought and once drivers are installed they go for all software you use .... So it should then work even easier with datapilot. If you look under mycomputer you should still see the phone/cable showing its there even when not connected ... Thast another reason y I dont like those cables .....

i just bought a usb cable for my vx8000 and it is not working it says it can be recognized and to install software and i downloaded t hat bitpm thing and i aint able to do anything can anyone help me out??

Posted by: ShtyGolfr

Casey... where did you get the cable? Try going to the seller for assistance. You may possibly have an incorrect driver.

Posted by: Thundaar

You can get the 8000 usb drivers directly from LG website at us.lgservice.com

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Folks .. Please use cables with a continuous wire and nothing on the wire ...

Posted by: caseyroyer30

i bought the wire from www.cellphoneshop.com and it said i ts for the phone usb data cable unit. now i went to the lg site and i downloaded it from the lg site the driver, and still it wont recgonize it and is iokay if i put the usb thing in the front? instead the back of the computer?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Yeah its ok ... But does your machine say anything when you connect phone to cable .... ?

Posted by: caseyroyer30

it says it needs to install software but it didnt come with any software to recognise it..

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Software ?????????? .. LOL ... Ok it wants drivers you are using incorrect drivers .. get them off my ftp ...

Posted by: caseyroyer30

can you help i downloaded the driver from the lg site, and what is ftp?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

ok mate ... you need a program called smart ftp ...

http://www.smartftp.com/

once you install it you log onto my ftp with it .... info at the bottom of my name ....

Posted by: caseyroyer30

im in there now what?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

goto lg > goto drivers > download the drivers ...

Posted by: caseyroyer30

there on my desktop and i installed the drivers and it wont let me run the serial converter

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

What cable are you using .. Take a picture of it if possible please..

Posted by: Thundaar

Does the computer make a sound when you plug the phone into it? Does it then say 'found new hardware"? You then need to point the software wizard to where the drivers are put/installed so it can configure them

why are you using the serial converter if you have a usb cable?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Good question by thundaar .. So we are waiting on answers now ...

The only datacables that my local Verizon store has is this one...

I also looked on verizonwireless.com's store and they don't have any other to choose from .

Do you know of any online stores (besides eBay) that sell the cable you recommend?

Thanks a ton!

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

ok ... I remebr posting the exact model # and phone cable number not sure if it was on this thread . I brought my 1st cable for this phone at the verizon stoare and its not the 1 u show ... That cable with the bulb in it is horrible ... Let me locate it agan as i took it back since they charged me $50 and got another for free since im doing moding for a few cell stores ... Let me look mate

Do you know where I can buy it? I can't find it anywhere, the only ones i've found were the ones with the "bubble" in them .

Don't forget to look at the disk #.
Smith Micro is the software mfg right?
I called them and they said it will support the 8000 only if the disk has this:
NOTE: You will need to make sure that the Disk 1 CD is labeled as VLG1002 or VLGPB03.

There is no disk number, the manufacturer is Susteen, never heard of Smith Micro before.

Anyways, i'm returning it. Anyone know where I can buy an "official" data cable like the one pureskills recommended? I can't find one without the bubble anywhere.

Posted by: Thundaar

Thats news.... verizon told me that smith micro was the software.... Thats why I called them, because the box didn't say the 8000 phone. Oh well I got my cable on ebay for 15 bucks. some ppl got the cable for 5 or 10 bucks. All of them have the box in the middle tha I found. Mine has the square box and the red light. I was told this is the charger circutry and has nothing to do with the "seeing" of the phone by the computer.
try www.dwoodsz.com for a cable. He may still have some. his come with some software, ringtones & wallpaper but you can download the latest stuff and bitpim on line anyway. I needed to install the drivers first. Then when the phone is plugged in for the first time you need to point the wizzard to where it was installed to. THEN install bitpim or whatever software.

The cable and software probebly work fine if you install them correctly. Verizon will help you through tech support if you bought it through a verizon store too, so CALL THEM!!!!

What kind of computer system do you have (windows 98, xp?)

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Didnt ned no tech support ... Straight out the box it worked fine .. Goto a different virizon store ...

I am using the DataPilot software and DataPilot cable, this is not a product from Verizon or the company that you are talking about.

I have tried BitPim, it didn't work with that either so it's definitely a problem with the cable. Like I said, i'm returning it and want to buy a cable that doesn't like a bubble thing in the middle like you recommended.

This is just so frustrating. Perhaps I should just buy that bluetooth adaptor instead and it would do the same thing?

Posted by: Thundaar

I don't think its a cable prob. Do you hear the sound when you plug it in? are you using the usb port or serial?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

Well thundar .. Those cables with bubbles you dont get the bloop sound when connecting the phone to them .... Yeah so if he got that sound its a miracle .....

Posted by: Accord32

I found this cable, it's cheap and seems pretty good but I don't think it comes with drivers. If I buy it and don't have drivers, is that a problem? Could I download drivers for it?

Here's a link to the cable: http://www.fortune3.com/~comp66199/...DATA_CABLE.html

get the drivers directly from lg website.

I get the bong when I plug my phone in or un plug it and i have the center charger 'bubble' as you put it

As I remember though... when first installing the drivers I used the usb hub and it wouldn't see the phone so I plugged it in directly to one of the usb ports and then viola!!

Yep drivers will work.
LG does not make a cable directly for the 8000 phone. They are not going to carry cables for the phones that get the vcast because they want you to spend more money using the vcast and high speed evdo stuff. Thats what I was told by verizon tech support numerious times.

Posted by: Thundaar

my error LG MAY make cables but verizon will not carry them....

Accord32 ...... Yes you can use any cable you want without the bubble .... Now on my ftp are all the lg drivers I have to date so feel free to get them when ever you wish ..

there are two types of wires that have a bulge/box in the middle. one that's a serial wire converted to usb wire, and another that's usb wire but charges (the bulge being a chip to regulate the voltage). this guy on ebay sells the second type of wire:

link

everyone recommends against the usb-serial wire because of driver problems. but do you also recommend against the second wire?

Posted by: Thundaar

the bubble has nothing to do with anything except charging the phone... why are you so determined to not use a cable with the bubble. No one else has any problems with them. only the stupid driver install gives every one headaches

But do as you wish as I'm going to stay out of this.. have a great weekend!!

Posted by: caseyroyer30

yah im still having trouble i got the cable from cellphoneshop.com look there under the vx8000 it looks just like a usb cord on one end then on the other it just goes into the phone and i cant get anthing to regonize ive tried it in the back of the comp for the usb port and ive tried it in the front mainly the front still no sucess and it does make the sound on m comp that its looking for hard ware then i do a search for it and it comes up empty?

Posted by: PURESKILLZZZ

The second wire is not what we are doing .... Its a good tool for doing different types of modding but for what we are doing here .. And also there is a type with the bulb that isnt a serial to usb . Those are the most common and get named anything on earth ... I say stay away from all cables with abulb , bubble or what ever you wish to call them unless you doing a specific task with a specific program made for that specific cable ...

Everyone says the bubble messes things up and causes unnecessary problems, and that's exactly what i've experienced. I don't really care if it charges the phone or not, I have a wall charger that I can use if I want to charge it. I'd rather have a cable that doesn't charge your phone and has no problems and allows you to easily use it instead of a cable that's a pain to use... but it charges your phone.
