A102 and text messages names/numbers display

My friend just got an A102 and has found the strangest irritation. When receiving a text message it only displays the senders number and not the corresponding name in the phonebook. Is this by design or does he have some setting wrong. We looked through all the menus and can't figure it out. Anyone have ideas?

Update: my friend says he has found a work around. When someone sends him a SMS he will extract the number and save it. I can't remember if he manually deletes the old number or if the phone prompts him to overwrite it but once he does it is apparently able to associate the SMS with the phone book name. The only thing I can think of is that he apparently copied all his SIM entries to the phone memory when he first got the phone. But it doesn't have trouble identifiying calls by their associated name...
